“They Know Too Much Already:” Black Education in Post-Emancipation Era Columbus, GA, 1866-1876
Get PDFDespite local histories that have been published on the history of Columbus, Georgia, and its school system, very little has been written about Columbus’s freedmen schools created after the U.S. Civil War. As a result, a comprehensive history of Columbus’s freedmen does not exist, and those written are fragmented. The focus of this study is to document the beginnings of Columbus’s freedmen school efforts in the post-emancipation era, through those African Americans’ own historical voices and experiences. Though an analysis of archived unpublished letters, local and religious newspapers, census data, government documents, and meeting minutes, this study recovers the authentic perspective of Columbus’s freedmen as they embarked upon securing an education as well as exploring the limits of their freedom. This study is part of both the historiography of black education and of African Americans in the immediate post-Civil War Era

Knowledge, Trait Mindfulness and Perceived Discrimination as it Relates to Coping Self-Efficacy in African American Women
Get PDFThis is a cross-sectional study that investigated the relationship between preconception care knowledge, trait mindfulness, perceived discrimination, and coping self-efficacy. It addressed the lack of research into the effects of pregnancy-related distress on maternal mortality in African American women. There were 117 participants ages 18 -30 whose data was collected through an online survey. The results suggest that greater preconception care knowledge predicts greater pregnancy-related distress coping self-efficacy. Trait mindfulness also predicted pregnancy-related distress coping self-efficacy. Perceived discrimination did not predict coping self- efficacy in a negative direction as expected
Three Captives Memorial at the Porte du Non Retour in Ghana
No full textWe chose our memorial to be in Ouidah, Ghana. It\u27s important because of its history of supplying the new world with African labor, with an estimated 673,759 enslaved Africans disembarking from the Gold Coast. More specifically, it is going to be at the Porte du Non Retour. The beaches of the port are where many Africans had their journey before embarking onto the ships that sent them away. It was the last bit of Africa that they would see before boarding the slave ships. The Porte du Non Retour, or Door of Not Return, is a gateway symbolizing when slaves would walk away from their homeland and never see it again. The memorial would be near this because it shows the conditions that a slave went through during their journey and what they were put through. A common slave route left from the town of Ouidah and went straight to the Porte du Non Retour, which was a distance of three miles. The slaves would walk straight from Ouidah and onto the ship, where they had only a space of five spare feet to themselves, on average.
The design we chose for our memorial is interactive, giving visitors a real representation of how small the ships were that the enslaved people were on. The design is a five-foot squared marked-off area with two bronze statues on either side. Four plaques in front of the space would have each of our four exhibits printed on them and would encourage visitors to lie down in the space to experience what life aboard a slave ship would be like.https://csuepress.columbusstate.edu/historyfrombelow/1034/thumbnail.jp
Bullying By Teachers: Preventative Measures in Hogwarts
Get PDFIn our case study, the Battle of Hogwarts, we decided to address the problem of bullying by teachers against students in the forms of discrimination, indoctrination, and maltreatment of students and how that might result in negative educational outcomes such as a lack of self-esteem, racist beliefs, discrimination, and stress. Students who were bullied before, during, and after the battle may have long-lasting problems that resulted from such instances of mistreatment. For example, professors such as Snape and the Carrows discriminated against Muggle-born students like Hermione. During the take-over of Hogwarts by the Death Eaters, Defense Against the Dark Arts was changed to the Dark Arts, therefore indoctrinating the students to Voldemort’s belief system. Finally, the use of the Cruciatus curse on misbehaving students was a form of maltreatment perpetrated by professors of Hogwarts. After reviewing the literature, as the founders of the New Age of Hogwarts, we have proposed a multidimensional and holistic solution that we will describe after defining our subject matter
