Enabling a Local Brand in Finding Presence Overseas
Over the course of 3 months, students from Dr. Fleck\u27s International Business course partnered with local snowboard manufacturer, Gilson Boards, in researching the feasibility of Gilson expanding into Japanese markets. Time was spent conducting an array of analyses and meeting with company owners, Nick and Austin, to grasp the essence of the ‘Gilson Brand’ and what their visions and goals were. By the end of the semester, our team was able to provide the owners with a final deliverable harnessing analyses of the Japanese external environment, culture, competitors, and target market as well as a market entry strategy and marketing techniques for our client. After an in-depth exploration of the Japanese nation, our team offered recommendations into making Gilson an international brand

The Anglo-Norman Invasion was an event that shaped the history of Ireland for centuries thereafter, but there are very limited sources from the era with which to study the event. This project will demonstrate a comparative analysis between two medieval primary sources about the event, and explain how historians have used those sources to study the Anglo-Norman Invasion of Ireland, in addition to examining how the two primary sources influenced the subject as a whole

Soldiers and Students: Mobilization of Campus during World War II at Susquehanna University looks at the changes that happened to the Susquehanna campus during World War II in comparison with other schools in the same time frame. It was conducted as a local study of the Susquehanna campus through the use of the on campus archives. The theories used to explain the changes are educational theory and nationalistic theory. The way that I explored those theories was looking at the curriculum change and the accommodations that the professors made for the cadets that came to campus as a part of the army air corps training program
Predictors of College Students’ Participation in Hookup Culture
“Hooking up,” defined as engaging in non-committal, physically intimate relationships, is a common behavior on college campuses. We surveyed students to determine the effects of alcohol usage, personality traits, and attachment styles on college students’ participation in hookup behaviors, as well as their perceptions of hooking up. Based on previous research, we expected to find that perceptions of and participation in hookup behaviors would show significant, positive relationships with extraversion, narcissism, anxious and avoidant attachment styles, and alcohol consumption, and a negative correlation with secure attachment style. Our results generally were consistent with our hypotheses. However, our sample was skewed toward first year students, so additional research will be needed to expand the diversity of the pool of participants to give us a more accurate view of the phenomenon
How Teacher Perceptions of Students Affect Interactions
In this self-study, the research question asked, How do personal perceptions of students affect interactions? To answer this question, I kept a record of the interactions I had with each of nineteen first grade students over a 10 week period during my student teaching experience. I then analyzed that data to find a pattern in those interactions I had with them. The results fell within two general categories, positive and negative, which were based largely on my emotions on any particular day
Activation of Mesolimbocortical Dopamine Pathways
Activation of the mesolimbocortical dopamine pathway is implicated in reward and addiction behaviors. Specifically, alcohol increases dopamine in the mesolimbocortical dopamine pathway. In regards to sex differences, alcohol has a greater effect on the female brain compared to the male brain. While this pathway is often studied under chronic ethanol (EtOH) treatment conditions, we hypothesized that changes in dopamine production or transmission are altered following acute EtOH intoxication, and that there are sex differences in these effects. To test this hypothesis, male and female wild-type Swiss Webster mice were treated with 2g/kg ethanol (20% EtOH in saline) or saline via i.p. injection and were euthanized 2 hours post-injection. Brain tissue was fixed in 4% paraformaldehyde and sectioned into 35 micron thick sections that were processed for immunohistochemical staining for the dopamine-synthesizing enzyme, tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) and nucleus accumbens (NAc). We expected ethanol treated female mice to exhibit an increase of TH immunoreactivity in the VTA and NAc. Ongoing quantitative analysis suggests that female saline-treated mice have increased TH immunoreactivity in the VTA and NAc compared to EtOH-treated. This experiment has further implications on the reward pathway and how this pathway is affected by alcohol addiction
The Effect of Matrix Metalloproteinase Inhibition on Intracellular Signaling in Adipogenic Differentiation of 3T3-L1 Cells
The growing obesity epidemic has led to an increased interest in the study of adipogenesis, which can be modeled in mouse 3T3-L1 fibroblast cells. Extracellular matrix remodeling is a critical process during adipogenesis that is facilitated by matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). To better understand the function of MMPs, the MMP inhibitor Ilomostat was used on 3T3-L1 preadipocytes along with rosiglitazone, a drug that upregulates the transcription factor peroxisome-proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ). We predicted that if MMP inhibition prevents activation of the transcription factor CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein β (C/EBPβ), the effect of Ilomostat should overcome the upregulation of downstream PPARγ by rosiglitazone. Results suggest that MMP inhibition prevents adipogenic conversion despite the addition of the PPARγ agonist, and that PPARγ expression was slightly decreased in cells treated with both rosiglitazone and Ilomostat. These results will help clarify the downstream effects of MMPs during adipogenesis and provide more insight into specific targets for obesity treatment
