The title of this paper is Article The and Its Translation in Indonesian. The problems which are analyzed in this paper are about the uses of this definite article and the kinds of the translation of this definite article. These problems are discussed by doing a library research, that is by reading the data source of the SL (English) and the data source of the TL (Indonesia). The data source of the SL (Source Language) from which the data of the uses of this definite article are taken is a novel entitled Red Queen (2015) written by Victoria Aveyard. Then, the data source from the TL (Target Language) from which the data of the kinds of the translation of this article are taken is a novel entitled Ratu Merah (2016) which is written by Nuraini Mastura. This Indonesian novel constitutes a translation from this English novel. Besides reading these two data sources, the references which show the concepts that can be used to analyze these problems are also read accurately. The theory which is used to analyze the problem about the uses of this article is the theory on the article, especially the article the. The concepts of the uses of this article are mainly taken from a book entitled A Comprehensive Grammar of The English Language (1985) by Quirk, Greenbaum, et al. in this book, it is described by Quirk, Greenbaum, et al. That the most common and typical central determiners are the definite and indefinite articles, the and a/an, respectively. The forms of the articles depend on the initial sound of the following word. In its unstressed (normal use), the definite article is always written the but pronounced /ð/ before consonants and before vowels. Besides from this main reference, the concepts of this definite article are also taken from some supporting references. Further, in analyzing the translation of this article, the theory which is applied is the theory on the translation. The concepts of the translation is mainly taken from a book which is entitled Meaning-Based Translation (1984) written by Milder L, Larson. In this book, Larson says that ‘Translation consist of transferring the meaning of the source language into the receptor language’. vii This is done by going from the form of the first language to the form of a second language by way of semantic structure. It is meaning which is being transferred and must be held constant. Only the form changes. The form from which the translation is made will be called the source language and the form into which it is to be changed will be called the Receptor Language. Translation, then, consists of studying the lexicon, grammatical structure, communication situation, and cultural context of the source language text, analyzing it in order to determine its meaning, and then reconstructing this same meaning using the lexicon and grammatical structure which are appropriate in the Receptor Language and its cultural context.’ Beside from this main reference, the concepts of the translation are also taken from some supporting references. Based upon the result of the analysis, it can be described that the article the is used in a great quantities in the SL, especially in Victoria Aveyard’s Red Queen (2015). In this SL, this article is used in several uses. It is used with: (1) generic reference, (2) particular reference, (3) reference to immediate situation, (4) reference to larger situation, (5) anaphoric reference, (6) cataphoric reference, (7) sporadic reference, (8) reference to parts of the human body, (9) reference to surnames, (10) nouns of definite quality, and (11) non count abstract nouns postmodified by an of-phrase. The last use of this article found in this SL is it use before superlative adjectives. In the TL, especially in Nuraini Mastura’s Ratu Merah (2016), some of the article the are idiomatically translated into several translations, and some of the others are idiomatically translated into one translation only. In the TL, the article the used with: (1) generic reference is translated into zero translation, the word itu, and the suffix –nya; (2) particular reference is translated into zero translation, the suffix –mu and –nya, the word itu, and the word sang; (3) reference to immediate situation is translated into zero translation and the word itu; (4) reference to larger situation is translated into zero translation viii and the word ini; (5) anaphoric reference is translated into zero translation and the word ini and itu; (6) cataphoric reference is translated into zero translation and the suffix –nya; (7) sporadic reference is translated into zero translation and the word itu and ini, and the suffix –nya; (8) reference to parts of the human body is translated into zero translation and the suffix –nya; (9) reference to surnames is only translated into zero translation; (10) nouns of definite quality is also translated into zero translation only; (11) non count abstract nouns postmodified by an of-phrase is translated into zero translation and the word itu. Furthermore, the article the, which is used before superlative adjectives, is translated into zero translation in this TL

This study aims to determine the effect of biochar and compost and their interaction on the growth and yield of pakchoy plants. This research uses randomized block design with a factorial pattern. Treatment consists of two factors, namely: the dosage of biochar and compost. The first factor was the dosage of biochar consisting of 4 levels, namely: without biochar, 5 t ha-1, 10 t ha-1, 15 t ha-1. The second factor is the dosage of compost, which consists of 4 levels: without compost, 10 t ha-1, 20 t ha-1, and 30 t ha-1. The results showed that the interaction between the dosage of biochar and compost had no significant effect on all observed variables. The compost application had a very significant effect on all observed variables, while the biochar application had no significant effect on all observed variables. Biochar applications at various dosage were not significantly different, but the dosage of biochar 10 t ha-1 tended to give the highest yield of fresh weight of 18.68 g which increased by 19.32% when compared with the lowest yield on treatment without the dosage biochar that is 15.66 g. The application of 20 t ha-1 compost gave the highest yield of fresh weight of 19.75 g which increased by 44% compared to the lowest value in the composted treatment which was 13.71 g
