He could think of no grander expression of his 
gratitude than to unfurl the Stars and Stripes 
from the top of Independence monument. The 
highest monolith In the canyon, thla solid rock 
spire towered 500 feet above the valley floor, 
and Its entire height contained scarcely a large-
enough ledge to make a ~ootstool for a buzzard. 
'nlat the hazardous perpendlcular had never 
been scaled ( even professional alplnlats consid-
ered It unacalable I didn't faze Otto. He had mllde 
up bis mind to cllmb It with the flag. 
'Colon OYer the Wildemeaa 
world's largest flat-topped mountain, which looms 
to the east. 
Fossils and petrified wood are found within 
the Monument area. The rocky slopes between 
Its boundaries and the Colorado river have yielded 
five different species of dinosaurs, Including the 
dlplodocus, largest land-Jiving animal lmown, and 
the brontosaurus. 
Considering John Otto's Jong and unpaid serv• 
Ice during• which he built roads and trails and 
opened the forbidding places to visitors, it would 
have seemed right had the hermit been appointed 
as the Monument's first official custodian, but 
this was not done. Still, for several years after 
creation of the park, John Otto continued to serve 
Its beat Interests-without remuneration. And 
then-no one appears to remember exactly when 
-he simply dropped out of sight. 
How Big Are the Roekiea? 
Working with single jack ancl ~I he would 
laboriously drlJJ a hole In the solid rock and drive 
a strong Iron bar Into It Climbing a single step 
higher, he would chisel out another hole and 
imert another _bar. Day after day, week after 
week, this ·operation went on, until the hermit 
at last pulled himself up on the pinnacle of Inde-
pendence Monument. Exhilarating, frightening 
moment! No man before him had been there to 
have thla eagle's view . 
So, with nl!lther anfare"ll~ to aal11:t.: 
his accompllshment. John Otto ralaed bis flagpole 
and triumphantly ran up the colors to fly. over 
the wildemeu. 1 Att1!r a time he cllmbed back 
down from that dizzy height. 
Just a tew weeks ago he wrote a letter to 
Bmf)ire magazine from Klamath River, Calif., 
~~!! the edlto~ had m"'!!lged, after consider- _ 
able research, to 1ocate him. ' · 
The flag became 80MeWhat faded and tattered · 
after a year or 80, and Otto decided that a new 
one wu .In order and another trip up the rock 
wu IChedulelL On this occasion. however, he had 
plenty of wltneaaea, who gathered from miles 
around to celebrate In his honor and to watch him 
make the cllmb.

enough; but when -the man had planted the new 
flag· and started back down the sheer rock, Jow-
erln1 ~If from one fragile-looking bar to the 
next, It la said that women fainted and scores of \ 
men-unable to watch his downward course--
found themselves compelled to close their eyes 
or turn away.

day an excellent hl&hwaY skirts the -canyon rim

As an afterthought, just before malling his 
reply, he printed a rather homesick note on the 
back of the envelope. ''How big are the Rocky 
Mountains? They are as big as my heart. Nobody 
loves them more."
