The Relationship Between I-Ready Intervention and Grade 8 Mathematical Achievement
Get PDFA problem exists in using educational software as an intervention for middle grades mathematics. The rural middle school used an educational program to improve mathematical achievement; however, the effectiveness of this program was not evaluated. The e-learning theory served as the theoretical framework for this study. The purpose of this explanatory, sequential mixed methods design was to examine the relationship between the i-Ready intervention program and students’ mathematical achievement and to explore teachers’ perceptions of implementing the i-Ready intervention program. The participants included 48 Grade 8 students from one middle school. A series of bivariate correlations was conducted using the diagnostic data from the i-Ready program, number of completed i-Ready lessons, and standardized mathematics assessment scores. An intrinsic case study was conducted using interviews from two teachers. The interviews were coded, and common themes were identified. The teachers perceived that the program could help students learn mathematical content if appropriate training was provided. The implications for the study include the need for professional learning and ongoing support for teachers to implement the program effectively
A Comparative Case Study Exploring the Experiences of Women Leaders in Academic Affairs and Administration in Higher Education Through the Lens of Intersectionality
Get PDFThere is an increasing concern about the absence of women in senior positions in academia and administration within institutions (Johnson, 2016). There is limited research to compare the journeys of women leaders in academics and administration. This study is an examination of women’s experiences of perceived barriers to leadership roles in faculty and administration. Using comprehensive interviews, this study explores personal accounts to emphasize apparent barriers to career advancement. The goal of the study is to explore women in senior positions in academia and administrative paths to leadership. The male dominated society has made it challenging for women to grow their careers in higher education. Bonawitz (2009) assessed factors including demographics, gender norms, education, employee relations, family, and unwritten rules. Additionally, researchers have evaluated policies and procedures to work on increasing the number of women in educational leadership (Bonawitz, 2009) Historically women have been a part of higher education, yet it’s not until recently that they have been represented in literature (Bonawitz, 2009). This study is a consideration of gender with an emphasis on institutional obstacles that hinder the progression of women into executive leadership positions in higher education. The study explores the leadership journeys of seven women leading in the roles of vice president level and up in administration and seven women serving in the roles of chair level and up on the academic side in the USG. I used intersectionality as a theoretical framework for the study. Yuval-Davis (2013) expressed that intersectionality is the examination of gender, race, and class as intersections. Lived experiences were examined to explore barriers and strategies that can impact individuals and groups concerning characteristics of gender and higher education. The study allows intersectionality theory to show different identities of women that are not often talked about in literature, while avoiding generalizations
Widespread reforestation before European influence on Amazonia
No full textAn estimated 90 to 95% of Indigenous people in Amazonia died after European contact. This population collapse is postulated to have caused decreases in atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations at around 1610 CE, as a result of a wave of land abandonment in the wake of disease, slavery, and warfare, whereby the attendant reversion to forest substantially increased terrestrial carbon sequestration. On the basis of 39 Amazonian fossil pollen records, we show that there was no synchronous reforestation event associated with such an atmospheric carbon dioxide response after European arrival in Amazonia. Instead, we find that, at most sites, land abandonment and forest regrowth began about 300 to 600 years before European arrival. Pre-European pandemics, social strife, or environmental change may have contributed to these early site abandonments and ecological shifts
Using a Literacy Based Behavioral Intervention to Teach College Students with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities to Request a Classroom Accommodation
No full textMany individuals with an intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) are attending postsecondary education programs, yet they are not always proficient in using self-advocacy skills, such as requesting an academic accommodation. Access to these accommodations is vital for success in the postsecondary settings. Literacy based behavioral interventions (LBBIs) use a combination of print, visuals, and rehearsal and are an effective tool for teaching a range of skills including job skills to this population, but have not been investigated with a self-advocacy skill. In this study, a pre-service teacher was taught to deliver an LBBI to postsecondary students with IDD so they would learn to request and use a free online tool to record class lectures. Results showed that students were able to master the skill with the pre-service teacher delivered LBBI and maintain the skill after removal of the LBBI
Stock market co-movement in Latin America and the US: evidence from a new approach
No full textPurpose: The purpose of this paper is to investigate the interlinkages among four major stock markets in Latin America, i.e., those in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Mexico, as well as their associations with the US stock market, which influences financial markets globally. Design/methodology/approach: Using the newly developed Hamilton filter methodology (Hamilton, 2018), the authors decompose each stock series to extract cyclical components. Findings: Results indicate that the US S&P 500 is weakly contemporaneously correlated with stock market indices in Brazil, Mexico and Argentina, whereas it also leads the latter by three months. As such, sufficient time is available for policymakers and investors to enhance their forecasts of the latter.
