Understanding the Relationship Between Fidgeting, Academic Performance, and Peer Distractibility
Get PDFSchools have dealt with an abundance of behavioral issues in the classroom. These behaviors are often off-task and are commonly judged as distracting, negatively impacting the class’s academic performance. The perception of teachers and staff commonly determines the connection between these off-task behaviors and distractibility. However, there is limited direct research into the notion fidgeting causes others to be distracted. The limited research found students self-reported feeling distracted by external stimuli, but did not directly affect academic performance (Massonnié et al., 2022; Phillips et al., 2016). This study was designed to determine the direct impact of fidgeting on peers’ distractibility through fidgeting\u27s effect on the environment. Multiple fidgeting behaviors were utilized to determine how various environmental impacts (auditory and visual) impacted participants during two academic tasks. However, the results showed mixed support for the predictions. There was no significant effect of fidgeting on observed distractibility or academic performance. However, the fidgeting behavior did show to impact self-ratings of distractibility, and there was some support for the prediction that more stimulating fidgeting behavior is perceived to be more distracting
Mentor Training Curriculum for Mentor Programs within K-12 Public School Systems
Get PDFTo address the issue of school failure, many communities have implemented mentor programs to encourage youth academics and social growth. However, excellent mentor candidates are often hard to find and schedule. Implementing near peer mentor programs within K-12 public school systems could give the same benefits as adult mentor programs with more accessibility and mutual benefits to each party including boosted attendance, academic success, college and career readiness skills, improved social skills, and enhanced emotional well-being. Along with mutual benefits there are also qualities which make some mentors and mentor programs more successful than others including proper training and goal setting. There are several traits found in highly effective mentors that should be considered in a mentor training curriculum including effective communication, active listening, empathy, conflict resolution, collaboration, adaptability, and cultural competence. Additional to content, the delivery methods and format of a curriculum should be considered including feedback, role-playing, small group discussions, and several forms of evaluation. Although there are several hypotheses about in-person versus online learning, further research should be conducted to determine last effects, leaving both modalities to have separate strengths. Further research should also be completed to analyze the effectiveness of high school students participating as mentors in lieu of adults. The mentor training curriculum combines the highly effective skills and formats of delivery to create seven focused training lessons and evaluation forms for high school mentors.

Reduction Of E-Waste With Multi Generational Clustering Of Obsolete Computers
No full textThe rise of E-waste is a growing concern as there are many toxic materials or toxic chemicals created with mishandling of the waste. Even in the school system we see obsolete computers systems laying around in closets collecting dust ready to be sent to the landfill. Our aim is to see if by clustering these old systems together we can give them new life thus reducing the need to add them to the worlds e-waste problem. Often these obsolete systems have lower powered CPUs which makes them less desirable for computing, if we cluster these systems together we can potentially use one system as a controller and borrow the other systems CPUs to raise the efficacy to a reasonable level. If this is a plausible route it could lead to a new way to reuse obsolete systems in research that requires a lot of computational power in data crunching. Our process will be to create a cluster on modern Virtual Machines to test our code and load balancing and then transfer that to the old systems. With utilizing a VM cluster we can benchmark a more modern cluster vs the obsolete computer cluster to see if where it stands. Barriers we will most likely face are utilizing newer operating systems on obsolete hardware and networking issues while connecting our cluster together
“We’ll Never Be Those Kids Again” A Thematic Analysis of Reddit.com
No full textThe dependency on substances can take a toll on an individual\u27s life. Different factors may have led to their use of substances, which can turn into the abuse of substances. This study takes a deep dive into the events that happened in the past that led to dependency. I collected the data from Reddit.com under the r/addiction community, where individuals were vulnerable about their pain in life. The individuals shared stories that explained how they got to the point of substance abuse. Five emerging themes occurred through the evaluation of reddit.com and how individuals explain what led to substance abuse. The five emerging themes were 1. abuse, 2. mental health, 3. self-medication, 4. seeking acceptance, and 5. recreational/just because. Sexual and physical abuse that stemmed from childhood played an influence on self-medication through substances. The neglect from their parents while growing up into young adults led to a disconnect in society
Understanding Practitioner’s Perceptions of Speech and Language Therapy Services in the Juvenile Justice System
No full textThe purpose of this study was to gain more understanding of how individuals who work with the juvenile justice population understand language disorders and the scope of speech and language therapy services. In addition, this study explored potential supports for individuals working in this setting. This study consisted of twenty participants working in the juvenile justice system who completed a survey tool that was designed by the researcher to describe the participant\u27s perceptions of speech-language pathology, current procedures, reported challenges, and potential areas in need of support. Participant knowledge of the scope of speech-language pathology varied among participants. The highest reported challenge among participants was youth behavior. The majority of participants believe that social skills and language skills can impact behavior. Ninety percent of the participants indicated a willingness to receive training on communication strategies. The findings of this study suggest that there is a willingness among individuals who work in the juvenile justice setting to receive education on language disorders and communication strategies. The results of this study indicate a need for increased advocacy and awareness in the field of speech-language pathology to increase the population\u27s understanding of speech-language services in the juvenile justice setting
Anxious, Avoidant, and Biased?: Does attachment to a mother figure predict ambivalent sexism?
No full textPast studies have indicated the connection between attachment style and sexist attitudes, but not many have covered how attachment style to one\u27s caregiver could impact the perception of sexism. The current study explored the influence of childhood attachment style on the formation of sexist attitudes among college students. 92 Minnesota State University Moorhead undergraduate students from psychology classes participated in this study. The Adult Scale of Parent Attachment - Short Form (ASPA-SF) and the Relationship Structures Questionnaire (ECR-RS) were used to determine participants\u27 attachment styles towards their caregivers growing up. Participants also completed the Ambivalent Sexism Inventory to predict their hostile and benevolent sexism beliefs. Results showed people who have an anxious attachment style for their caregiver during childhood are likely to hold both benevolent and hostile sexist attitudes. Furthermore, avoidant attachment style predicts endorsement of benevolent, but not hostile, sexism

The goal of the project was to create a website that is both user-friendly, convenient, and both personally and professionally useful. The project began with an analysis of existing personal inventory websites and apps which identified many different aspects that are included in the finished website, as well as aspects that fell short. Utilizing Python and Flask, the design includes a number of easy-to-use features, such as the ability to create an account to save a personal library and the ability to use the search engine by manually typing or using a barcode scanner. Through this project, users can expect enhanced organization, tracking, and accessibility of their media collections, promising an enjoyable experience for both casual and avid collectors alike

An Overview of the Behaviors that Can Occur for Special Education Teachers and Speech-Language Pathologists in the Absence of Communication Devices to Assist Students with Developmental Disabilities
Get PDFThe purpose of this project was to research communication devices used in unique education settings with students with developmental disabilities, how the devices were accessed, and the benefits of these devices, as noted by the special education teachers and speech-language pathologists who worked with the students with developmental disabilities.The use of iPads in educational settings has proven particularly beneficial for teachers and students with developmental disabilities, especially those requiring alternative augmented and alternative communication (AAC) methods. According to Davidovich and Yavich (2019), these devices facilitate communication between teachers and students, fostering a more interactive and engaging learning environment.
By incorporating iPads into their educational practices, educators can leverage various apps and tools designed to enhance communication skills, as well as to support the development of reading, writing, and math abilities. The user-friendly interface and accessibility features of the iPad make it an ideal resource for students who may struggle with traditional forms of communication. Additionally, the visual and interactive nature of the content available on iPads helps to keep students motivated and involved in their learning process, ultimately leading to improved educational outcomes.
Devices such as laptops, tablets, and smartphones facilitate access to digital resources, enable personalized learning, and support communication through educational platforms.
Additionally, the integration of communication devices aids in the development of 21st-century skills, such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and digital literacy. These tools can also help bridge the gap for students who may have barriers to traditional learning methods, providing alternative avenues for engagement and expression. Furthermore, effective training and support for both educators and students are essential to leverage these technologies, ensuring that they are used responsibly and productively within the learning environment.
A survey inquiring about the use of communication devices was sent to speech-language pathologists and special education teachers in K-12 schools in southern Minnesota. The study was analyzed by a computer program. Graduates studying at MSU Moorhead at both two- and four-year colleges and universities may participate in the HEDS Student Satisfaction Survey. It inquires as to the level of contentment your students feel with their academic experiences, course teaching, campus life, and campus services and amenities, and students then can make a survey themselves, which is what happened with this project, and those findings indicate that more intervention options are available for special education teachers and SLPs. Based on the study results, suggestions for special education teachers and speech-language pathologists for the introduction of communication devices for students and collaboration with general education teachers were highlighted.
