The Effects of One-on-One Interventions on Kindergarten Students.
Get PDFThis 2023 study focuses on the impact that one-on-one interventions have on the academic achievement of kindergarten students. My focus is on whether one-on-one interventions play a significant role in the outcome of student scores on trimester achievement assessments, or if one-on-one interventions do not show success in student progress. Students will be assessed daily for 20 days on interventions in areas they are struggling with. The research took place in a Minnesota school, specifically five Kindergarten students who are in the same classroom. The data and results will follow
An Examination of Death in Premier Counseling Journals
Get PDFThis qualitative content analysis (QCA) examined five premier counseling journals and their coverage of death related issues from 1986-2022: Journal of Counseling and Development (JCD), Journal of Humanistic Counseling (JHC), Journal of Multicultural Counseling and Development (JMCD), Counselor Education and Supervision (CES) and Counseling and Values (CV). Of the 6180 journal articles published across all five journals, 62 articles covered death related topics. Eight major death related themes emerged through the QCA process and included: Research on Death-Related Issues, Personal Reflection and Poetry, Grief and Loss Education, Book Reviews, Responding to Campus Death, Providing Grief Counseling, DSM and Bereavement Diagnosis and Counseling the Dying. Special attention was also given to analyzing how the five journals covered death related issues from a multicultural perspective. Results indicated that minimal attention has been paid to death related issues in the field of counseling. Death will touch 100% of all people and yet it was only covered one percent of the time in the five counseling journals analyzed for this study. The results of this study clearly demonstrate an extreme neglect of publishing about death. There is an urgent need to begin and expand a robust research agenda which will help counselors, counselor educators, counselor trainees and most importantly the clients that seek counseling services

When looking at the mentoring program the research has shown a decline in teachers leaving the teaching field when they have a mentor for one to two years. States have started implementing their own mentoring programs with different requirements. There is not a standard set of requirements that multiple states have adopted. There is not law requiring first-year teachers to have mentoring. Research however has been inconclusive on the exact patterns that have been the underlying predictor of the program’s success. They have some overarching themes that come out on top during the program that have been documented and data collected on their benefit

Listening comprehension is a vital component in reading comprehension. This allows students to absorb information and vocabulary necessary to better comprehend a text. This method of instruction can potentially be an effective way for teachers to improve reading comprehension in secondary students
The Effectiveness of the Unstuck & On Target Curriculum on Students Diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder
No full textThis project explored the effects of the Unstuck & On Target Curriculum on a 6th-grade student with Autism Spectrum Disorder. The student was selected for this curriculum because of Panorama Data survey data showing weaknesses in Social-Emotional Skills and was also referred by his case manager due to concerns with executive functioning skills. Executive functioning skills are a deficit that most children with Autism Spectrum Disorder experience. Executive functioning deficits can hinder learning, and impact the school environment, peer relationships, and adaptability (Anthony et al., 2020). The student received Unstuck & On Target intervention twice weekly for 30-40 minutes. The student\u27s progress was monitored weekly using a Panorama survey that focused on Social Emotional and Executive Functioning skills. The current study showed some positive effects and growth in areas of social emotional and executive functioning skills, and qualitatively the case manager saw a difference in executive functioning skills within the classroom. She saw an increase in flexibility, adaptability in transitions, ability to self-regulate and pinpoint emotion, and organization. Therefore, this study supports the use of Unstuck & On Target as an effective intervention for middle school children with Autism spectrum disorder
Implementation of Equine Therapy into Treatment Programming for Adolescents with Substance Use Disorders
Get PDFSubstance use disorders affect all populations. Adolescents are at greater risk of a substance use disorder when abuse begins at a young age. Over 50% of individuals with mental health diagnoses developed a substance use disorder before the age of 14 (Nebhinani et. al., 2022). [BJA1] Due to the tremendous growth that takes place during adolescence, and the profound impact substance use can have on development, it is imperative to provide early intervention. There are several evidenced-based approaches available in the treatment of adolescent substance use. Equine therapy has growing empirical support and will be the focus of this project. The literature was utilized to develop a group manual that utilizes of equine therapy with adolescents who have substance use disorders.

Measuring Perceived Stress Levels and Adaptive Coping Strategies in Undergraduate College Students: A Quasi-Experimental Study
Get PDFThis study aimed to analyze changes in perceived stress and physiological variables in undergraduate students and identify preferred adaptive coping strategies utilized over one semester. Additionally, the study aimed to assess the impact of demographic factors on the students\u27 perception of stress. A quasi-experimental study was conducted using non-random convenience sampling with 30 undergraduate students enrolled in an Introduction to Stress Management class at a small, regional institution in the upper Midwest in the fall of 2022.
Data collection included the use of the Perceived Stress Scale (i.e., PSS-10), stress physiological variables (e.g., heart rate), demographic characteristics (e.g., sex, relationship status), and usage of coping strategies (e.g., mindfulness, yoga, progressive muscle relaxation, power napping). Participants were surveyed three times using pre-, mid-, and post-treatment assessments. Both descriptive statistics and the Wilcoxon-signed rank test were used to address the study\u27s research questions and null hypothesis. The findings showed a statistically significant difference (p \u3c .05) from pre- to post-treatment assessments in total stress scores (i.e., PSS-10, physiological variables), suggesting that coping strategies were effective. The findings did not indicate a significant decrease in PSS-10 scores from pre- to post-treatment. Data showed that undergraduate college students preferred power napping and social support, and sex accounted for some important differences. Students reported being moderately stressed, more so in their second year. Implementing adaptive coping strategies can effectively decrease perceived stress as well as the physiological manifestation of stress through academic classes or programs available to students through campus
A QUALITATIVE APPROACH EXAMINING THE EFFECTS OF UNIVERSAL DESIGN FOR LEARNING FOR STUDENTS WITH INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES IN KENYA
Get PDFThis research aims to explore the Universal Design for Learning framework looking at multiple means of representation, multiple means of expression, and multiple means of engagement and how it can support students with intellectual disabilities within the country of Kenya. Using the Structural-Functional theory, this collective case study was designed to look at schools located throughout Kenya putting an emphasis on adaptations to an environment, integration into the community, and shared values and beliefs focused on student education. Three sub-questions will be used to support data analysis focused on the pillars of Universal Design for Learning. How does the Universal Design for Learning framework support student engagement in Kenya? How does the Universal Design for Learning framework specific to multiple means of representation support students in Kenya? How does the Universals Design for Learning framework specific to multiple means of expression and action support students in Kenya? Pseudonyms were used to protect the identity of participants in the data collection and semi-formal interviews. Six schools along with one teacher from each school were used to support this research. The findings of this study provided insight into education materials, teaching methods, classroom structure, technology, and accommodations provided to students with intellectual disabilities within Kenya. The information gained can be shared with active teachers within the United States of America who are teaching foreign-born students from Kenya to better support the transition to America and have a base understanding of the student’s prior educational experiences
