Biographies
Jonathan Swensen first fell in love with the cello upon hearing the
Elgar Concerto at the age of six, and ultimately made his concerto
debut at the age of twenty performing that very piece with Portugal’s
Orquestra Sinfónica do Porto Casa da Música. Since then, he has
appeared with the Orquesta Ciudad de Granada, Venice State
Symphony Orchestra, Denmark’s Aarhus Symphony Orchestra, and
Poland’s NFM Leopoldinum Orchestra.
Mr. Swensen has captured First Prizes at the 2018 Young Concert
Artists International Auditions, 2018 Khachaturian International Cello
Competition, and 2019 Windsor International String Competition. In
his native Denmark, he was recipient of the Jacob Gades Scholarship
in 2019, the Léonie Sonning Talent Prize in 2017, and First Prize at
the 2016 Danish String Competition. 
Mr. Swensen has made debuts with the Copenhagen Philharmonic,
Phiharmonia Orchestra at Windsor Castle and Sun Symphony
Orchestra in Vietnam, and he recently performed a reengagement
with Denmark’s Aarhus Symphony Orchestra. 
In the United States this past season, the Young Concert Artists Series
presented Mr. Swensen’s recital debuts in New York on the Michaels
Award Concert at Merkin Concert Hall, and in Washington, DC on the
Alexander Kasza-Kasser Concert at the Kennedy Center’s Terrace
Theater. This season, he gives recitals at the Friends of Music
Concerts Series, the Jewish Community Alliance in Jacksonville, FL,
and on the YCA “Encores” Series at the Morgan Library & Museum in
New York. 
Recent recital and chamber music appearances outside of the U.S.
have included a return to Armenia to take part in the Khachaturian
Festival in Yerevan, the Usedomer Musikfestival in Germany, the
Tivoli Festival in Copenhagen and a South Korean debut at the Seoul
Arts Centre. He is also a frequent performer at festivals in Denmark,
including the Schubertiaden, the Copenhagen Summer Festival and
the Hindsgavl Summer Festival. 
A graduate of the Royal Danish Academy of Music, Jonathan Swensen
studies with Professor Torleif Thedéen at the Norwegian Academy of
Music in Oslo. He also begins his graduate studies at the New England
Conservatory of Music this year.
Armenian-born Marianna Shirinyan is one of the most creative and
sought after pianists in Europe today. Her vibrant and virtuosic
musicianship puts her in demand, both as soloist and as chamber
musician. Shirinyan plays with great sensitivity, understanding,
technical brilliance and beauty of tone, which allows her to offer a
wide range of repertoire. Her love for the music and her joy in sharing
it with a larger audience are apparent in her performances. 
She has received Danish Broadcasting Corporation’s prestigious P2
award for her contribution to Danish music life and the critics prize of
the association of Danish critics. She is a frequent guest at a string of
international music festivals, among them the Schleswig-Holstein
Music Festival, Bodensee Festival, the Schwetzinger Festspiele, MDR
Summer Music Festival, Festspillene in Bergen. 
Simultaneously she has won a reputation as one of this generation's
leading pianists through solo appearances with orchestras as the
Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Danish National Symphony
Orchestra, Oslo, Helsinki and Copenhagen Philharmonic Orchestras,
Munich Symphony Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra,
Kammerakademie Potsdam, Göteborg Symphony Orchestra,
Orchestre Philharmonique de Nice to name a few. She enjoyed
collaborations with conductors such as Michael Balke, Lawrence
Foster, Zoltan Kocsis, Antonello Manacorda, Jun Märkl, Eva Ollikainen,
Daniel Raiskin, Lan Shui, Thomas Søndergård, Marc Soustrot, Krysztof
Urbanski and Joshua Weilerstein. 
Shirinyan is a professor of piano at the Norwegian Academy of Music
in Oslo, a Steinway artist and artistic director of the Oremandsgaard
Chamber Music Festival in Denmark. From the summer 2020 also
co-artistic director of the Valdres Sommersymfoni in Norway. 
Shirinyan has a bright discography. All the CD’s have been received
enthusiastically by international reviewers and listeners alike. Her
latest release, Fantasy for Piano and Orchestra by Louis Glass,
recorded with the Rheinische Philharmonie Koblenz under the baton
of maestro Daniel Raiskin, was awarded the P2 prize of the Danish
radio in 2018.

William (“Bill”) and Angela Haines are generous supporters of Ithaca College
who are committed to creating transformative experiences for students and
all members of the IC community. 
The Haines’s philanthropy extends across many aspects of the IC experience;
among their contributions, Bill and Angela are longtime supporters of the IC
Annual Fund, and provided crucial gifts to support the construction of the
School of Business and other major college initiatives. 
Lifelong music lovers, Bill and Angela are dedicated supporters of IC’s School
of Music.  They also support Young Concert Artists in New York, a nonprofit
organization that discovers and launches the careers of exceptional
musicians from all over the world. Through a series of rigorous competitions,
four or five winners are chosen annually and provided with management
services and debut recitals in New York and Washington and performing
opportunities across the U.S. and abroad. Among the 2019 winners was IC
assistant professor of saxophone Steven Banks. 
Connecting the dots between Ithaca College and YCA, Angela and Bill were
inspired to invest in the School of Music through a gift to sponsor a residency
in the school each semester featuring a current or past winner of the YCA
competition. The Angela and William Haines Young Concert Artists
Residency will support in-residence teaching opportunities for the School of
Music, including recital performances, master classes, lectures, coaching,
mentoring, and feedback sessions. 
Bill, a nationally recognized real estate investor and developer who is
chairman of The Bromley Companies, served on the IC Board of Trustees for
11 years, including five years as chair. He was named chair emeritus in 2006.
During his time on the board, Bill served with distinction on numerous trustee
committees including Building and Grounds, Investment and Finance, Audit,
Campus Life and Community, Educational Policy, and Trusteeship
Committees. Angela, a widely published journalist, author, and career coach,
shares Bill’s incredible commitment to enhancing the IC experience. 
Bill and Angela live in New York City and have two children.

Program Notes
Published in Lima, Peru by Gerónimo de Contreras in 1631, Hanacpachap cussicuinin
 has the distinction of being the first piece of polyphonic music printed in the Western
Hemisphere. Although the composer is unknown, this piece was likely composed as a
prayer to be sung in processions as the native parishioners enter the church. The
language of this work is Quechua, the imperial language of the Inca. The Inca
worshiped and revered the world in which they lived. The Apus (mountains) and 
Pakarin (lakes), the Taytay Inti (sun) and Pachamama (Mother Earth) were their gods;
they were sacred, and to harm them would have been to harm themselves. In Incan
cosmology, the universe was made up of three worlds: Hanacpacha (upper
world/cosmos), Kaypacha (the earth's surface), and Uccupacha (the earth's interior). On
leaving this earth, humans rose into the upper world, then descended into the earth
before being delivered back to this world by Pachamama through the power of Apus.
Following the Spanish conquest and Christianization of Peru, a strong connection was
made between Pachamama and the Virgin Mary. This work has been reworked by Juan
Pérez Bocanegra, a parish priest, both textually and harmonically to reflect a fusion of
Incan and Spanish values. - Notes written by Christopher Moroney. 
America the Beautiful: The famous poem by Katherine Lee Bates set here
by composer R. Nathaniel Dett was written in 1893 at the top of Pikes Peak
just outside of Colorado Springs Colorado. The poem was published in 1895.
R. Nathaniel Dett was a Black nationalistic composer, educator, conductor,
pianist, essayist, and poet whose work helped to change the perspective of
music of Black composers during the early twentieth century. He published
this piece during another global pandemic, the 1918 Influenza Pandemic
which killed an estimated 50 million people worldwide between 1918-1919 as
World War I came to an end. R. Nathaniel Dett was born in 1882 in
Drummondville, Ontario which is the exit point for the Underground Railroad.
At the age of 11 he moved to New York. He was the first Black composer to
receive a Bachelor of Music from Oberlin Conservatory, and was the founding
Director of Music at Hampton College (now University). His wife, soprano
Helen Elise Smith was the first Black graduate of Damrosch Institute, which
later became Julliard. In 1917, Dett stated, “I am a musician whose ambition
in life is the advancement of my people, and who believes absolutely in
equality of opportunity for all peoples, regardless of race, creed, or color, or
previous conditions of servitude.”
Artur Schnabel characterized Mozart's music as "too simple for children and
too difficult for adults." Ave verum corpus (K. 618) is one of W.A. Mozart's
most well-known choral works and a prime example of the simplicity and
difficulty of his writing. This short motet was written less than six months
before Mozart's death and stylistically foreshadows musical elements of his
Requiem. The gentle and uncomplicated melody has allowed the work to
become a staple in choral literature.
Dreams of Thee is taken from the Romantic poem “Lines to an Indian Air”
by Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792-1822) and set by Eric William Barnum. The
lyric poem, which tells the tale of one who wakes, walks through a beautiful
Indian night to the window of his beloved, then falls, fainting and overcome
with powerful emotions. The sweeping lines of the piano and violin
accompaniment lend itself to the overwhelming feelings described in the
poetry before the final moments of contentment. 
Sitting in Limbo: This collection of tunes was performed by the
world-renowned Soweto Gospel Choir in Soweto, South Africa on their album,
“African Spirit” in 2007. This multi-Grammy-award winning ensemble
traditionally performs a wide variety of music including African and American
Southern Gospel, Reggae, Negro Spirituals, and Popular music. This upbeat
medley is a perfect example of how these diverse genres can work together
in call and response form that is characteristic of traditional singing in South
Africa. It begins with Sitting in Limbo, a reggae song written by Jimmy Cliff
and Guilly Bright. The singers lament on the feeling of being in “limbo”, or a
feeling of being in-between and waiting for a breakthrough. This metaphor
works perfectly with us as choral musicians as we have worked through the
process of ensemble singing in a global pandemic in the 2020-2021 year! We
then transition to This Little Light of Mine, a song whose origins are obscure
but has deeply rooted history in Black churches in the United States. It is
commonly used as a protest song, a practice beginning in the Civil Rights
Movement and continuing today. The choir then sings the same song using
the Zulu text, “M’Lilo Vuta Mathanjeni” which loosely translates to “this little
light of mine”, but the direct translation is, “in the fire burned the rings”. Zulu
is a Bantu language, and is one of South Africa’s eleven official languages,
spoken by more than 12 million speakers. The piece ends with the Southern
Gospel Hymn, If We Ever Needed the Lord Before written by Thomas Dorsey
in 1943. South Africans faced segregation by race and culture with the
apartheid ideology and legislature by the National Party from 1948 to 1994.
Soweto was the location of monumental demonstrations to end apartheid, the
most notable being in 1976. It is no surprise that the Soweto Gospel Choir
arranged this medley of tunes to bridge the gap of biding one’s time and
waiting for a break though to finding the light of freedom.
North was composed by Ryan O’Neal, also known as Sleeping at Last. It
premiered on his first of three concept albums, Atlas I. This first album
reviews the beginning of the universe with three releases: In the Beginning
(Darkness and Light), the Observable Universe (Space I and Space II), and
Earth (Land and Oceans). North is the first song of the Land portion and is
very special to Ryan. In a podcast about this specific piece, he shares that it
was the first song written in the home he and his family moved into when
expecting their first child. He wrote it from his daughter’s future bedroom
when taking a break from unpacking and reflecting on the life that they would
live there. The melodic line captures the juxtaposition of feeling worn-out
from change combined with the earnest hopefulness of imagining a new life.
Ryan states, “it is a prayer that the future will be as hopeful as we imagine as
we uproot and up-plant, and that the roots will take.” In the piece, the text
repeats “Give us bread, give us salt, give us wine.” This line is taken from
Ryan’s favorite movie, It’s a Wonderful Life when George and Mary Bailey
help an immigrant Italian family by granting a loan for them to build their
family home, investing in them as valued members of their community. Mary
and George give the Martini the gifts of bread “that this house may never
know hunger,” salt “that life may always have flavor,” and wine, “that joy and
prosperity may reign forever.” As this song is performed images of “home” as
perceived by the members of the Campus Chorus ensemble will be shown.
These people and places represent their true north and the home of their
hearts.
The traditional Colombian folk song, Juego a que me quemo, is playful in
nature both in terms of music and meaning. In a not so obvious fashion, it
depicts an late night dance and the idea that one can get burned from
picking the wrong partner much in the same way one can become burned
from the flame of a candle. The idea of "sparks" might seem fun but how long
will the flame last? Reading the text and translating it literally will leave you
perplexed as the message reads much like a children's fable with a deeper
meaning.

Biographies
Morgan Jolley earned her Ph.D. in Music Education at the University of South
Florida in Spring, 2020. She is an Assistant Professor in Music Education at
Ithaca College. Dr. Jolley (formerly known as Dr. Burburan) served as the
Interim Director of Choral Studies at the University of South Florida. Dr. Jolley
has experience in teaching from the elementary to the university level and
beyond with community choirs. She is an active choral clinician, adjudicator,
and provides professional development to music educators. Morgan has an
MME from Florida State University and a B.S. in Music Education from the
University of South Florida, and began her education at the University of
Florida studying French Horn. Her research interest is in vocal health and
pedagogy across genres, music cognition, curriculum development, the
democratization of music education with informal and popular music
education in addition to traditional western canon, and student leadership.

The Role of Bedtime in Mental Health and Wellbeing

Introduction Hypotheses
 The effect of sleep on one’s physical health is 
widely researched, while the effect on one’s mental 
health has also been a topic of interest. Many studies 
that have investigated the role of sleep in common 
mental health disorders (CMD), such as depression 
and anxiety, have found that poor sleep quality and 
CMDs occur together (Byrd, et al., 2014). 
 The current study focuses on  bedtime instead 
of total sleep time as the two are only partially cor-
related. Also studies on “social jetlag”, found that 
there is delayed bedtime due to socializing, has also 
been found to impact depression (Oster, H., 2012). 
 
 The �indings suggest that the amount of sleep 
and the time people go to sleep are independent 
factors for mental health. This study also seeks to 
replicate the relationships between anxiety, depres-
sion, psychological resilience, and positive mental 
health.

Method
  The current  research uses data from the 
Healthy Minds study that includes responses from 
62,025 college-aged students who self-reported 
their sleep habits, depressive symptoms, levels of 
anxiety, feelings of positive mental health, psycho-
logical resilience, alcohol use, GPA, and exercise. 
 Due to limitations in calculating sleep total we 
created an adaptive bedtime variable which is a 
related, but different construct. Participants were 
assigned scores based on their average weekday 
bedtime ranging from 8pm to 6am. ** p < 0.001
Results
Discussion
•Earlier bedtime was negatively correlated with depression 
scores on the PHQ-9, r(37388)= -.253, p<.001.
•Earlier bedtime was negatively correlated with anxiety scores 
on GAD-7, r(37375) = -.167, p<.001.
•Earlier bedtime was positively correlated with psychological 
resilience [Brief Resilience Scale], r(21419)= .119, p<.001.
•Earlier bedtime was positively correlated with better mental 
health [Flourishing scale], r(48022)= .172, p<.001.
•Earlier bedtime was positively correlated with higher GPA, 
r(42580)= .149, p<.001.
•Earlier bedtime was negatively correlated with alcohol use 
assessed by the AUDIT scale, r(5391)= -.172, p<.001.
 The results indicate earlier bedtime is 
associated with a wide range of positive out-
comes. Those with earlier bedtimes reported 
fewer depressive symptoms, lower anxiety, 
greater resilience, better mental health, less 
alcohol use, more exercise, and higher GPAs.
 The relationship between sleep and 
mental health is clearly demonstrated in this 
data, thus showing the importance of earlier 
bedtime for wellbeing. Furthermore, while 
there is a relationship between early bedtime 
and total sleep time(r(47685)=.445, p<.001), 
earlier bedtime was a better predictor of de-
pression and anxiety than total sleep time. 
Long sleeping may re�lect positive or negative 
states, relaxation vs exhaustion, while shorter 
sleeping times may re�lect either anxiety or 
positive goal oriented behavior. Consequently, 
total sleep time appears to be less predictive 
than the time someone goes to bed. 
 
 These �indings add to our understanding 
of sleep timing in maintaining mental health 
and wellbeing in college populations. Future 
studies should include experimental models 
that can assess whether changes in bedtime 
are associated with improvements in mental 
health and wellbeing.

Title: Participation in Active Recreation: Perspectives of Adults with Developmental Disabilities 
who use Augmentative and Alternative Communication 
 
1. Background: 
Previous research in augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) has focused on a range 
of passive settings including education, employment, and community integration (Kent-Walsh & 
Light, 2003; McNaughton, Light & Gulla, 2003; Mirenda, 2014); however, less attention has 
been paid to engagement in active recreation and how this area can positively impact individuals 
with complex communication needs who use AAC. The primary research question that was 
explored in this study was: What are the lived experiences and perceptions of individuals with 
developmental disabilities who use AAC and participate in active recreation? 
Active recreational participation (e.g., skiing, paddling) can have extensive benefits for adults 
with disabilities who use AAC (Hajjar et al. 2016; Hajjar & McCarthy, 2016) as these types of 
activities can reduce behavioral and emotional distress, build social networks, and improve 
physical health (Lundberg et al., 2011). The infrastructure of adaptive recreational programs 
supports the process of developing relationships, increasing engagement, and fostering 
independence through teaching new skills (Lundberg et al., 2011).  
 
2. Methods: 
This study, which was approved by the Institutional Review Board at Ithaca College, used a 
qualitative research design involving an online focus group spanning over the course of seven 
weeks. This methodology was used to gain a better understanding of the lived experiences of 
people with developmental disabilities who use AAC and participate in active recreation and 
sport. Focus groups have been used in previous research to explore new phenomena and 
understand the perceptions of people who use AAC (Caron & Light, 2015; McNaughton, Light, 
& Groszyk, 2001).  
Five individuals who use AAC were recruited from around the United States to participate in the 
online focus group. If individuals met all the inclusionary criteria, they completed the consent 
form, screening questionnaire, and the Quality of Communication Life Scale (Paul et al., 2004). 
The focus group participants included; two individuals with cerebral palsy, two individuals with 
autism spectrum disorder, and one person with Rett syndrome.  
The focus group was moderated by the principal investigator and each week topics were posted 
with discussion questions. Some participants responded independently and others required a 
moderate level of support from a caregiver or family member. Participants were encouraged to 
post their perspectives and experiences, while also responding to each other’s comments in the 
focus group.   
 
3. Results: 
Findings from the thematic analysis (Creswell, 2007) of the qualitative data indicated that active 
recreational pursuits provide meaningful opportunities for people who use AAC to engage and 
communicate with both familiar and unfamiliar communication partners. The five participants 
posted responses for all 7 topics during the focus group. Upon reviewing the data, individual 
units of analysis were identified based on the smallest amount of information that could stand 
alone. Next, coding themes with corresponding operational definitions were developed post-hoc 
based on the discussion topics and participants' written responses. The six primary themes that 
emerged from the focus group data were, (a) types of recreational activities, (b) barriers, (c) 
supports, (d) benefits, (e) communication, and (f) recommendations. 
 
4. Discussion and Conclusions:  
This research is important for people who use AAC, their communication partners, speech-
language pathologists, and recreational professionals. Overall, the results from this study indicate 
that active recreation has strong value and is often a defining feature in the lives of people who 
use AAC. With greater awareness about active recreation, individuals who use AAC may 
increase participation and be interested in trying different types of activities available in their 
local and regional communities. Also, as a result of this research, communication partners will 
learn about the value of recreation for people who use AAC and what types of barriers exist. 
Findings from this study reveal that partners are critical supports who provide resources, 
transportation, and time to make recreational experiences happen. Lastly, outcomes from this 
study are important for recreational and related professionals as they work to improve and 
enhance adaptive sport programs by providing more focused communication training to staff and 
volunteers who support people who use AAC.

Physical Therapy Management of a Patient with Lumbar Spine and Psoas Sarcoidosis: A Case

ABSTRACT 
 
Background and Purpose: Sarcoidosis is a rare inflammatory condition characterized by 
granuloma formation throughout the body. Symptoms vary widely depending on organ system 
involvement which makes diagnosis and treatment of the condition difficult. There is no typical 
presentation, but many patients report fatigue as a result of the diagnosis. Non-organ 
involvement affects less than 5% of patients and there is sparse evidence to guide rehabilitation 
outside of pharmacologic treatment. The purpose of this case report is to describe physical 
therapy management of a patient with impairments secondary to Sarcoidosis with granulomas 
throughout the musculoskeletal system. 
 
Case Description: The patient was a 54-year-old male diagnosed with sarcoidosis in the lumbar 
spine and bilateral psoas muscles who presented to a private outpatient orthopedic physical 
therapy clinic. His symptoms date back approximately one year before the diagnosis was made 
after failed conservative medical management. Physical therapy care was delayed as result of 
the COVID-19 pandemic. At the time the patient complained primarily of lower back/bilateral 
hip pain, decreased strength, range of motion and flexibility in bilateral lower extremities, and 
decreased sensation at the ankle. These impairments impacted his sleep, stair negotiation, 
sitting, recreational activities such as running, and activities of daily living. Interventions 
primarily consisted of stretching, manual therapy, deep tissue massage, Instrument Assisted 
Soft Tissue Mobilization, progressive functional exercises, and patient education regarding 
symptom management strategies, as well as a comprehensive home exercise program. In 
addition, Medical Exercise Technique was also introduced early in the plan of care.  
 
Outcomes: Upon discharge, all short and long-term goals were met. The patient reported 
minimal continued activity limitations, aside from prolonged sitting, which the patient reported 
mild stiffness after 1 hour. The Oswestry Disability Index and Numeric Pain Rating Scale were 
used during the initial examination and were repeated upon discharge. The patient exceeded 
the MCID on both self-report outcomes measures, indicating that there was a clinically 
significant change in pain levels and low-back related disability. Strength and range of motion 
improved throughout both lower extremities, with only minimal improvements in flexibility 
since the start of care.  
 
Discussion: This case report serves to fill a gap in current research. Currently, the majority of 
research focuses on management of pulmonary Sarcoidosis, especially in management of 
fatigue. There is a small prevalence of Sarcoidosis seen in the musculoskeletal system, and very 
little research on how to treat the impairments that result from the diagnosis. This case serves 
as an example of atypical symptoms and a possible course of treatment. The patient’s 
symptoms responded well to addressing impairments and activity limitations, with a focus on 
decreasing pain before moving to more functional movements. This began by utilizing Medical 
Exercise Technique, which allowed the patient to see early benefits in range of motion with 
moderate pain reduction. Sarcoidosis often goes undiagnosed due to the variability in 
presentation, but once identified physical therapy intervention can help increase quality of life.
