Contradictory Existence: Neoliberalism and Democracy in the Caribbean
No full textInfluenced by global capital and external forces, the small developing countries of the Caribbean share historical legacies of foreign domination and transplanted institutions. In Contradictory Existence, the relationship between capitalism, manifested in the contemporary dispensation as neoliberalism, and democracy is explored and the authors demonstrate how history, culture, geopolitics and the demands of international capital influence the tension between development and democracy. Cutting across the fields of sociology, anthropology, politics and international relations, the contributors to this volume challenge some of the assumptions of how democracy works in the context of capitalist development practised by most Caribbean countries since the 1990s; and how race, gender and class influence the exercise of democracy. I then analyzed my findings to determine that knowledge and skills are needed for pursuing a successful career in arts administration. My presentation will explain exactly what arts administration is, and how to make a career out of it

No full textIn 1975 a watershed moment captivated Mexico as indigenous peoples from across the country came together on the Island of Janitzio for the First National Congress of Indigenous Peoples. The congress was a federal government initiative intended to preempt an independent indigenous movement. But indigenous groups circumvented the intended containment policies of the congress and made bold demands for political self-determination. Using previously unavailable documents, María L. O. Muñoz examines the events that led to the congress, the meeting itself, and developments after the assembly. Muñoz shows how indigenous leaders working within Mexico’s Department of Colonization and Agrarian Affairs (DAAC) sidestepped state attempts to control indigenous communities, and how they made bold demands that redefined the ways federal and state governments engaged with pueblos indígenas.https://scholarlycommons.susqu.edu/facultybooks/1071/thumbnail.jp
The Salience of Utilitarian And Identity Criteria For Assessing The Quality Of EU Democracy
Get PDFThis paper aims to establish a baseline for how citizens evaluate the EU nearly a decade into the economic and transnational migration crisis. We will use a newly assembled Eurobarometer representation file (1993-2014) to examine whether mass publics have changed the basis upon which they evaluate the EU’s performance. The primary question at hand is whether the current crisis is viewed by citizens mainly through the lens of economic issues, as much prior research would lead us to expect (Anderson 1998; Eichenberg and Dalton 2003) or whether the flares in nationalist cross-border skirmishes between, say German and Greek politicians, reflect a deeper nationalism that resonates with European publics when they evaluate the EU. Analyses of several Eurobarometer surveys offer support for the expectation that the influence of utilitarian considerations and, to an even greater extent, nationalism has increased since the start of the sovereign debt crisis
The Effects of Covert Recruitment on Cognitive Processing in Action Video Game Players
Get PDFCognitive processing among video game players has been widely investigated. However, there has been serious debate regarding how methodological issues could be affecting these results. Our study is being conducted to assess the effects of covertly recruiting participants on performance in a Multiple Object Tracking (MOT) task. Covert recruitment conceals the role of video game experience in our study until after the cognitive task is completed. Additionally, we extend our research to include female participants, who have historically been omitted from cognitive video game research. The experiment began by administering the MOT task first, followed by a brief survey. The survey asked questions about how many hours each participant played, per week, of different genres of video games, as well as demographic information. Our results suggest that video game players (VGPs) of both genders perform better than non-video game players (NVGPs) when tracking a larger number of objects. This suggests that VGPs have an advantage in environmental awareness and visual short-term memory skills
