Ithaca had not yet shuttered its restaurants. Students at Cornell University and Ithaca College were attending class, business as usual. The words pandemic and quarantine had not become part of our everyday vocabulary. Program Notes
I Will Lift Up Mine Eyes is a short cantata for soloist and piano or
orchestra.  It sets texts of Psalms 121, 13, and 23.   
Adolphus Hailstork’s eightieth birthday year is 2021, and his music is perhaps
being appreciated more than it ever has been.  The composer said this about
his journey:
“I am an African-American. There exists a distinct and rich African-American
musical heritage that is more than pop, but has influenced worldwide popular
music. That legacy, beginning with the slave songs, is an important part of
me which I had overlooked in my attempt be a classical modernist. Over the
decades of my career, I have written some pieces with zero African-American
idioms, some other pieces strongly drawing from that rich vein, pieces with
Euro-American and African-American styles juxtaposed, and some with both
blended in varying strengths. My journey to self increasingly has included
music idioms of my people, the gift handed down as folk music, or church
music, or jazz, or blues.” 
This work is one in which the composer draws strongly on what he calls
“African-American idioms,” notably in movements two and three.  The
strength of the work is in the antecedent second movement in which the
question is asked “How Long, O Lord,”; and the consequent third movement,
“The Lord is My Shepherd,” which answers the question through musical
assurance and soaring melody.    
Movement three recalls themes of the first two movements before an
expansive statement, “Alleluia.”  The ecstatic exuberance of this movement
is cooled in the last ten measures of the work, as the piano gently reminds
“How long, o Lord?”, and the singers respond with a last, muted “Alleluia.”
In Bright Mansions Above is an early arrangement of brilliant composer
and arranger Roland M. Carter. The beginning is striking in its beauty on
"Ah’s", imitating the voices of angels singing and evoking the arrival of
freedom. Gorgeous voice leading filled with suspensions as well as vivid
counterpoint all lead to a modulation which marks the beginning of a majestic
procession and arrival into Heaven. The piece ends in a very intimate and
improvisatory gospel manner.

Biographies
Sean Linfors is in his fifth year as the Associate Director of Choral Activities
and Assistant Professor of Choral Music Education at Ithaca College School of
Music, and is currently serving as Interim Director of Choral Activities. He
holds a Ph.D. in Choral Music Education from Florida State University, and is
an active conductor, clinician, and educator, as well as being an advocate for
access to music education. At Ithaca, Linfors has taught conducting, choral
literature, and rehearsal techniques, as well as choral ensembles. He is the
Artistic Director of the Syracuse Chorale, and was recently named conductor
of the Cayuga Vocal Ensemble.

Stress and Flow

Stress and flow, bright and dark and light and shadow are all description of
the juxtapositions and contrasts that characterize this work and are arrived at
through various rhythmic processes and the use of electronic means to
produce new sound worlds. These sound worlds are not meaningful in
themselves but work as an extension of the sound of the mallet instruments
featured in the piece.
1. Bright & Dark
The first movement begins by unfolding dark and heavy rhythms and colours
that are gradually transformed into brighter ones and eventually juxtaposed
to each other in contrasting ways.
2. The Sound Behind
Working with electronics makes it possible to develop ‘the sound behind’ the
notes or chord played by the four percussionists. Here, what happens to the
sound after each note or chord is played is as important as the themes,
harmonies and rhythms which these notes create.  I kept the tempo of the
music quite slow so that the listener may have time to focus on the colour,
texture, and complexity of the sound world that emerges from behind the

may the devil take me is inspired by the following passage in Cervantes'
iconic work, Don Quixote:
Sancho Panza hung on his words but said none of his own,
and from time to time he turned his head to see if he could see the knights and giants
his master was naming; since he could not make out any of them he said,
"Señor, may the devil take me, but no man, giant, or knight of all those your grace has
menitoned can be seen anywhere around here; at least, I don't see them; maybe it's all
enchantment, like last night's phantoms."
"How can you say that?" responded Don Quixote.  "Do you not hear the neighing of the
horses, the call of the clarions, the sounds of the drums?"
"I don't hear anything," responded Sancho, "except the bleating of lots of sheep."
I'm fascinated by the idea that one character's reality is so at odds with
another's. This bears out musically by converting triangles into objects that
are contrary to their true nature.  They aren't resonant but are choked or
muted.  Perhaps this makes them untrue somehow. Perhaps the counterpoint
of true and untrue sounds creates a kind of sonic enchantment reflecting the
world between reality and fiction that Cervantes creates.  (Amy Beth Kirsten)

"Stephon Clark was shot and killed March 18, 2018 by the Sacramento Police
Department. The two cops were looking for someone reportedly smashing
windows, and found Clark in his grandmother's yard. He resisted
confrontation and ran, and the police swore he was pointing a gun at them.
So they shot at him twenty times.Once closer to the dead body, they found
that there was no gun - only a white iPhone. Eight bullets had made contact -
six in his back. Stephon was a father of two, in his grandmother's yard. At the
end of the cops' body cam video, a cop suggests "Hey, mute?" just before the
audio recording stops. 
Stevonte Clark, Brother: "Say his name. You're going to know his name
forever. You're going to know him. You're going to remember this." Sequita
Thompson, Grandmother: "C'mon now, they didn't have to do that."
Darrell Steinberg, Sacramento Mayor: "The questions raised by the
community and council members are appropriate and must be answered
during the investigation. Based on the videos alone, I cannot second-guess
the split-second decisions of our officers, and I'm not going to do that."Police:
"Hey, show me your hands. Stop. Stop. Hey - show me your hands. Gun gun
gun.
We need to know if you're ok. We need to get you to medics, so we can't go
over and get you help until we know you don't have a weapon.
...
Hey, mute?"
