Perspectives of Adults With Autism on Social Communication Intervention
No full text© Hammill Institute on Disabilities 2020. Social communication difficulties are part of the core difficulties experienced by individuals with autism. Speech-language pathologists provide intervention and supports for these difficulties. Little is known about the own experiences and views of adults with autism about these services. Using semi-structured ethnographic interviewing, perspectives of eight adults (six currently attending college) with autism on social communication intervention were investigated. Participants articulated strengths and weaknesses in social communication, offering frank views of interventions received. Five themes regarding social communication intervention emerged: belief that intervention was ineffective and unnecessary; preference for one-on-one intervention; need for more real-world practice; friend and peer challenges and successes; and desire for more neurotypical understanding. Participants additionally offered general views on social functioning as well as advice for communication partners and other people with autism. In designing interventions for social communication impairments, the experiences and beliefs of those receiving the interventions should be a central element

No full textGiovanni Battista (Giambattista) Piranesi (1720-1778) was an Italian artist that was known for his etchings of Rome and of creating fictitious and atmospheric “prisons.” Piranesi studied under Giuseppe Vasi, who introduced him to etching and engraving. Piranesi focused on the city and its monuments when doing art. No full textNorman Daly (1911-2008) is a Pennsylvania born American artist. He was trained in fine arts at Carnegie Tech, the University of Colorado, the University of Paris, and Ohio State. Daly did graduate work at the Institute of Fine Arts of New York University. He briefly taught at Oberlin and Rutgers before joining Cornell University in the Department of Art from 1942-1999. He painted primarily in the 40s and 50s before turning to sculpture in the 60s. He concentrated on his conception of an “imaginary” civilization, the Civilization of Llhuros, which was the first and still pre-eminent presentation of archaeological art.
