    SUPeR Feature Article: Juvenile Injustice in the Justice System

    It is no secret that there are problems in the juvenile justice system of the United States. As a citizen of the largest incarcerator in the world, including of children, I was inclined to find out why it is so many children are being jailed year after year. While I first aimed to gauge public knowledge on the juvenile justice system as a whole, I then decided to see whether the public would be less punitive with more knowledge of the young offender. Additionally, I aimed to gather information on racial disparities within the system and, therefore, within the public. Through three surveys sent to over 2,000 Susquehanna students, I found there was evidence to suggest that there is support for my first hypothesis, but not enough evidence to support my second. A majority of responders in all three surveys think that there should be reform in the juvenile justice system

    Measuring Environmental Performance for Oil and Gas Development

    This study documents environmental performance for firms that extract oil and gas using hydraulic fracturing (fracking) technologies. Environmental performance is measured using public regulatory data for unconventional oil and gas development in the State of Pennsylvania. Using the performance measure, I show considerable variation in environmental performance for companies in the study. Of particular interest is that ‘independent’ oil and gas companies – smaller companies that specialize in exploration and production – performed better on average than the ‘majors’ – the large, international oil companies. The data and methods presented in the study should prove useful to researchers and stakeholders who find the lack of transparency in regulatory systems and environmental reporting a stumbling block to furthering research on environmental performance for firms that employ hydraulic fracturing

    Women of Abstract Expressionism: Lee Krasner, Joan Mitchell, and Elaine de Kooning

    Lee Krasner’s artistic career embodies the struggle of the female artist during the Abstract Expressionism movement. Although she observed and found inspiration in artists such as Mondrian and Matisse, critics oftentimes attributed her style and content solely to her marriage to Jackson Pollock, another Abstract Expressionist artist. They made comments that Krasner’s work was simply “tidying up” that of her husband’s, and that her work was not completely considered Abstract Expressionism, even though it included several of the main components of the movement. Even though she was one of the few women featured in exhibitions during this time, the exhibitions focused on the assumed femininity in her works and her relationship with male artists. Krasner’s career highlights the unequal and unfair treatment of female artists, particularly during the 1950s and 60s

    The role of Yes-associated protein (YAP) in Lytechinus pictus embryogenesis

    Regulation of cell division plays a critical role in animal development. The Hippo pathway helps regulate cell division through the process of phosphorylation of the Yes-associated protein (YAP). Although the major components of the pathway are present in sea urchins, little is known about the pathway\u27s function in this species. Verteporfin, a known inhibitor of YAP, was used to determine the role of YAP in regulating cell proliferation and tissue development in Lytechinus pictus. Loss-of-function experiments were conducted using various concentrations of Verteporfin over a course of 48-hours after fertilization. This correlates to the level of YAP mRNA present during this stage of development. There were also specific effects on the number and distribution of skeletogenic mesenchyme cells. These results suggest that YAP plays a similar role in sea urchins, functioning to control cell division and tissue development, indicating evolutionary conservation of this pathway in animals

    Understanding how the introduction of invasive species affects not only native populations, but also the local ecosystem, is essential for determining the total impact of these species. In addition, examining how physical barriers and environmental barriers affect invasive species may be beneficial when deciding how to allocate resources to protect native populations. Our study conducted in the fall of 2016 seeks to determine the effects of two Central Pennsylvania reservoirs (Walker and Faylor Lakes) on the invasion of Rusty Crayfish (Orconectes rusticus) and the effects of drought on the crayfish populations of Middle Creek (Snyder County, Pennsylvania). We used a one-square meter frame net to sample ten stream sites above and below Walker and Faylor Lakes over several weeks. Three sites on each reservoir were sampled with modified minnow traps. All individuals were measured to the nearest mm in order to determine size class. Representatives of each size class were dissected in order to determine diets. Initial results indicate only individuals of the native Appalachian Brook Crayfish (Cambarus bartonii bartonii) were found in one site above Walker Lake, indicating this reservoir could be a barrier to invasion. Based on previous results of rusty crayfish diets, we expect to see younger age classes of crayfish eating primarily benthic macroinvertebrates while older age classes will likely consume primarily a plant and organic matter based diet. Understanding the impacts of aquatic invasive species such as Rusty Crayfish can help us better understand how these species disrupt ecosystems and alter food webs

    Inhibition of Adipogenesis in 3T3-L1 cells by the Anti-inflammatory Agents 6-gingerol and Retinoic Acid

    Obesity has been characterized as a chronic, metabolic inflammatory state. Since the inflammatory response is activated in obesity, the ability of anti-inflammatory compounds to repress the inflammatory response through the Wnt/beta-catenin pathway has been studied. Anti-inflammatory compounds inhibit adipogenesis by upregulating beta-catenin, resulting in the inhibition of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor PPARγ. We investigated the effects of two anti-inflammatory compounds, 6-gingerol and retinoic acid, on adipogenesis in 3T3-L1 cells. Following treatment with 6-gingerol and retinoic acid in differentiation medium for 8 days, cells were stained with Oil-Red-O to detect lipid droplets. Results demonstrate inhibition of adipogenesis by both 6-gingerol and retinoic acid. Future studies will utilize Western blot analysis to determine levels of PPARγ. It is hypothesized that these compounds inhibit adipogenesis through varying degrees of beta-catenin upregulation, leading to the inhibition of PPARγ. Through this research, we hope to contribute to the understanding of the anti-adipogenic mechanisms of anti-inflammatory compounds

    My research looks at the power dynamic between the state government and its citizens, as influenced by developing technology from the 1890s to 1930s. This research considers the following question: who ultimately holds power within the state? Early twentieth-century court cases from three state-level courts, including the Snyder County Court, the Pennsylvania Superior Court, and the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, demonstrate how Pennsylvania citizens used the court system to empower themselves in reaction to technological harm. This project reveals that ultimately the state government holds power. When technology fails, the citizens turn to the state controlled court system for reassurance and guidance
