    Premarital Counseling and Education Group

    Get PDF
Relationship education programs were developed in the 1970s (Markman et al., 2013). Relationships and marriage require continual self-growth, learning opportunities, and partnership. This literature review discusses current marriage and divorce rates, approaches used in marriage counseling, effectiveness and limitations of premarital counseling, and techniques used during group counseling programs. Also included is an overview of a premarital psychoeducational and skills couples group along with the weekly sessions laid out with objectives, discussion topics, group and partner exercises, and handouts. The information utilized in the premarital couples group is derived from John and Julie Gottman’s Sound Relationship House Theory, as well as interventions based on CBT, Narrative Therapy, EFT approaches and ideas from PREPARE/ENRICH. The Relationship Assessment Scale (RAS) will be administered as a pre and post program evaluation to assess the effectiveness of the premarital couples psychoeducation and skills group

    Analysis of Self

    Get PDF
Abstract Self-analysis is an opportunity to reflect, consult with others, research how the threads of our lives are woven into collective experiences, and to challenge our own patterns of thinking and behavior. My intention for this project is to illustrate how both my personal and professional life have evolved using self-reflection, tools such as the Myer Briggs Type Indicator and Strong Interest Inventory, and interviews with my friends and family. I discuss the impact that existential theory, feminist theory, and Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory of cognitive development have had on my past and why I desire to incorporate the principes of each into my future work. The information gathered by the forementioned methods aided in developing my future goals as an individual and as a professional in the counseling field. Trust Judgements of Facial Stimuli

Professional counselors and clients who meet in healthcare facilities may be required to wear masks if COVID community transmission levels are high ([CDC], 2022). The current 4-part study examines how masking may affect therapeutic alliances via judgements of trust formed during first impressions. A 2(trustworthiness) x 5(facial feature visibility) within-subjects factorial design was used to assess one implicit measure of pleasantness using an Affect Misattribution Procedure as well as explicit facial judgements of valence, dominance, and trustworthiness (Payne & Lundberg, 2014). Using E-prime, undergraduate psychology students responded to faces previously rated as high or low in trustworthiness in all parts (Ma et al., 2015). Both the direction and the speed of all judgements were recorded. It was predicted that implicit and explicit evaluations of masked and occluded low-trust target images would be more positive and slower than explicit evaluations of fully visible low-trust images (Oliveira & Garcia-Marques, 2022). While main effects for trustworthiness were found in ratings from every part, main effects of visibility were not. Interactions were found between trustworthiness and visibility, but primarily among ratings of the high-trust targets. In general, ratings were highest when all features of target faces were fully visible and lowest when only the bottom half of the faces were visible. Possible clinical implications of masking on first impressions are discussed. Keywords: Trust, Mask, Facial Features, First Impression

    Teacher-Paraprofessional Collaboration in Special Education

Teacher-Paraprofessional Collaboration in Special Education Effective collaboration between teachers and paraprofessionals is an important factor when working with students with special needs as it leads to more extensive and effective support, improving both academic achievement and personal development of students. Cipriano, Barnes, Bertoli, Flynn, & Rivers (2016) studied the overall quality and nature of collaboration through the interactions between teachers and paraprofessionals in multiple self-contained classrooms during academic and planning times. They found the foundation for effective collaboration is in mutual respect, shared responsibilities and ongoing feedback. In addition, Irvin, Ingram, Huffman, Mason, & Wills (2018) highlighted a variety of classroom factors and expectations, such as creating strong professional relationships, using collaborative strategies, and providing training and support to both teachers and professionals, that can brace the foundation and result in student success. As former paraprofessionals and current special education teachers the literature rang true. For our capstone project, we created a handbook based on our experiences and combined it with information from our research. At the beginning of each academic year paraprofessionals will receive a digital copy of the handbook to allow them to access the provided links to resources, professional development, and district information according to the building they work

The Importance of Adopting a Neurodiversity Affirming Approach: A Training for School Counselors

    Get PDF
Consisting of a literature review and a training presentation, this project investigates the concerning mental health crisis affecting the autistic community and educates school counselors on how to shift to a neurodiversity-affirming approach to better support student needs. Research shows that autistic individuals subjected to applied behavioral analysis (ABA), social skills training (SST), and other behaviorist treatments experience significantly poorer mental and physical health outcomes as well as lower quality of life, indicating a critical need for change (Aral et al, 2023; Cassidy et al, 2020; Stewart et al, 2023). Supported by modern research, a neurodiversity-affirming approach is a better path forward to helping autistic students thrive. Neurodiversity refers to the natural neurological differences and variations in the brain, including but not limited to autism. Adopting a neurodiversity-affirming approach as a school counselor means accepting the naturally occurring neurological and social differences of autistic individuals, and refraining from treating normal autistic traits as deficits (Kuzniar, 2024)

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to gain more understanding of how individuals who work with the juvenile justice population understand language disorders and the scope of speech and language therapy services. In addition, this study explored potential supports for individuals working in this setting. This study consisted of twenty participants working in the juvenile justice system who completed a survey tool that was designed by the researcher to describe the participant\u27s perceptions of speech-language pathology, current procedures, reported challenges, and potential areas in need of support. Participant knowledge of the scope of speech-language pathology varied among participants. The highest reported challenge among participants was youth behavior. The majority of participants believe that social skills and language skills can impact behavior. Ninety percent of the participants indicated a willingness to receive training on communication strategies. The findings of this study suggest that there is a willingness among individuals who work in the juvenile justice setting to receive education on language disorders and communication strategies. The results of this study indicate a need for increased advocacy and awareness in the field of speech-language pathology to increase the population’s understanding of speech-language services in the juvenile justice setting
