No full textThe Diversity of Life web has been in the making for the past 20 years. It began as a set of synoptic descriptions of phyla as they had been given in the standard text by Margulis and Schwartz (1982, 1988, and 1998), Five Kingdoms. Work in the areas of microbiology, protozoology, phycology, zoology, mycology, and botany began to coalesce into a collective understanding that the five kingdom system was not satisfactory. Thus, through a review of the pertinent literature, we began to reconfigure the hierarchical taxonomic scheme to use as an alternate text. The introduction is a brief description of the phylum with some emphasis on economically important taxa, unique structures, and aspects of life history. This section is supported with some citations and illustrations. The synoptic description of the phylum is an attempt to present the salient morphological, biochemical, physiological, ultrastructural, and life history characters in the same way for phyla in a particular group. The goal is to provide a mechanism by which broad groups of taxa can be compared directly. The systematics section is a brief text that covers the current understanding of the phylum, its taxonomic structure, and currently used alternatives. The systematic treatment is our interpretation of the literature for that group and is under constant revision. The hierarchical classification of the phylum is the higher taxa of all phyla to order (class for most animal groups). However, it is uneven in its treatment. The vertebrates are given to family as are the conifers and flowering plants
EU Simulations and Engagement: Motivating Greater Interest in European Union Politics
Get PDFWhile the effects of simulation based courses on the knowledge of participating students may be marginal in relation to standard lecture and discussion-based courses, this paper argues that the greatest leverage is gained by increasing participating students’ level of interest in the subject of study and in politics more broadly. Participants tend to become increasingly absorbed in their roles and in the politics of the institutions at the center of the simulation. To better consider this possibility, we conduct a survey of students participating in the 2015 Mid-Atlantic European Union Simulation and of appropriate control populations. The survey results indeed suggest that, much more than simply acquiring knowledge about the EU, the simulation experience serves to generate more robust interest in the subject of study

No full textThe Adams Law Center has provided me with the unique opportunity to intern with the 17th Judicial District Court of Common Pleas of Snyder and Union counties. This internship has provided me with a strong foundation in the understanding of courtroom procedure through my observation a variety of proceedings brought before several of the judges.
Moreover, I was given unique access to in-chamber discussions with attorneys and governmental meetings as the judge met with local, state and congressional officials. Overall, these experiences have provided me with a keen understanding the nature of human interaction within the context of the court. I have learned that though the operation of the court is highly dependent on procedure and precedent, individuals and personalities play an important role. Of particular value to me as I consider a career in law has been the ability to hear to the judges explain the significance of different things I observe. Listening to their observations based off years of professional experience has given me a practical understanding of the operation of the law unparalleled by any classroom learning.
I also gained experience by performing a variety of tasks for court administration. I aided in the preparation of orders, form packets, and trail binders. I also conducted research at the direction of the judges. I worked with the probation office looking up items ranging from statistics of retail theft victims to individual cases. I also conducted a statewide survey of Pennsylvania’s 67 county probation offices to determine the prevalence of Youth Aid Panel diversion programs. My findings were part of a presentation the judge gave concern ligation reducing volunteer programs.
Overall my experiences gained through my Adams Law Center internship have been invaluable not only to the development of my desired legal career but my overall professional growth. I have gained a deeper insight into how people work in a court setting and how the law operates. Moreover I have gained further practice in applying my research skills in a practical setting. Big-Five Personality, Risky Sexual Behavior, and Pornography Consumption: Engagement in Risky Sexual Behavior Poses Health Risks for Individuals and Society
Get PDFThis study investigated the relationship between the Big-Five Factor personality traits, risky sexual behavior, and pornography consumption. An online survey was completed by undergraduate students recruited from psychology courses (N = 337). Results show a modest positive correlation between extraversion and risky sexual behaviors, but no correlation between extraversion and pornography consumption. Researchers also found that participants with high scores on the openness scale. Understanding these relationships may support the production and implementation of educational and preventative programming to decrease engagement in risky sexual behavior and limit negative outcomes for those at greater risk
The Salience of Utilitarian and Identity Criteria for Assessing the Quality of EU Democracy
Get PDFThis paper aims to establish a baseline for how citizens evaluate the EU nearly a decade into the economic and transnational migration crisis. We will use a newly assembled Eurobarometer representation file (1993-2014) to examine whether mass publics have changed the basis upon which they evaluate the EU’s performance. The primary question at hand is whether the current crisis is viewed by citizens mainly through the lens of economic issues, as much prior research would lead us to expect (Anderson 1998; Eichenberg and Dalton 2003) or whether the flares in nationalist cross-border skirmishes between, say German and Greek politicians, reflect a deeper nationalism that resonates with European publics when they evaluate the EU. Analyses of several Eurobarometer surveys offer support for the expectation that the influence of utilitarian considerations and, to an even greater extent, nationalism has increased since the start of the sovereign debt crisis
