Parenting as Occupation: Occupational Therapists’ Perspectives on Working with Parents in Mental Health
Millions of Americans suffer from mental illness in the United States and of those, a large percentage are parents. There is a lack of research in the literature about occupational therapy interventions related to parenting for clients in acute phases of mental illness. The purpose of this study was to understand the practice patterns of occupational therapists providing services to parents with mental health illness, as well as the barriers and facilitators associated with the ability to address parenting in mental health practice. This study was a phenomenological qualitative design utilizing two phone interviews per participant. Four participants working in inpatient mental health settings from three different facilities participated. Six themes were identified from the data analysis. Themes related to barriers included parenting is secondary, lack of familiarity, and lack of access. Themes related to supports included supports vary and relevant skills. An overall theme related to practice patterns emerged: a desire for change. The results showed there are multiple barriers that must be overcome in order to provide interventions on parenting in an inpatient mental health setting and that the resources occupational therapists have vary greatly based on the facility. The implications for occupational therapy include the need to identify parenting as a goal, more education on the topic in occupational therapy programs and continuing education courses, and creative solutions to overcome lack of access to children and families. More research is needed to further understand the clinical reasoning behind decision making with a broader range of participants and to understand occupational therapy’s role in working with the children of parents with mental illness to address their concerns
10-N-heterocylic aryl-isoxazole-amides (AIMs) have robust anti-tumor activity against breast and brain cancer cell lines and useful fluorescence properties
© 2020 Elsevier Ltd A novel series of anthracenyl-isoxazole amide (AIM) antitumor agents containing N-heterocycles in the 10 position (N-het) were synthesized using palladium cross-coupling. The unique steric environment of the N-het-AIMs required individual optimization in each case. Lanthanide mediated double activation was used to couple the dimethylamino pyrrole moiety, required for antitumor action. Robust antitumor activity was observed against breast and brain cancer cell lines. The compounds were docked with the c-myc oncogene promoter sequence, which adopts a G4 quadruplex DNA conformation, and represents the working hypothesis for biological action. The N-het-AIMs have useful fluorescence properties, allowing for observation of their distribution within tumor cells
Photometry of Particles Ejected From Active Asteroid (101955) Bennu

Near-Earth asteroid (101955) Bennu is an active asteroid experiencing mass loss in the form of ejection events emitting up to hundreds of millimeter- to centimeter-scale particles. The close proximity of the Origins, Spectral Interpretations, Resource Identification, and Security–Regolith Explorer spacecraft enabled monitoring of particles for a 10-month period encompassing Bennu\u27s perihelion and aphelion. We found 18 multiparticle ejection events, with masses ranging from near zero to hundreds of grams (or thousands with uncertainties) and translational kinetic energies ranging from near zero to tens of millijoules (or hundreds with uncertainties). We estimate that Bennu ejects ~104 g per orbit. The largest event took place on 6 January 2019 and consisted of ~200 particles. The observed mass and translational kinetic energy of the event were between 459 and 528 g and 62 and 77 mJ, respectively. Hundreds of particles not associated with the multiparticle ejections were also observed. Photometry of the best-observed particles, measured at phase angles between ~70° and 120°, was used to derive a linear phase coefficient of 0.013 ± 0.005 magnitudes per degree of phase angle. Ground-based data back to 1999 show no evidence of past activity for Bennu; however, the currently observed activity is orders of magnitude lower than observed at other active asteroids and too low be observed remotely. There appears to be a gentle decrease in activity with distance from the Sun, suggestive of ejection processes such as meteoroid impacts and thermal fracturing, although observational bias may be a factor
The impact of LSVT BIG therapy on postural control for individuals with Parkinson disease: A case series

Background and Purpose: LSVT BIG therapy may improve motor function and gait in those with early Parkinson disease (PD), but its impact on postural control for those with moderate PD has not been investigated. The purpose of this case series is to describe the impact of LSVT BIG therapy on postural control and gait in three individuals with moderate PD. Intervention: Three individuals with moderate PD, classified as stage 3 on the Hoehn and Yahr Scale, participated in the LSVT BIG therapy program. Intervention included 16–18 individual physical therapy sessions, provided within 4 weeks, focused on increasing amplitude of movement and a daily home exercise program. Outcomes, including balance, gait, dual-task performance, quality of life, and balance confidence, were examined after program completion, 1- and 4-months later. Outcomes: Clinically meaningful improvements in balance and gait, including performance under dual-task conditions, were achieved by all patients and many of these improvements were maintained up to 4 months later. Changes in quality of life were not observed during the length of the intervention. Conclusion: LSVT BIG therapy may improve postural control, gait, and dual-task performance, and therefore reduce fall risk for individuals with moderate PD
Modeling emergency response operations: A theory building survey
© 2020 Elsevier Ltd During the response phase of an emergency, decision makers manage processes that save lives, protect infrastructure and contain evolving threats. In this paper, we undertake a comprehensive survey of the emergency response operations literature. In collating and classifying our literature sample, we employ novel methodologies adapted from unsupervised learning and network analysis to reduce sampling and expectancy biases. We find that operations research supporting emergency response has been developing in discernible clusters, with each cluster of studies focused on a particular process such as evacuation or aid distribution. Our study both serves to strengthen the theoretical foundation of emergency response operations and identifies plentiful opportunities for researchers seeking to advance the state-of-the-art in this exciting frontier of operations research
Live tweeting live debates: How Twitter reflects and refracts the US political climate in a campaign season

Political campaigns mostly run parallel to each other during an election cycle, but intersect when the main candidates face off for televised debates. They offer supporters of these candidates a chance to engage with each other while being exposed to views and opinions different from their own. This study uses a combination of social network analysis and machine learning to examine how the three US presidential debates of 2016 were live tweeted (N = ∼300,000). We find that despite cross-cutting exposure across the ideological divide, people remain highly partisan in terms of who they engage with on Twitter. The issue agendas of Twitter posts during the US presidential debates is set well in advance of the debates themselves; it is highly negative and focused on personality traits of the opposition candidate rather than policy matters. We also detect a shift in the nature of online opinion leadership, with grassroots activists and internet personalities sharing the space with traditional elites such as political leaders and journalists. This shift coincides with the broader anti-establishment turn in the US political climate, as reflected in the early success of Bernie Sanders and the eventual victory of a political outsider like Donald Trump over the seasoned Hillary Clinton
Ground and In-Flight Calibration of the OSIRIS-REx Camera Suite

The OSIRIS-REx Camera Suite (OCAMS) onboard the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft is used to study the shape and surface of the mission’s target, asteroid (101955) Bennu, in support of the selection of a sampling site. We present calibration methods and results for the three OCAMS cameras—MapCam, PolyCam, and SamCam—using data from pre-flight and in-flight calibration campaigns. Pre-flight calibrations established a baseline for a variety of camera properties, including bias and dark behavior, flat fields, stray light, and radiometric calibration. In-flight activities updated these calibrations where possible, allowing us to confidently measure Bennu’s surface. Accurate calibration is critical not only for establishing a global understanding of Bennu, but also for enabling analyses of potential sampling locations and for providing scientific context for the returned sample
Gender, Decent Work, and Global Production Sharing in Indonesian Manufacturing

This article uses the Decent Work framework from the International Labour Organization to analyze employment outcomes for Indonesian workers in manufacturing. This research investigates trends in feminized manufacturing sectors in variously sized firms. Regression analyses is used to evaluate how firm characteristics related to global production sharing effect decent work outcomes for women and men, as well as female share of employment itself. The results suggest that exports and FDI affect men and women differently and that feminization and decent work outcomes depend on how the sector is positioned along the global value chain
Classifying Czech melodrama: Mrs. Morality sweeps through the protectorate

In 1998, the Czech National Film Archive (Národní filmový archive/NFA) classified sixty-seven feature-length fiction films produced between 1930 and 1945 as generic melodramas in their volumes of Czech Feature Film (Český hraný film). This essay considers how this retrospective genre classification offers entry into understanding melodrama’s aesthetic and cultural operations in Czech cinema. The focus is less on how the NFA defined the genre, than how these volumes, in bringing melodrama into critical view, reveal important assumptions about its cultural and historical affiliations with foreign co-productions. Starting by outlining some of the problems presented by the volumes of Czech Feature Film, this essay highlights some key questions that emerge in studying the complicated relationship between Czech and German popular film genres. In particular, it focuses on melodrama’s relationship to films made during the Nazi occupation of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, when films were necessarily co-produced with the Nazified film industry. Through a close reading and reception study of Saturday (Sobota, Václav Wasserman, 1945) this essay considers how the perception of melodrama films as light entertainment during the Nazi occupation provided yet another opportunity for these films on Czechoslovak state television during the post-1968 period of normalization
