Mining Network Traffic with the k-Means Clustering Algorithm for Stepping-Stone Intrusion Detection
No full textIntruders on the Internet usually launch network attacks through compromised hosts, called stepping stones, in order to reduce the chance of being detected. With stepping-stone intrusions, an attacker uses tools such as SSH to log in several compromised hosts remotely and create an interactive connection chain and then sends attacking packets to a target system. An effective method to detect such an intrusion is to estimate the length of a connection chain. In this paper, we develop an efficient algorithm to detect stepping-stone intrusion by mining network traffic using the k-means clustering. Existing approaches for connection-chain-based stepping-stone intrusion detection either are not effective or require a large number of TCP packets to be captured and processed and, thus, are not efficient. Our proposed detection algorithm can accurately determine the length of a connection chain without requiring a large number of TCP packets being captured and processed, so it is more efficient. Our proposed detection algorithm is also easier to implement than all existing approaches for stepping-stone intrusion detection. The effectiveness, correctness, and efficiency of our proposed detection algorithm are verified through well-designed network experiments

A Convergent Parallel Mixed Methods Study Measuring the Impact of Math-Economics Cross Curricular Intervention
Get PDFResearch studies in the past have linked math ability to success in economics courses. However, most of these studies have utilized a quantitative study design with limited studies testing the influence of math interventions on student’s academic ability in economics courses. This study will use a convergent mixed-methods research design to quantitatively measure the impact of a Math intervention on High School 11th and 12th grade Economics students and qualitatively observe student engagement and motivation during the intervention. A causal-comparative research design will be utilized for the quantitative strand to compare math ability in economics courses between students who participated in the intervention (experimental group) and those who did not participate in the intervention (control group). Students will be selected for the intervention based on their algebra and/or geometry end of course test scores as well as Northwest Evaluation Association Measures of Academic Progress Math 6+ Growth scores. Participants must have earned a level of beginning or developing learner on one or both tests. This study will utilize cross-curriculum collaboration between math and economics departments to develop and refine the intervention. Two years of retrospective data will be analyzed because the intervention started in 2018-19 academic year in the targeted school. Additionally, the researcher will collect data on student’s knowledge in the beginning, middle, and end of semester in the 2020-21 academic year. A dependent t-test will be utilized to measure change in student knowledge during the intervention which would assess the extent to which the intervention is successful in improving the Economics benchmark test scores. A phenomenological research design will be used for the qualitative strand to explore student engagement and motivation during math based economic interventions. Triangulation of quantitative and qualitative strands will occur through embedding and linking integration techniques
A Case Study: Increasing the Persistence and Graduation Rates of Undergraduate Black Female College Students at a Predominantly White Institution
Get PDFSince 1954, Black females were presented with the opportunity to earn an education equivalent to non-Black females. Despite the challenges, Black females have made significant strides in their academic performance by attaining degrees at every level over the years.
The purpose of the study is to explore factors that affected the retention and graduation rates of Black female undergraduate students enrolled at a Predominantly White Institution. The researcher will conduct an exploratory single-case study to explore Black female undergraduate students\u27 barriers to retention during their college experience. The sample included 10 Black female undergraduate students and three staff members from academic and non-academic student support services on the campus of SEU. The findings of the study indicate that the Black female undergraduate student participants have encountered at least one challenge that had a potential effect on their college persistence. Many student participants were not aware of the student support services available to them or did not feel comfortable using the services for assistance. Black female undergraduate students need to be engaged and build relationships to encourage them and develop a sense of belonging at a PWI. For some Black female undergraduate students, it may be necessary for PWIs to provide intentional support for student support services for the population to benefit from available services

No full textDo you REALLY know your students? - how often do we have preconceived notions about students based on a few emails or interactions with them? I know I do. I have a hard time not assuming that a student is lazy or just that they don\u27t care when they repeatedly ignore my emails or refuse to meet with me. Only to realize that their house just burnt down, they are struggling so much with their mental health that one more email seems unbearable to answer, or they just experienced something very traumatic. How much better can we serve our students when we find the root cause of their behavior? In this session I would love to share some of the things I\u27ve learned while working with our University Support Population - (Formerly probation and exclusion students)
