Who revolts? Income, political freedom and the Egyptian revolution

© 2020, Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature. This study addresses the question: who is likely to participate in a public revolt against autocratic governments? In doing so, it asserts that a greater emancipative value, primarily, as well as a greater importance placed on politics and living of democracy will drive an individual to participate in a revolution. To evaluate this assertion, we explore the connection between an individual’s income level and his or her desire for political freedom in the context of the Arab Spring in Egypt that ousted an autocratic regime. Based on cross-sectional data taken from the fifth wave of the world values survey in 2008, one that employs a nationally representative sample of 3051 respondents from Egypt, we find that high-income individuals are more likely than are middle- and low-income individuals to report higher emancipative values and empowerment to participate in a revolution. This result supports the public choice view that revolutions are motivated by private expected utility and benefits-costs calculus

Using a Literacy Based Behavioral Intervention to Teach College Students with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities to Request a Classroom Accommodation

© The Author(s) 2020. Many individuals with an intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) are attending postsecondary education programs, yet they are not always proficient in using self-advocacy skills, such as requesting an academic accommodation. Access to these accommodations is vital for success in the postsecondary settings. Literacy based behavioral interventions (LBBIs) use a combination of print, visuals, and rehearsal and are an effective tool for teaching a range of skills including job skills to this population, but have not been investigated with a self-advocacy skill. In this study, a pre-service teacher was taught to deliver an LBBI to postsecondary students with IDD so they would learn to request and use a free online tool to record class lectures. Results showed that students were able to master the skill with the pre-service teacher delivered LBBI and maintain the skill after removal of the LBBI

An approach for evolving transformation sequences using hybrid genetic algorithms

    No full text
© 2020 The Authors. The digital transformation revolution has been crawling toward almost all aspects of our lives. One form of the digital transformation revolution appears in the transformation of our routine everyday tasks into computer executable programs in the form of web, desktop and mobile applications. The vast field of software engineering that has witnessed a significant progress in the past years is responsible for this form of digital transformation. Software development as well as other branches of software engineering has been affected by this progress. Developing applications that run on top of mobile devices requires the software developer to consider the limited resources of these devices, which on one side give them their mobile advantages, however, on the other side, if an application is developed without the consideration of these limited resources then the mobile application will neither work properly nor allow the device to run smoothly. In this paper, we introduce a hybrid approach for program optimization. It succeeded in optimizing the search process for the optimal program transformation sequence that targets a specific optimization goal. In this research we targeted the program size, to reach the lowest possible decline rate of the number of Lines of Code (LoC) of a targeted program. The experimental results from applying the hybrid approach on synthetic program transformation problems show a significant improve in the optimized output on which the hybrid approach achieved an LoC decline rate of 50.51% over the application of basic genetic algorithm only where 17.34% LoC decline rate was reached
