Overcoming Language Barriers with Parents of English Learners
The purpose of this literature review was to determine the most effective ways to build relationships with parents of English Language Learner (ELL) students and how to overcome the language barrier when creating these relationships. A literature review was done to answer the following research questions: In what ways can English Language teachers build relationships with parents of English Learners? How can the language barrier be overcome between educators and English Language Learner’s families? The results were used to create a presentation to inform other educators what was learned. The presentation provides explanatory information about initiating effective communication using translators and recruiting ELL parents into the school to provide support and ways to support their child in academics
Assistive Technology- Consideration, Consultation, Collaboration
Abstract:
Collaboration has a variety of different words like team work, partnership, joint effort, and participation. Collaboration is the action of working with others to produce, create, or support something. Collaboration takes diligence and experience, it does not just occur (Dillon et al., 2021). Going beyond the required routine at an Individualized Education Program (IEP) meeting is only scratching the surface of what effective collaboration could or should be. From the gathered information, collaboration is important because it promotes a team to work together and provide the student with efficient and effective instruction resulting in higher student achievement. The idea of changing or implementing different strategies or tools based on student needs can be difficult, daunting and overwhelming. By collaborating educators start opening their mind to seeing the bigger picture. When collaboration has been done successfully teachers become empowered and are more willing and eager to continue to be collaborative. Having positive school and teacher characteristics likely influences the way teachers interact with each other. This project focuses on the characteristics, challenges, and strategies when collaborating in education. This project was achieved through the development of a website that focuses on information and resources that are geared towards the considerations and consultation of assistive technology. The collaboration portion of this project was to gain knowledge on how to successfully implement collaboration with a variety of other educators and families in regards to implementing assistive technology into the classrooms for students to be successful with an array of different skills
Nature-Based Group Therapy for Women Living with Depression Through a Narrative Lens
The field of nature-based therapy treatment is rapidly expanding. With an emphasis on healing the disconnectedness of the modern world through experiencing interconnectedness with the natural world, this modality is particularly useful in treating symptoms of social isolation and hopelessness within populations living with major depressive disorder. The literature highlights emotional and biological benefits of mental health counseling in a natural setting with key therapeutic factors. Researchers highlighted these factors as the natural environment itself, the element of challenge, nature as a third-party influence on therapeutic relationship, and expansiveness and interconnectedness of the natural world (Naor & Mayseless, 2021). Within nature-based therapy, or ecotherapy, these factors may not provide a clear, linear treatment plan for specific diagnoses. This group manual was developed to provide members with these therapeutic factors while incorporating a narrative modality for a more structured approach to treating depression. Group members will re-story limiting beliefs through overcoming challenges in nature, finding a sense of shared belonging, and dissecting “problem-saturated” stories they may live by
BEGINNING SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHERS’ PERCEPTIONS OF IMPACTFUL SELF-RESILIENCY SKILLS: A QUALITATIVE STUDY
Special educators are in high demand and greatly needed to meet the growing population of special education in public schools today. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to gain an understanding of how beginning special educators lived experiences and utilized their self-resilience skills which impacted their retention in the field of special education. With an increasing rate of attrition in the field of special education, exploring self-resilience factors that impact the retention of beginning special educators was imperative to understanding how to best support these early career educators. The increasing demands and pressures that beginning special educators are required to navigate need to be examined and addressed to ensure support and guidance are in place within the district and building levels in public schools. In order to understand how the phenomenon was experienced by beginning special educators, the researchers conducted focus groups. Participants in the focus groups reflected on and defined their experiences as beginning special educators. The essence of the impact of self-resilience in the study was found through the beginning special educator’s ability to recognize student needs and their ability to affect change through supported internal and external environments

The College Search Process of Rural, First-Generation Students
First-generation college students (FGCS) continue to be one of the largest growing groups of students across higher education. Being a FGCS comes with a unique set of challenges when facing the choice of a college or university. This research aims to identify barriers that FGCS face in the college search process to provide student support professionals with information and recommendations on how to effectively support FGCS in the college search process. Previous research has often focused on the matriculation, retention, and graduation of FGCS. It is important to understand how FGCS select an institution of higher education to improve retention and graduation rates by providing a more supportive and effective college search process, allowing students to feel fully connected and fit to their institution
The Effects of Goal Setting Practices on Performance Motivation in a Personalized Competency Based Education Learning Model
Personalized competency-based education (PCBE) is a new initiative being pushed in school districts. One main concern held by educators is the student apathy towards learning and how this model helps these learners. When students are given choice and flexibility with their learning, which is the main idea of PCBE, one would expect these students to be fairly engaged in their learning. Another pillar of PCBE is goal setting and reflection practices. It has been found that these practices can further boost student engagement in their learning. This study will look at how goal setting practices affect student engagement in a PCBE classroom.
Participants of the study will be from a 6th grade science classroom in a public middle school. Each of the students will be asked to go through trial periods of differing frequencies of goal setting. Those trial periods involve a time with no goal setting, daily goal setting, weekly, and then a combination form of goal setting. All students will be asked to reflect on how engaged they thought they were for that day’s class period using a Likert Scale survey based off of the Leaner Engagement Spectrum. The teacher will also be recording their observations of student engagement in their classroom. The means of each trial period will be determined and compared amongst themselves to see which frequency resulted in higher student engagement in learning
The Impact of Utilizing Non-Permanent Workspaces as a Formative Assessment Tool on Students’ Outcomes and Attitudes Towards Mathematics in a Middle School Math Classroom
The present study investigated the effectiveness of utilizing non-permanent workspaces as formative assessment tools for middle school mathematics students in regards to their academic performance and feelings or attitudes towards mathematics. The researcher took two sections of eight grade basic algebra students, and implemented the practice of utilizing non-permanent workspaces as formative assessment tools with one section, and similar formative assessment strategies with the other section of students, but without the non-permanent workspaces. The participants from both sections took a pretest and post-test to determine the academic effectiveness of implementing the non-permanent workspaces. The participants from both sections also completed an attitude survey in regards to their attitudes and feelings towards mathematics after being taught either with or without the non-permanent workspaces
