No full textHotspot Analysis of Unregistered Voters in Columbus, Georgia
Get PDFDr. Jordan Brasher created this map in partnership with the New Georgia Project (NGP) during the November 2020 election cycle. NGP is a nonprofit, nonpartisan voter education, registration, and advocacy organization. Dr. Brasher used address data provided by NGP to map hotspots of densely clustered address points representing households with one or more suspected unregistered voters. Red hotspots on the map represent statistically significant spatial clusters of suspected unregistered voters; blue coldspots represent places where the address data are more spread out (i.e., a lack of spatial clustering). Notable hotspots include downtown Columbus and several areas south and east of Macon Road. Once hotspots of suspected unregistered voters were identified (using the Getis-Ord* method in ArcGIS Pro), Dr. Brasher created neighborhood-scale maps of hotspot areas that canvassers used to maximize contact with suspected unregistered voters with hopes of getting them registered to vote the January 2021 Senate runoff -- an election that saw an historic voter turnout that more than doubled the previous record (set in 2008) for voter turnout in a runoff election
Fountain of Legacies
No full textWe located our memorial design in Savannah, Georgia on the Rousakis Riverfront Plaza, a place where many slaves were once delivered. We want to put a water fountain in the center of the Plaza, and inside the fountain will be two replicas of the slave ships, one for each side of the fountain. In addition to the fountain, we will also place four informational posts around the memorial. On each post there will be a list of all 115 ships that transported slaves to Savannah. It will include the names of the ships and the number of slaves aboard. The fountain is a simpler memorial, but it still speaks volumes. The fountain brings attention to the informational posts that help illustrate how major the transatlantic slave trade was, even in smaller areas.https://csuepress.columbusstate.edu/historyfrombelow/1024/thumbnail.jp
Globe of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade
No full textEssentially, what we were thinking is to suspend a globe and have inscriptions of slave ships going to and from in the Transatlantic Slave Trade written in the margins of the sea. Even though there are no official records of the names of enslaved individuals, the next best thing is the name of the ships they were transported on. Improving Energy-Efficiency through Smart Data Placement in Hadoop Clusters
Get PDFHadoop, a pioneering open source framework, has revolutionized the big data world because of its ability to process vast amounts of unstructured and semi-structured data. This ability makes Hadoop the ‘go-to’ technology for many industries that generate big data, thus it also aids in being cost effective, unlike other legacy systems. Hadoop MapReduce is used in large scale data parallel applications to process massive amounts of data across a cluster and is used for scheduling, processing, and executing jobs. Basically, MapReduce is the right hand of Hadoop, as its library is needed to process these large data sets. In this research thesis, this study proposes a smart framework model that profiles MapReduce tasks with the use of Machine Learning (ML) algorithms to effectively place the data in Hadoop clusters; activate only sufficient number of nodes to accomplish the data processing within the planned deadline time for the task. The model will ensure achieving energy efficiency by utilizing the minimum number of necessary nodes, with maximum utilization and least energy consumption to reduce the overall cost of operations in data centers that deploy the Hadoop clusters
Strange Fruit
No full textOur group will place our monument on the corner of 11th Street and Broadway located in Columbus, Georgia. Today, this is home to a growing city. There are restaurants, clothing shops, and the downtown campus of a local college nearby.
However, historically, this location was the site of two murders of Africans. The two men, Jesse Slayton and Will Miles, were hung upon a tree by an angry mob. They were then left to rot. This was a continuation of dehumanization of Blacks in the south from the transatlantic slave trade in which nearly nine million Africans were taken from their homes. Of that, 305,300 were brought to the United States.

Freedom Angel Memorial
No full textFor our project, we decided to memorialize the trans-Atlantic slave trade in Columbus, Georgia. At the intersection of 11th Street and Broadway, an infamous tree was uprooted. With our research, we found that adult males were dominant on these slaves ships so diving into this, we decided to design a plaque wrapped with chain with a praying angel mounted on top to symbolize the hanging of two enslaved male Africans that occurred in this city. At night, the plaque will begin to glow (yellowish/gold) and the chain will seem like it is in the process of breaking (white light/dim), to signify freedom. A brick pathway that has lights leads to the plaque so that people can learn more; with the fountain on the other side so they can sit and reflect on the city\u27s past events.https://csuepress.columbusstate.edu/historyfrombelow/1032/thumbnail.jp
