Bedney, who began her career at Andrews 
University in 1987, has devoted nearly 37 
years to advancing student financial support. 
Her journey began as the student accounts 
supervisor, a new position at the time, and 
progressed through various roles, including 
associate director, director and eventually 
assistant vice president of Student Financial 
Services.
The MSFAA, founded in 1967, is an orga-
nization dedicated to enhancing student fi-
nancial aid awareness, promoting access to 
postsecondary education and offering pro-
fessional development opportunities for its 
members. 
Reflecting on the award, Bedney shared 
her initial surprise and gratitude. “I was pret-
ty surprised and overwhelmed, but happy,” 
she said. “I have been working in this area 
for quite a few years, and I just felt privileged 
and honored to receive this award.”
Bedney’s commitment to student finances 
at Andrews has been marked by significant 
contributions and changes, including the 
merger of Student Accounts and Financial 
Aid into the unified Student Financial 
Services department. This integration aimed 
to provide a seamless, one-stop service for 
students, enhancing their financial manage-
ment experience.

Elynda Bedney, assistant vice president of Student Financial Services at 
Andrews University, was recently awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award 
at the Michigan Student Financial Aid Association’s (MSFAA) annual 
conference. This accolade recognizes her decades of dedicated service to 
student finances, reflecting her impact on the field.
The MSFAA Lifetime Achievement Award 
stands as a testament to Bedney’s remark-
able career and unwavering dedication to 
improving the financial aid landscape for 
students. Her legacy at Andrews University 
and within the financial aid community is one 
of excellence, compassion and leadership. 
Throughout her 37 years of service, Bedney’s 
influence on Student Financial Services has 
inspired many staff and students, and her 
work has always been propelled by her un-
wavering faith in God. 
She says, “I pray, throughout the day as 
students come, for God to give me a solu-
tion to students’ issues. The wonderful thing 
about working for a Christian institution is you 
can pray. You can pray with your students, 
and you can pray with your colleagues. That’s 
a big thing that we do here in my office. We 
invite God into every decision that we make. 
We invite God into our lives daily.” P

Her passion for student engagement and 
mentorship has been a cornerstone of her

to get to know your students, care about the 
students, be a listener for the students, and 
be an advocate for them.”

TELLING GOD'S STORIES 
My Dearest Daughter,
It’s been nearly eight years but I can still remember the day with such 
vivid clarity. I was sitting in class at the seminary when my phone 
rang. It was a call I had been waiting for, and yet when it came, I was 
filled with a mixture of excitement and nerves. I stepped outside the 
classroom to answer, heart pounding, knowing that my life could 
change in an instant.

It was your birth mother. Her voice was warm but 
filled with the weight of her decision, and when she 
asked me if I would be your mom, my entire world 
shifted. Holding my breath for a moment, and then 
with all certainty, I said yes. She chose me to be 
your mom, and in that moment, I chose you, too. 
You were prayed for long before I ever held you 
in my arms. And when it finally happened, the 
sheer joy and awe were overwhelming. I was ner-
vous, yes, but above all, I was so incredibly excited. 
Holding you felt like the beginning of a beautiful ad-
venture, one I wasn’t quite sure I was prepared for, 
but one I knew I was meant to be on. 
Along the way, there have been a lot of celebra-
tions. And we’ve faced challenges too, like when 
you crashed your first bike, and I had to wipe away 
your tears. There will be many more ahead of us but 
through it all, my prayer for you, my sweet girl, is 
that you always know where your strength lies. Life 
can be so unpredictable, filled with both mountain 
highs and valley lows, but no matter what comes 
your way, may you remember to lean on God. His 
word and His love will guide you through every-
thing, and I will always be by your side to celebrate 
the victories and help you through the struggles.
Life is moving so quickly, and it makes me want 
to hold on to these moments with you a little longer. 
You remind me every day to pause, to breathe, to 
appreciate the small wonders all around us. I’ll ad-
mit, there are times when I feel hurried, when we’re 
rushing to get out the door, or I’m trying to make 
sure we’re on time. But you, with your unbothered, 
gentle heart, remind me to slow down. Whether it’s 
because you’ve spotted a caterpillar inching along 
the sidewalk or because you’ve found a beauti-
ful leaf and want to admire its intricate veins, you 
teach me the value of being present. Please never 
lose that gift, that ability to notice the small, quiet 
wonders of this world. 
As you grow, continue to carry that same strong 
spirit with you. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, to 
stand up for what’s right, and to speak up for those 
who cannot speak for themselves. Keep your faith 
simple, yet strong. Continue to raise your voice for 
those who need it and never shy away from being 
a light for others. There will be moments of doubt, 
of fear, and of uncertainty, but remember, courage 
doesn’t mean you aren’t afraid. It means you take 
the step forward, even when you are afraid. 
Will there be moments when you find yourself in 
places where you feel like you don’t quite belong, 
where you seem different, and perhaps, alone? Oh, 
yes. I’ve sat at tables where I wasn’t invited. I’ve 
spoken in circles where my voice was the differ-
ent one. I’ve worked in environments where I was 
the only woman and treated as less than. It’s not 
always easy to stand out but remember this: Your 
courage to stay true to who God has called you to be 
in those moments is so very powerful. Don’t back 
away or back down. Your very presence in those 
spaces not only challenges the norms but creates a 
path for others who come behind you. You can be a 
glass-ceiling breaker. You can be an example. With 
every step you take, you’re showing the world, and 
yourself, that being who God has made you to be 
isn’t just OK, it’s what makes you extraordinary.
My precious daughter, above all, remember this: 
You are chosen. You are loved. You have a family, 
a whole tribe of people, who are cheering you on, 
supporting you, and lifting you up in prayer. And no 
matter what, God’s love for you is bigger than any-
thing you could ever imagine. His love will always 
be there, unchanging, unwavering, and it will carry 
you into eternity.

The Next BIG Thing 
What’s Coming Next In Youth Ministry

WHEN THE CYE initiated the 180° Symposium in 2008, the intention was to stop 
and do a 180° turn—something those serving in youth ministry rarely do. We’re always 
moving on to the next BIG thing, right? But the intentional pause enabled us to do some 
reflecting and evaluating—beyond counting the number of participants and/or feeling 
good about accolades received. This also led to giving consideration to purposes and 
desired end results, as well as the processes and methodologies we employ when it 
comes to youth ministry. The Center for Youth Evangelism, located on the campus of 
Andrews University and in the Seminary building, continues to be the ideal genesis for 
the 180° Symposium. Its staffing and location and connections provide consistency, 
promotion, and quality.
Over the years, youth ministry extended to include young adult ministry and, later, chil-
dren’s ministry as well. When the NAD Youth and Young Adult Ministries Department 
added additional funding as a sponsor and participant, the 180° Symposium extended its 
draw and engagement beyond primarily academic circles and a set of personal connec-
tions. AdventSource has published the papers from the very start into a collection of 
papers with limited circulation and awareness. That has now changed with the initia-
tion of The Journal of Adventist Youth and Young Adult Ministries now being the official 
publication of the papers and the key points and recommendations from the focus 
groups. In this second issue of the journal, we have added three book reviews as well. 
Following the development of the Andrews University Digital Commons, the papers 
prepared could be accessed anywhere someone had internet access, which has begun. 
When the Seminary’s youth ministry professor took a more active role in participating 
and drawing MDiv students into the gathering, younger and fresher minds added to the 
mix. Due to the pandemic, the event is now hybrid—including in-person participants 
as well as those online who are not able to physically be present at Andrews University 
for whatever reason.
At the same time, academic rigor continues to increase—something not usually asso-
ciated with youth ministry. The papers presented are now available to read prior to the 
gathering, and they have been peer-reviewed and edited. The 180° Symposium, with its 
built-in feedback system, further refines the papers. Proposals for the papers now get

submitted to the executive committee five months prior to the symposium. We continue 
to extend the reach to include more, even though, thus far, the flavor has had primarily 
a North American perspective.
What will happen with the 180° Symposium from 2023? Time will tell. But we now have 
continued the process of pausing to take a 180° turn to look back, and then pivoting 
again 180° to move forward. Our three sub-categories of “The Next BIG Thing” were: 
1. Elements that make SDA ministry to young people unique; 2. Immigrant ministry
and cultural challenges; and 3. Volunteer recruitment, training, and retention. We have
looked more deeply at each of these, which helps us in ministry while also beckoning us 
to go even deeper with these three sub-topics. The same thing will happen in 2024 with 
a new topic that focuses on ministering to and with young people in a secular world.
With a strong belief in God’s active presence in the work we do, we consider it our 
responsibility and privilege to engage in deep and earnest reflection and evaluation as 
we move forward in step with our Creator, Redeemer, and Friend.

The Common Core State Standards are an 
initiative instituted in 2009 that created a 
single set of standards, skills a child should 
have by the end of the twelfth grade in the 
areas of mathematics and language arts, 
applicable across all states with the goal of 
improving student achievement and college 
readiness and addressing the unequal 
variance of standards from state to state. Over 
the next two years, forty-six states adopted 
the standards. But as of now, that number sits 
at forty-one.

WHAT ARE CCSS?
• Encroachment on states' rights
• Unrealistic expectations for 1st and 2nd 
graders
• No set of grade-specific standards can 
fully reflect the great variety of abilities, 
needs, learning rates, and achievement 
levels of students in any given classroom
• Place too many restrictions on teachers
• Standardized tests are not valid measures 
of what students learn
• Costly to implement

FOR MY THOUGHTS
The potential advantages of Common Core 
Standards do not outweigh the problems they 
are already causing. While I do think that a 
national standard for knowledge of 
mathematics and language arts is a necessity, 
the current method of execution is faulty. For 
one thing, implementing this initiative places 
significant financial strain on already 
underfunded schools. Additionally, 
standardized testing has proven ineffective in 
gauging students' understanding of a topic. 
They do not take into consideration the needs 
of differently-abled children, different 
learning types, or the financial burden they 
place on impoverished students and families 
by setting high levels of expectation without 
providing resources to meet them.

he governor faced serious accusations of corrup-
tion. He was innocent, but many of his constitu-
ents did not know what to believe. e accusations 
included rumors of infidelity toward his wife. is 
upset him more because of how it aected his wife 
than how it aected his position as governor. If his 
wife believed such allegations, their relationship 
would be profoundly damaged. 
How could he clear his name and restore the 
relationships? Imagine he chose to imprison his 
accusers until they withdrew the charges against 
him. Would that help? No. It would be entirely coun-
terproductive, only making things worse—far worse!
Might the governor exercise his power in some 
other way to clear his name? No. Innocent though he 
may be, the more of his executive power he would 
use against his accusers, the more likely his constit-
uents would think he was corrupt. Slanderous alle-
gations against one’s name cannot be defeated by 
force or power. e only way to defeat such allega-
tions? Show them to be false by demonstration.
In our world God’s name has been dragged through 
the mud. is is no accident. is is the enemy’s strategy 
in the cosmic conflict, and has been throughout the ages.

SLANDER IN THE GARDEN
Genesis 1 and 2 tell of God’s creation of the world, all of which was 
“very good” (Gen. 1:31). But in Genesis 3 everything changes.
e story there begins, “Now the serpent was more cunning than 
any beast of the field which the Lord God had made” (Gen. 3:1). e 
Hebrew word for “cunning” or “crafty” is ambivalent—used of both 
good and evil agents throughout the Bible. If you were hearing this 
story for the first time, you might not yet know whether the serpent 
was good or evil.
is “crafty” serpent “said to the woman, ‘Has God indeed said, 
“You shall not eat of every tree of the garden”?’ ” (verse 1). e serpent 
started with what might seem like an innocent question. But the 
question stated nearly the exact opposite of what God had com-
manded. God told Adam and Eve they could eat from every tree except 
for one (Gen. 2:16, 17). It wasn’t really a hard commandment, by the 
way. It was not as if God had said they could eat from only one tree. 
Only one tree was o-limits.
Accordingly, Eve responded, “We may eat the fruit of the trees of the 
garden; but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, 
God has said, ‘You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die’ ” 
(Gen. 3:2, 3). 
“You will not surely die,” the serpent replied (Gen. 3:4). Here this 
“crafty” serpent eectively claimed that God was a liar.
At this juncture someone must have lied to Eve. She had a choice to 
make. Either God had lied or the serpent was now lying to her, but 
someone was a liar. Whom would Eve believe? 
e serpent didn’t merely allege that God was a liar, however. He 
also planted a motive: “For God knows that in the day you eat of it your 
eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil” 
(Gen. 3:5). e serpent eectively claimed, “God is lying to you because 
He wants to oppress you. He doesn’t want what is best for you. He 
wants to keep you in the dark.” 
e serpent’s allegations are deeply slanderous, painting a portrait 
of God that is the exact opposite of God’s character of unselfish love.
THE FATHER OF LIES
Revelation identifies this serpent as the devil, calling him “that 
serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole 
world” (Rev. 12:9). Jesus Himself teaches about this archdeceiver: 
“He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the 
truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he 
speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it” 
(John 8:44). 
Notably, the Greek word translated “devil” (diabolos) means “slan-
derer,” one who brings “charges with hostile intent.”1 Accordingly, when 
Ezekiel 28 introduces the fall of the angel who became the devil, it 
refers to his activity with a term that literally refers to slander (verse 
5).2 Satan is the slanderer from the beginning—the father of slander 
and archslanderer. From the very beginning until now and beyond, 
the serpent continues to slander God’s name in the cosmic conflict.

In direct contrast to Satan’s disinformation 
campaign, Jesus proclaimed of His own mission: 
“For this cause I was born, and for this cause I 
have come into the world, that I should bear wit-
ness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth 
hears My voice” (John 18:37). Notice the reason 
He came: to witness or testify to the truth. And 
He called His disciples to be witnesses to the truth 
(a major theme of Scripture).
Truth matters far more than most people think. 
But some do not believe Christ precisely 
because He testifies of the truth. Indeed, just after 
identifying the devil as the father of lies in John 
8, Jesus added, “But because I tell you the truth, 
you do not believe Me. . . . And if I tell you the 
truth, why do you not believe Me?” (verses 45, 46). 
We must be very careful not to believe simply 
what we want to believe. We might find ourselves 
rejecting God’s truth. 
CHERISHING TRUTH IN A POST-TRUTH AGE
We live in an age that has often been called the 
information age. But with the lies and deception 
that fly around in social media and beyond, ours 
might as well be called the disinformation age. We 
live in a new Babylon—in the sense of confusion. 
In my oce I have the following text hanging, 
which I continually try to follow: “Be diligent to 
present yourself approved to God, a worker who 
does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing 
the word of truth” (2 Tim. 2:15). It is not that I or 
you can be saved by knowledge. We cannot. But 
the truth nevertheless matters a great deal. We 
are to be ready to give reasons for our faith 
(1 Peter 3:15) and to thwart the fiery arrows of 
the devil (Eph. 6:16), knowing that many arrows 
in the devil’s arsenal aim at undermining the 
truth about God—especially God’s character of 
perfect justice and love. 
Again, that God’s name has been dragged 
through the mud is no accident. It is the enemy’s 
strategy. He is the archdeceiver and the archslan-
derer that seeks to displace God by causing crea-
tures to think God is a tyrant. His war against God 
is a war of disinformation. But even as a governor 
could not clear his name by force or a display of 
power, allegations against God’s character cannot 
be defeated by the exercise of power, but only by 
a demonstration of God’s character of perfect, 
unselfish love.  
Even if Satan were removed from the picture, 
without a demonstration of God’s character 
the doubts and distrust sown by Satan’s alle-
gations would persistently unravel the har-
mony of the universe. This is because love 
depends on trust, and if creatures do not trust 
God fully, love is undermined, and with it the 
very foundation of the harmony of the uni-
verse. God, then, demonstrates His character 
not for His own sake, but for ours, for without 
such demonstration the greatest good for all 
humans, love relationship with God, would 
be undermined.
e only way for God to root out evil once and 
for all is by a demonstration of His character of 
love that is sucient to answer all questions for 
all time—showing the devil’s allegations to be 
utterly false. is He does at the greatest cost to 
Himself, through (among other things) Christ’s 
giving His own life for us on the cross—the ulti-
mate display of love. 
In what some have referred to as a post-truth 
age, truth matters perhaps more than ever before. 
Christ came not only to (among other things) 
“bear witness to the truth” (John 18:37) but also 
to commission His followers to be witnesses. 
How much, then, should we devote to searching 
for truth, particularly to know God as deeply as 
possible, discerning truth from falsehood, and 
spreading the truth about God’s love far and 
wide—not only in words but also in deeds? 
Would you follow Christ? May we take up the 
high calling of seeking and knowing the truth and 
lovingly standing as one of Christ’s witnesses in 
an age of disinformation. 
“This is eternal life,” Jesus said to the Father, 
“that they may know You, the only true God, 
and Jesus Christ whom You have sent” (John 
17:3). How might you help someone else know 
Him today?
