The Story of Girls, and Others, Stories
No full textThreads of surrealism and speculation twine through the twelve short, fictional stories collected in Barbara Lock\u27s thesis. In Cooks and Delivery Men,: which was published in Superstition Review, three restaurant workers and their father imagine alternative lives while working through the COVID pandemic. In The Cyanotype, which was published in STORY, a stroll through an art museum triggers a woman\u27s false, constructed memories and hallucinations about her family. In The Story of Girls, a journalist who is faced with an unwanted pregnancy considers the services of a witch. In Paper Birds, an artist\u27s recollection of her first exposure to sexual desire reveals uncomfortable truths about her state of psychic unrest. Barbara Lock, MD, an emergency physician who teaches Narrative Medicine at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, has 14 published pieces as of April, 2022, across fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. Community and Connection in the Classroom
Get PDFConnection and community can motivate children and adults to come to the classroom. These relationships can enhance learning in a number of ways. Not only do they bring joy, but they help children feel safe and a sense of belonging helping create an environment that is conducive to learning. A strong teacher-student relationship encourages and fosters learning. This connection is weakened when teachers use punishments, rewards and labels such as troublemaker that isolate students from the community. Community and connection can be fostered through true listening, reflective literature, story acting, open-ended play, and sharing with the community during circle time. Community and connection are fostered when the whole child is accepted including the child’s culture, background and interests. When a supportive classroom is in place and strong teacher-student connections are made, a child’s learning benefits. The social nature of learning is evident when children benefit from Vygotsky’s zone of proximal development. Both peers and teachers can expand, enrich and stretch a child’s thinking in a classroom of strong connections and community. Connection and Community create a classroom where children feel safe and where they feel they belong
A Cultural Reckoning in the South Bronx and El Barrio: Intertwined Socio-Political Histories of Salsa and Hip Hop From Local Communities to National Expansion, 1960’s to Early 2000’s
Get PDFThis research explores the South Bronx and its immediate neighbors such as East Harlem, also known as El Barrio, between the nineteen-sixties and the early two-thousands for the intersections of Salsa and Hip Hop, not only as music genres and dance forms, but, as political movements calling to the socio-political climate of state neglect and abandonment of the residents. These neighborhoods are central to the origination of both Salsa and Hip Hop, and were shaped through the diversity of their inhabitants who embodied, celebrated, protested, and lifted their communities through engagement in these art forms. Tracing the intersections amplifies the connection between the two art forms, which in turn provides more clarity on the divergence in paths that each form has taken towards commercialization. Tracking the political economy of these two social dances can shed light on potential futures of these forms as they continue to push into the contemporary.
Extensive research on each dance form exists separately, but often the information about their origins is met with brevity or excluded altogether. I was unable to unearth detailed research that placed these two art forms in dialogue with one another or traced the intersections. Therefore, it is important to situate these dance styles from their place of origin in context to one another through the socio-political climate at their births. I compiled research from scholars that utilize (i) theory supported through the embodied practice methods employed by the dance practitioners, (ii) documentaries that include visual images and interviews with residents/dancers from these neighborhoods that further support the theory, and (iii) newspaper articles from the seventies and eighties that render the discourse at the time. All of this work is situated within and in dialogue with Cultural studies, Latina/o studies, and Black studies
A Taiwanese Perspective: Exploring the relationship Between Confucian Body Philosophy and Dance/Movement Therapy
Get PDFThis thesis explores the correspondence between dance/movement therapy and Confucian body philosophy. It is inspired by the author’s embodied experiences during her study in the field of dance/movement therapy in America while holding the identity as an international student who came from Taiwan. Because of the cultural differences, the author experienced a learning curve in understanding theories that are mostly developed in Western society. Through embodying foreign principles, the author pursues various perspectives in implementing American ideology while having a greater sense of her Taiwanese self. In these embodied experiences, three significant themes arise when paralleling Confucian body philosophy and dance/movement therapy theories. The body-heart/body-mind connection, the understanding of qi/energy, and the heart-qi-shape’s connection are highlighted in this thesis. Cultural differences can have the possibility to enrich the dance/movement therapy field, and discovering diverse cultural practices should be explored
A Sharp Increase In The Use Of PGT To Prevent Mendelian Disorders: A Review of Patient Data From 2004-2021 In A Single New York City Center For Reproductive Medicine
No full textPreimplantation genetic testing is a screening tool used by clinicians during in vitro fertilization to inform prospective parents about the genetic composition of their embryos prior to transfer selection. The development of PGT for monogenic disorders allows for the identification of embryos with or without specific genetic variants. This technology was originally used by known carriers or affected individuals at increased risk of having a child with a serious, childhood-onset disorder. The use of PGT-M has expanded to include cancer predisposition syndromes, cardiac disease, human leukocyte antigen matching, and hundreds of other inherited conditions or susceptibilities. Aside from a few anecdotal reports, there remains a lack in published evidence about the current use of PGT-M. Combining chart review and data from an internal database at a single, academic reproductive care center, we were able to identify trends in the use of PGT-M. Our study examined patient information from 1245 IVF cycles comprising 646 unique cases wherein PGT-M was performed from 2004 to 2021. Deidentified patient data allowed us to infer the reason for the use of PGT-M. In most instances, the data suggest that the growth of carrier screening and genetic testing have been likely drivers for the growth in use of PGT-M. From 2004 to 2021, use of PGT-M as a percentage of all IVF cycles increased from less than 1% to 7.44%. From 2014 to 2021, the practice saw a 295.65% increase in patients using PGT-M. This significant growth demonstrates how the practice and patient care has changed
The Role of High Throughput Functional Evidence In Reducing-Population Specific Differences In The Quality of Variant Interpretation
Get PDFVariants of uncertain significance (VUSs) in cancer pre-disposition genes are more frequent in non-White and/or Hispanic populations than non-Hispanic White (NHW), creating more ambiguity in cancer risk/management for these populations. High throughput functional evidence (HTFE) serves as a powerful classification tool for missense variants within the RING/BRCT domains of BRCA1. We sought to determine if HTFE provides preferential benefit in underrepresented racial and ethnic groups. Our cohort consisted of individuals who had BRCA1 testing and self-reported ancestry as Asian, Black, Hispanic, Middle Eastern, or NHW. For individuals with pathogenic, likely pathogenic, or VUS variants in the RING/BRCT domains, we evaluated the frequency at which HTFE was applied and at which HTFE impacted variant classification, and compared this between non-White and/or Hispanic individuals and NHW individuals using Fisher’s exact test. We found that while application of HTFE between non-White and/or Hispanic individuals (n=140; 64.81%) and NHW individuals (n=240; 69.36%) did not differ, non-White and/or Hispanic individuals (n=67; 31.02%) were more likely to have a variant upgraded due to HTFE than NHW (n=63; 18.21%) (OR=2.0; 95% CI: 1.4-3.0;
“Always a Friend” The Complex Life of Lady Gregory Aristocracy, Womanhood, and the Indigenous Irish
Get PDFLady Gregory was an important part of nineteenth and twentieth-century Irish History, but her name is not associated with it as much as her male counterparts. Being born into an Anglo-Irish family, Lady Gregory was awarded certain privileges throughout her life in colonial Ireland. After marrying her husband, Sir William Gregory, she was a part of an elite titled family that awarded her more status. Her family, both strict unionists and heavily Protestant, taught her that women should succumb to the patriarchal society that raised her and hold status over the indigenous Irish. Nonetheless she created her own ideologies becoming a middle person for both viewpoints of nationalism and unionism. She broke down the societal standards put in place for her as a Victorian woman to preserve the history and language of the indigenous Irish. In the beginning, I believed that this thesis would argue that Lady Gregory was the oppressor of the indigenous Irish and used her status to create a career off of their stories. However, throughout my research in reading her archived sources, I have changed my opinion of her. She understood her status as an elite woman in Ireland but used her privileges to award those who were less fortunate. She used her status and power to help more than oppress. Lady Gregory created a career for herself after her husband’s death and established the Abbey Theatre in Ireland to uphold Irish playwrights. My thesis argues that the lack of women historians around the time of her death and the new Irish Republic became why she has not kept her popularity in modern historical narrative
A Call For Strength-Based Teaching
Get PDFTeaching practices centering a deficit lens of the child do not provide the space needed for every child to thrive in the American public education system today. This is why I call for strength-based teaching. A strength-based approach to teaching calls for the decentering of deficits and the centering of strengths, knowing our students, the room to make mistakes, freedom from labeling, acceptance and value of all student differences while simultaneously honoring all student knowledge as official knowledge, and the centering of marginalized voices. Our school system today relies primarily on state standards and standardized testing to measure intelligence, forcing our students and teachers to learn and teach towards what a small group of people at the top of the totem pole have deemed official knowledge. This kind of practice teaches our student body what knowledge is valuable in society. By centering student strengths in the classroom we value them as individuals rather than humans to be filled with information that they are missing or don’t know; therefore they can build upon the knowledge they already possess. Strength-based teaching values every student and places emphasis on their right to succeed
