How do my Emotions Affect Tone of Voice During my Teaching Practices?
The purpose of this study is to understand the effect of an educator\u27s emotions on their tone of voice during teaching practices. This study was done at CS Elementary school, a Title 1 school located in Sunny Side, PA. At CS, 85% of the kids are from low-income homes; there is a 15:1 student per teacher ratio and 15% of students have a disability. I researched how a teacher\u27s emotions can affect the way their voice is presented in the classroom because stress is a major factor in the life of an educator. Student surveys and journals were used to capture the day in the life of a teacher. There have been some set-backs to my study due to the global pandemic COVID-19 of 2020. Findings showed that emotions do in fact have an effect on the tone, but not as much as expected. It was obvious in the findings that mostly positive and encouraging tones were used despite internal emotions
Underground Mine Fire: Increased Temperatures Altering Abundance of Sulfur Cycle Related Genes
Centralia, Pennsylvania is a town that was affected by an underground coal mine fire in the 60s. It has been burning ever since and is expected to continue burning for another 100 years. As this coal fire burns, it heats, and deposits oxidized sulfur products into the overlying soils and releases sulfur dioxide into the air. This, in turn, causes environmental dangers such as amplified acid rain and acid mine runoff into neighboring water sources. Soil samples have been collected from affected and unaffected sites in Centralia since the fall of 2014. Metagenomic analyses are being performed on DNA extracted from these samples in order to correlate the relative abundance of genes involved in sulfur-cycling to soil sulfur concentrations. Real-time PCR conditions are also being developed to allow us to assay the expression of these genes. Ultimately, this work will help us determine how sulfur-cycling bacteria are influencing the environmental impacts of the coalmine fire and may lead to new strategies for bioremediation
How Does the Usage of Verbal vs Nonverbal Cues Affect Classroom Management in my Teaching Practice?
This study was performed with the intent to determine which way better helps elementary age students understand rules and directions better, verbal or nonverbal cues. My data was taken from a second-grade classroom over the course of four weeks while student teaching. My goal was to determine through observations and interactions with my students how I could most effectively communicate with them during a busy school day, to ensure that the most learning possible was completed
Echo Revisited: Incapacitation, Exploitation, Reverberation
The world of the past and those civilisations that preceded ours is no longer. Our poems and stories cannot comfortably stage anymore “fresche, chiare et dolci acque” like those in Francesco Petrarca’s famous poem, where they appear as a harmonious background for characters of the natural kingdom. Today, they capitulate instead to the presence of contaminated waters bearing the signs of impending death or incipient destruction. Such are our expanses. In our world, Echo, the still disdained nymph in love with prideful and haughty-hearted Narcissus, can no longer naturally inhabit a landscape of unspoiled beauty. Instead, she finds herself residing in woods and along rivers soiled with filth, darkly tinted, and increasingly subject to human dominion. To phrase things differently, in our time and day, Echo, incapacitated herself, would dwell in a waste land of incapacitation, exploitation and death
Beta-endorphin expression and sex affect the ability of alcohol to alter tyrosine hydroxylase immunoreactivity in the reward pathway in mice
Alcohol has sexually dimorphic effects on the brain, and the endogenous opioid, beta-endorphin (BE), mediates many effects of alcohol. In the mesolimbic dopamine reward pathway, alcohol stimulates neurons to enhance dopaminergic signaling, but the exact mechanism underlying this phenomenon is unknown. Alcohol could impact dopaminergic signaling in the reward pathway by affecting the production and localization of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), the rate-limiting enzyme for dopamine synthesis. Therefore, we hypothesized that acute alcohol intoxication would increase c-fos expression and tyrosine hydroxylase immunoreactivity (TH-ir) in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) and nucleus accumbens (NAc) in a sex- and BE-dependent manner. In this study, male and female wild type (WT) and BE knock out (KO) mice were injected intraperitoneally with 2g/kg ethanol (EtOH) or saline. Post-injection animals were sacrificed by overdose with sodium pentobarbital and perfused with saline followed by 4% paraformaldehyde. Brain sections (35μm) were processed for immunohistochemical staining for TH (Anti-TH, 1:10,000, EMD Millipore) and cfos (1:5000, SYnaptic SYstems). The number of single and double labeled cells in the VTA were counted and the integrated optical density of the TH-ir staining in the NAc was quantified using Image Pro Plus software. In the VTA, KO females given EtOH treatment exhibited greater c-fos and TH expression. EtOH treatment significantly decreased TH-ir in the NAc in WT mice and increased it in KO mice. The results of this study indicate that females are particularly sensitive to the effects of EtOH and emphasizes the importance of studying the impact of sex on alcohol addiction
Personality Traits, Attachment Styles, and Romantic Relationships
Interactions between romantic relationship status, personality traits, and attachment style were investigated in this study. Research was conducted via an online survey administered by Qualtrics and data were collected through self-report methods. Results showed those who never have been in a relationship showed heightened association with anxious attachment styles, avoidant attachment styles, and low levels of extraversion. Those who have been in a relationship or were in one at the time of the survey reported heightened levels of extraversion, as well as more secure attachment styles. These results imply that individuals who present extraverted personality traits and secure attachment styles may have more success in pursuing romantic relationships
How has my experience as a student athlete impacted my teaching practices?
Abstract The purpose of this study was to examine the positive and negative impacts that characteristics developed from being a student athlete can have on teaching practices in a classroom. Daily self-reflections and graphic organizers were used to observe situations that occurred in a third-grade general education classroom as a result of athlete acquired characteristics utilized. Findings showed that most characteristics developed from student athletes have a positive effect on teaching methods used in a classroom. Furthermore, this study goes to show that student athletes are taught valuable skills that can be used to effectively in a teaching profession
Investigating the Effect of Brain Breaks in the Classroom on Teaching Practice
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects that short and active “brain breaks” have on students and teaching practice in the classroom. The living educational theory method was used in order to tally off-task behaviors before and after brain breaks were implemented. Findings show that student off-task behavior decreased due to the use of brain breaks in the classroom, and in effect the teacher in the study spent less time re-directing students, and students were more attentive and able to follow directions. This resulted in effective lesson execution and successful activities
Brain Breaks Throughout the School Day
The purpose of this self study was to understand how brain breaks throughout the day affected myself and my class. The type of brain break that was most effective was also examined. In order to collect data lessons were recorded and watched, surveys were taken, and time refocusing was recorded. Findings showed that brain breaks were effective and the breaks that were low intensity and focused on calming were the most effective
