    Parenting with a disability: exploring the satisfaction and efficacy of the PediaLift wheelchair accessible crib

Previous literature has shown that assistive technology (AT) can be a viable solution to help an individual with a disability participate in everyday roles. Although AT can increase ability of parents with disabilities to care for their children, there are many barriers that prevent them from getting the AT that they need. Some of these barriers include a lack of training and awareness by healthcare providers regarding AT options, a lack of rehabilitation therapists’ feeling they are competent to provide AT options for their clients. and funding barriers. One issue that impacts the ability to get funding for AT is the lack of research supporting the efficacy of the technology. An AT device specifically designed for parents with disabilities is an adaptive crib called PediaLift. Health insurance companies are resistant to funding the PediaLift stating that there is no evidence in the literature to support its efficacy. Materials and Methods: In this study, we investigated the efficacy of the Pedialift crib by using the Quebec User Evaluation of Satisfaction with Assistive Technology 2.0 (QUEST 2.0) survey and the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM) with individuals who have already purchased and used the device. Results: Findings revealed that overall users were satisfied with the device and services provided. Conclusion: Participants were more able to participate in the role of parenting after obtaining the Pedialift.Implications for Rehabilitation Parents with disabilities face multiple barriers in providing childcare to their infants.     The persuasion process of sponsorship and nonsponsorship activation and the dual mediation model

The current study introduces the Dual Mediation Model (DMM) as a user perspective framework to explore the persuasive process of sponsorship and nonsponsorship activation across countries and brands. Data were collected from 1,850 respondents in Australia, the US, Malaysia, and China to examine consumer decision making for Adidas (i.e., sponsor) and Nike (i.e., nonsponsor) in the associations both brands have activated with the 2002-2014 FIFA World Cup (FWC). The majority of the hypotheses were supported, suggesting the DMM\u27s ability to explain the impacts of sponsorship and nonsponsorship activation on cognitive, affective, and conative behavior across countries. Significant differences were also perceived in the attitude-purchase intention relationship between Australia and the other countries for Adidas, and between the US and the other three countries for Nike. Theoretically, the DMM presents researchers with a user perspective framework for the persuasion process in consumer decision making, which has been empirically tested and validated across four countries and two global brands. Managerially, findings reiterate to event organizers and brand managers that sponsorship activation requires activational communication, which should culminate in unique positioning and differentiation for sponsor brands

    Leader emergence and affective empathy: A dynamic test of the dual-hormone hypothesis

Personal distress is a building block of empathy, yet has received scant attention in studies of individual differences in leadership. We investigate whether the effect of leader emergence on men’s distress is influenced by their personalized power motive (p Power) and changes in their testosterone (T) and cortisol (C) levels. In an experiment involving 96 males, p Power modulated the direction and intensity of T change in emergent leaders, with high p-Power leaders showing a more positive T change compared to their low p-Power counterparts. We also conducted a dynamic test of the dual-hormone hypothesis in which participants’ changes in T and C interacted to produce differences in personal distress. Contrary to expectations, positive changes in T were associated with increased distress at negative changes in C. Given that high T and low C are associated with leadership, we explain these findings and question the assumption that personal distress represents a shortcoming in leaders

    Phase reddening on asteroid Bennu from visible and near-infrared spectroscopy

The NASA mission OSIRIS-REx (Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security-Regolith Explorer) has been observing near-Earth asteroid (101955) Bennu in close proximity since December 2018. In October 2020, the spacecraft collected a sample of surface material from Bennu to return to Earth. Aims. In this work, we investigate spectral phase reddening - that is, the variation of spectral slope with phase angle - on Bennu using spectra acquired by the OSIRIS-REx Visible and InfraRed Spectrometer (OVIRS) covering a phase angle range of 8-130°. We investigate this process at the global scale and for some localized regions of interest (ROIs), including boulders, craters, and the designated sample collection sites of the OSIRIS-REx mission. Methods. Spectra were wavelength- and flux-calibrated, then corrected for the out-of-band contribution and thermal emission, resampled, and finally converted into radiance factor per standard OVIRS processing. Spectral slopes were computed in multiple wavelength ranges from spectra normalized at 0.55 μm. Results. Bennu has a globally negative spectra slope, which is typical of B-type asteroids. The spectral slope gently increases in a linear way up to a phase angle of 90°, where it approaches zero. The spectral phase reddening is monotonic and wavelength-dependent with highest values in the visible range. Its coefficient is 0.00044 μm-1 deg-1 in the 0.55-2.5 μm range. For observations of Bennu acquired at high phase angle (130°), phase reddening increases exponentially, and the spectral slope becomes positive. Similar behavior was reported in the literature for the carbonaceous chondrite Mukundpura in spectra acquired at extreme geometries. Some ROIs, including the sample collection site, Nightingale, have a steeper phase reddening coefficient than the global average, potentially indicating a surface covered by fine material with high micro-roughness. Conclusions. The gentle spectral phase reddening effect on Bennu is similar to that observed in ground-based measurements of other B-type asteroids, but much lower than that observed for other low-albedo bodies such as Ceres or comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. Monotonic reddening may be associated with the presence of fine particles at micron scales and/or of particles with fractal structure that introduce micro- and sub-micro roughness across the surface of Bennu

The NASA Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security-Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-REx) mission has obtained thousands of spectra of asteroid (101955) Bennu with the OSIRIS-REx Visible and InfraRed Spectrometer. Aims. We present a spectral search for minor absorption bands and determine compositional variations on the surface of Bennu. Methods. Reflectance spectra with low and high spatial resolutions were analyzed for evidence of weak absorption bands. Spectra were also divided by a global average spectrum to isolate unique spectral features, and variations in the strongest band depths were mapped on a surface shape model. The global visible to near-IR spectrum of Bennu shows evidence of several weak absorption bands with depths of a few percent. Results. Several observed bands are consistent with phyllosilicates, and their distribution correlates with the stronger 2.74-μm hydration band. A 0.55-μm band is consistent with iron oxides and is deepest in the spectrally reddest areas on Bennu. The presence of hydrated phyllosilicates and iron oxides indicates substantial aqueous alteration in Bennu\u27s past. Conclusions. Bennu\u27s spectra are not identical to a limited set of carbonaceous chondrite spectra, possibly due to compositional properties and spatial scale differences; however, returned samples should contain a mixture of common chondrite materials

    Factorial design of experiments for optimization of photocatalytic degradation of tartrazine by zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods with different aspect ratios

    © 2020 Elsevier Ltd. The photocatalytic degradation of the azo dye tartrazine using zinc oxide (ZnO) as photocatalyst under ultraviolet light was investigated using a 24 factorial design. The variables studied were the aspect ratio of ZnO nanorods, the ZnO dosage (400 or 700 mg/L), the initial pH (7 or 10) of the tartrazine solution, and the H2O2 volume (0 or 30 µL). These variables were considered aiming to maximize the tartrazine removal efficiency and the pseudo-1st-order rate constant of the removal process. The ZnO aspect ratio was tuned by varying the Lewis base during the synthesis, hexamethylenetetramine (HMTA) was used to prepare ZnO with a low aspect ratio (ZnO_LowAR), and NaOH was used to prepare ZnO with a high aspect ratio (ZnO_HighAR). The microstructural characterizations indicated that ZnO_LowAR and ZnO_HighAR nanorods have similar structural, textural, and optical properties. The only exception was the dimensions of the nanorods obtained, which could result in differences in the facets exposed on each type of nanorod surface. The factorial design revealed that the ZnO aspect ratio, the initial pH of the tartrazine solution, and the H2O2 volume all have significant primary effects. In contrast, the ZnO dosage is not significant neither in the tartrazine removal efficiency nor in the pseudo-1st-order rate constant. Statistical models considering the coefficients of the significant interactions were obtained, leading to consistent predicted results in comparison to the results experimentally obtained. The conditions leading to highest removal efficiency (~92 %) and pseudo-1st-order rate constant (3.81 × 10-2 min-1) were carried out with ZnO_HighAR, initial pH 7, and without H2O2, which outperformed the TiO2 P-25 under the same conditions

    The fractured messaging of the national collegiate athletic association and its members in response to COVID-19

    © 2020 Human Kinetics, Inc. The sports world\u27s near universal moratorium in response to the COVID-19 pandemic was abrupt and unprecedented. From professional leagues to youth sports, doors were closed to competitions and events to help stop the spread of the coronavirus. The hiatus began at one of the busiest times on the calendar for sport, with the National Basketball Association and National Hockey League seasons concluding; the Women\u27s National Basketball Association and National Football League drafts taking place; Major League Baseball\u27s spring training nearing its conclusion; the Professional Golf Association and Ladies Professional Golf Association Tours starting their seasons; and the National Collegiate Athletic Association\u27s marquee events, the Division-I men\u27s and women\u27s basketball tournaments, set to begin. The suddenness of the interruption was met with a need by the various sport entities to engage their public with information about their respective responses. The statements that emerged on or after March 12 - the day the sports world stopped - were not all the same. Many of the statements, in fact, were quite different. That was especially the case with the National Collegiate Athletic Association, whose governance structure and messaging practices hindered their ability to have a uniform response. The purpose of this essay was to examine the public messaging of sport leagues and organizations and to discuss the effectiveness (or ineffectiveness) of those public statements

    Total coliform and generic E. Coli levels, and salmonella presence in eight experimental aquaponics and hydroponics systems: A brief report highlighting exploratory data

Although many studies have investigated foodborne pathogen prevalence in conventional produce production environments, relatively few have investigated prevalence in aquaponics and hydroponics systems. This study sought to address this knowledge gap by enumerating total coliform and generic E. coli levels, and testing for Salmonella presence in circulating water samples collected from five hydroponic systems and three aquaponic systems (No. of samples = 79). While total coliform levels ranged between 6.3 Most Probable Number (MPN)/100-mL and the upper limit of detection (2496 MPN/100-mL), only three samples had detectable levels of E. coli and no samples had detectable levels of Salmonella. Of the three E. coli positive samples, two samples had just one MPN of E. coli/100-mL while the third had 53.9 MPN of E. coli/100-mL. While the sample size reported here was small and site selection was not randomized, this study adds key data on the microbial quality of aquaponics and hydroponics systems to the literature. Moreover, these data suggest that contamination in these systems occurs at relatively low-levels, and that future studies are needed to more fully explore when and how microbial contamination of aquaponics and hydroponic systems is likely to occur

    Said, Auerbach, and the Return to Philological Hermeneutics

This essay explores the relationship between Edward Said’s well-known contrapuntal reading of history and Erich Auerbach’s Ansatzpunkt, or point of departure, as a means of entering a given hermeneutic circle. Although Auerbach occupied an increasingly prominent place in Said’s critical thought, his engagement with the work of the German philologist has been largely ignored or downplayed. In this essay I take the figure of exile, which is so central to Said’s scholarship and which he explicitly links with the intellectual mission of critique, as a point of departure for a deepened exploration of Said’s critical method—a method developed in critical dialogue with Auerbach’s work. Building on the existing literature, I argue that Auerbach offers more than simply a way for Said to problematize identity politics and to challenge the dogmatism of received notions of home and political belonging. More than this, I argue that the German philologist provides Said with a way to reconfigure the dialectic between history and literature; to develop his contrapuntal approach to reading history; and to rethink the parameters of a historicist humanism that, in turn, enables him to reactivate the critical potential of philological hermeneutics
