Using Long-Short Term Memory Network to Train Machine Composing Baroque Fugue/Canon
The goal of this project is to train a machine to compose Baroque Fugue/Canon by using Long-Short Term Memory architecture (LSTM). LSTM is a type of artificial recursive neural network (RNN), which excels at learning patterns at both long and short time periods. By limiting to particular “styles” of structures and patterns, the problem becomes more tractable. In our study, we focus on the Baroque Fugue/Canons as they are polyphonic music with standard rules and structures to regulate the composing process. A 2-layer bi-directional LSTM network has been designed. With training data of midi files of Fugue/Canon primarily composed by J.S Bach, have been collected from internet and translated into a text file. Length, frequency, intensity and timing will be considered as training features. The checkpoint file with best validation loss will be used to generate output file, and converted back into midi file. The result will be announced at the conference
Synthesizing Pictures From Text Using a DC-GAN
Generative Adversarial Text-to-Image Synthesis (Reed et al., 2016) is a model that can synthesize images based on given text – we have worked to try to apply to different data and to try to improve results seen in the original paper. The model performs two main tasks – it collects relevant information about the images to form a text feature representation of each of the images and it uses these learned text features to then synthesize images from given (new) text. To accomplish this, the model uses a DC-GAN (deep convolutional generative adversarial network) which has been conditioned on the text features coming from the visually-discriminative vector representations of the images that are assembled from the training data set. The features are then encoded by a hybrid character-level CRNN (convolutional recurrent neural network) to achieve feed-forward inference. There are several algorithms that can be used to produce synthesized images: GAN, GAN-CLS, GAN-INT, and GAN-INT-CLS. Each of those algorithms have varying results; their performance depends on the type of dataset used to train them, and the type of results you want to see from your input text

Octopamine effects on wolf spider courtship and mating interactions: more sex or more cannibalism?
Octopamine (OA) has been used in development insecticide for crop pests, but the impact of these compounds has been poorly studied among non-target species like spiders. Wolf spiders are an important biocontrol agent in agricultural systems. Studies have shown that male wolf spiders with elevated endogenous levels of OA use more coercive mating tactics compared to low-OA males. We compared the effect of octopamine on the courtship behavior between males and females of the wolf spider Pardosa milvina. We dehydrated male and female spiders prior to dosing with a 2 mg/1 ml concentration of OA : water solution among random pairs of unmated spiders in four different treatment groups. A fifth treatment group was not withheld water to control for dehydration. We measured male courtship, female receptivity, aggression and sexual cannibalism across groups. Results suggest that OA significantly decreases male courtship but does not significantly affect females
Does a College Student’s Diet affect their GPA?
The goal of my research paper is to examine if there is any correlation between a college student’s diet at Susquehanna University and their GPA. I surveyed students at SU to collect data on eating habits and academic habits as well as grades. Then I ran statistical analyses through SAS to find out if there were any statistical significance between my dependent and independent variables. I used an OLS regression and censored regression model in case the dependent variable was not normally distributed. Out of all the dietary variables that I analyzed, I only found that the average number of servings of vegetables consumed per day was statistically significant in increasing a student’s GPA
Unmasking the History of Performance
A collection of researched Western theatre performance styles, developed into a 30-minute performance, that provides the audience with a picture of how theatre has evolved across the centuries: Greek tragedy as exemplified by Euripides\u27 Trojan Women, English Renaissance as exemplified by William Shakespeare\u27s As You Like It, late Victorian comedy of manners as exemplified by Oscar Wilde\u27s The Importance of Being Earnest, and concluding with two Anton Chekhov monologues that exemplify a turning point in Western performance style toward psychological Realism. The actors bring audience members on an educational journey through theatre, utilizing background research in the historical cultures and events as well as historical staging and acting techniques. This performance is intended to showcase the Susquehanna theatre department\u27s work and reveal a piece of what a theatre student studies in order to create art beyond typical commercial theatre
The Ins and Outs of ETFs
Introduced roughly 25 years ago, exchange-traded funds (ETFs) have become one of the fastest-growing segments of the investment world. These funds offer access to nearly every asset class and allow both large and small investors to construct institutional-caliber portfolios. The purpose of our presentation is to deliver an in-depth explanation of the complex structure of ETFs. We will be discussing how ETFs are created and traded. ETFs work differently than mutual funds and those differences generate exclusive benefits. However, there are additional risks associated with those benefits. In our presentation, we will give a detailed analysis into some of this unique benefits and risks that are associated with ETFs. During this analysis, some of the concepts that will be covered are the creation/redemption process, fund seeding, and the roles of authorized participants, index providers and managers, brokers, and exchanges. After this presentation, the audience should have a complete understanding of how ETFs work
A Minority’s Lived Experiences beyond the City Lights of Reading, PA
My name is Raquel J. Capellan and I am currently a senior at Susquehanna University studying Communications with an emphasis in Broadcasting and a minor in sociology. I plan on pursuing a career in the non-profit and education sectors utilizing both my passion for videography as well as public speaking in this field. Portraying social issues through a camera lens has proved to be effective in educating people from different communities. Being a Broadcasting major has trained me to use digital video as a powerful tool to begin dialogues about current societal issues and challenges that are relevant to high school and college students. A fellow high school and current college colleague at Susquehanna University and myself interviewed a 12 current students and six alumni from our alma mater, Reading Senior High School. The interviews focused on the pros and cons of going to college after graduating from high school. An overarching theme we encountered among the majority of our respondents was the impact of low socioeconomic background and incentives to continue education after high school in the Reading School District. Furthermore, the six alumni we interviewed mentioned particular things they would change about the United States educational system if given the opportunity as well as what they felt did and did not sufficiently prepare them for life after graduating or how to survive in college. My research is focused on the alumni that we interviewed, due to the fact that they shared deeper lived experiences after beginning college and studying abroad across the world. These experiences have shaped them into students who have excelled and pushed beyond the obstacles that limit them from potentially having a successful career or being accepted into college. The name of the project is called A Minority’s Lived experiences beyond the City Lights of Reading, PA. It is focused on highlighting the lived experiences and stories of alumni from Reading Senior High School and how they found ways to excel beyond their hometown

Press Any Key To Start is a choose your own adventure experience set entirely in the viewer\u27s point of view. With each video comes a new choice dictating where your adventure will lead. This independent project was filmed over the course of three weeks, using various film and audio equipment, and then edited in one week with Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects. We utilized YouTube as a vehicle for this project because of its annotation system, which allowed us to incorporate a level of interactivity within this entertainment platform. Segmentation of Heart Ventricles Using Skeletal Representations
The objective of the project is to develop practical algorithms to segment the human heart’s left and right ventricles from isotropic Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). An advanced algorithm that allows for efficient analysis of the ventricles in 3D or 4D would help diagnose and treat numerous cardiac diseases and illnesses. The left ventricle is a convex-like structure whereas the right ventricle has a relatively more abstract shape. The constant blood flow in and out of the ventricles causes them to look different at any given time. Therefore, our data set is in 4D where the fourth dimension is time. Our algorithms take a 3D MRI volume and first reduces it to a 1D skeletal representation with figure-ground separation followed by morphological analysis. We think the skeletal representation is rich enough to keep the important structural information of ventricles while small enough to scale it to the 4D volume efficiently in the future. The first algorithm further reduces the skeleton into a minimum spanning tree and asks a user for an edge that can separate the ventricle from the rest of the structure. The second algorithm first asks the user for two points inside the ventricle: one near the atrium and the other near its tip. These two points define the skeleton of the ventricle and allows the algorithm to differentiate it from the other structures. We designed a user friendly graphical interface for our testing and demonstration. We tested the first algorithm on 4 data sets provided by the Fornwalt Lab at Geisinger Hospital. Each data contains manual annotations of both left and right ventricles at end-systolic and end-diastolic phases. The algorithm was run on a laptop with 1.80 GHz CPU with 8 GB RAM. The average Intersection over Union (IoU) and time was 60% and 1.484 seconds respectively for the left ventricle and 32% and 1.5281 seconds respectively for the right ventricle. We will report the results of the second algorithm at the conference. The target is 80% IoU for both ventricles
