Emerging investigator series: Synthesis of magnesium oxide nanoparticles fabricated on a graphene oxide nanocomposite for CO\u3csub\u3e2\u3c/sub\u3e sequestration at elevated temperatures

Alkaline metal oxides incorporated into porous templates are considered novel chemisorbents for capturing greenhouse gases including CO2 at elevated temperatures. Thus, magnesium oxide nanoparticles (MONPs) and MONP incorporated graphene oxide (MONP-GO) were synthesized using a sol-gel method. Preparation of these materials was carried out by a three-step facile synthesis route involving: (1) synthesis of magnesium oxide (MO) nanoparticles (MONPs), (2) synthesis of graphene oxide (GO) from commercially available graphene, and (3) incorporation of MONPs on graphene oxide. Both MONP and MONP-GO samples exhibited a significantly high CO2 uptake of 2.79-3.34 mmol g-1 at two different elevated temperatures (60 and 120 °C). The increased CO2 adsorption is due to the presence of terminal OH groups and acid-base pair sites at the magnesium (Mg2+-O2-) surface in the MONP and MONP-GO materials, respectively, resulting in the formation of hydrogen carbonate species and bidentate carbonate complexes with CO2 gas. Our composite material also possesses intriguing properties including high thermal and chemical stabilities, low-cost, and environmental benignity along with its enhanced CO2 sorption making it an excellent candidate for CO2 capture in fossil fuel-based power plants at elevated temperatures
Uncanny but not confusing: Multisite study of perceptual category confusion in the Uncanny Valley
© 2019 The Authors Android robots that resemble humans closely, but not perfectly, can provoke negative feelings of dislike and eeriness in humans (the “Uncanny Valley” effect). We investigated whether category confusion between the perceptual categories of “robot” and “human” contributes to Uncanny Valley aversion. Using a novel, validated corpus of 182 images of real robot and human faces, we precisely estimated the shape of the Uncanny Valley and the location of the perceived robot/human boundary. To implicitly measure confusion, we tracked 358 participants’ mouse trajectories as they categorized the faces. We observed a clear Uncanny Valley, though with some interesting differences from standard theoretical predictions; the initial apex of likability for highly mechanical robots indicated that these robots were still moderately dislikable, and the Uncanny Valley itself was positioned closer to the mechanical than to the human-like end of the spectrum. We also observed a pattern of categorization suggesting that humans do perceive a categorical robot/human boundary. Yet in contrast to predictions of the category confusion mechanism hypothesis, the locations of the Uncanny Valley and of the category boundary did not coincide, and mediation analyses further failed to support a mechanistic role of category confusion. These results suggest category confusion does not explain the Uncanny Valley effect
News Routines in the TV Sports Department: Shifting Expectations and Technology in an Increasingly Digital Landscape
© The Author(s) 2020. The sports departments in local television news stations across the United States are transforming with the shifting contemporary trends implemented industry wide. Some departments are contracting, others are moving their content to web-only, while others are simply trying to sustain themselves in modern ways. The purpose of this study was to examine how current local sports television journalists addressed the changing marketplace and what impact the procedural and technological changes had on the stories they delivered. Researchers conducted 30 semistructured interviews with current sports media practitioners who worked in newsrooms throughout the United States. The findings of this study rendered four themes, which cumulatively suggest local sports media practitioners are facing varied engagements with job satisfaction and productivity based on their adaptability with shifting expectations. The themes were underscored by the influence of a move to digital first as an industry standard, while specifically examining how social media influences behavior and engagement. The study concludes that, while there are pervasive traditional constraints on journalists, there are also more recent challenges that created complexities in the exchange of information
The L-move and markov theorems for trivalent braids

We follow the L-move approach to the Markov theorem to prove a one-move Markov-type theorem for trivalent braids. We also reformulate this L-move Markov theorem and prove a more algebraic Markov-type theorem for trivalent braids. Along the way, we provide a proof of the Alexander theorem analogue for spatial trivalent graphs and trivalent braids
New taxa of the water mite family Limnocharidae (Actinotrichida: Eylaoidea) parasitising tropical water bugs of the genus Rhagovelia Mayr, 1865 (Hemiptera: Veliidae) reveal unsuspected diversity of larval morphologies

The larval stage of Neolimnochares johnstoni Smith and Cook, 2005 is first described in detail, and the larva of a similar undescribed species, Neolimnochares sp. B, see Table 1, is recorded from Peru. Larvae attributed to Limnochares (Cyclothrix) australica Lundblad, 1941a by Martin and Smit (2002) are considered to belong to Neolimnochares Lundblad, 1941c. Neolimnocharinae subfam. n. is proposed and discussed. For larvae assigned to this subfamily, parasitic on veliid water bugs (Rhagovelia Mayr, 1865) and with extraordinary morphological modifications, new taxa are proposed: Veliacola gen. n., (V. mirificus sp. n., Madagascar); Archaeveliacola gen. n. (A. papuanus sp. n., Indonesia, A. smiti sp. n., Australia); Armaveliacola gen. n. (A. rhagoveliae sp. n., Madagascar, A. major sp. n., Madagascar, A. minor sp. n., Cameroon, Kenya); Isoveliacola gen. n. (I. costaricensis sp. n., Costa Rica, I. borneoensis sp. n., Indonesia). Additional records are: Veliacola sp. (Dominican Republic), Archaeveliacola sp. (Bolivia), and Isoveliacola sp. (Belize). Neolimnochares (Paracyclothrix) Lundblad, 1967 is synonymised with Limnochares (Cyclothrix) Wolcott, 1905, resulting in Limnochares (Cyclothrix) hyaliniseta (Lundblad, 1969) comb. n., and L.
