Life, Theology, and Trauma Literature
As mentioned in their previous episode, Oliver and Ante continue discussing the topic of trauma rooted in personal experience. They examine the rise of trauma literature, how it has impacted biblical studies and theology, and the new insights it has brought to the table. While such reflections are not new--people have forever struggled with suffering, loss, grief, tragedy, and meaning--trauma discourse, with its strong connection to embodied experience, undoubtedly offers an enriched perspective on these aspects of human existence
The Dark Triad, Creativity and Morality
The Dark Triad of personality is the combination of narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy. The associative theory of creativity involves the default mode network of the brain, which is responsible for memory tasks, imagination, and thoughts of self. Since the Dark Triad traits involve inhibitory control and imagination, there is a high likelihood that observed alterations in these processes may be used to predict dark creativity patterns. Malevolent creativity involves using new ideas to complete tasks that will harm others. With creativity not being limited to positive outcomes, aspects of morality are also part of the creative decision-making processes. Morality is a key element of this project since that would affect the creative decision-making process. Therefore, the study of how these three constructs are correlated will shed light on how personality influences creative action
The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act and the Increase of Stock Buybacks
In 2017, the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) decreased the corporate tax rate from thirty-five (35) percent to twenty-one (21) percent. In addition, the TCJA imposed a one-time tax on liquid and fixed assets held off-shore at fifteen-point five (15.5) percent and eight (8) percent, respectively, paid over eight (8) years, by awarding essentially an interest-free loan, creating an incentive for corporations in the United States to repatriate their offshore cash. This research investigates how the TCJA impacted corporate government tax revenue (CGTR), how corporations used the cash gained from the corporate tax rate decrease, whether the decrease in tax rate and the concept of repatriation increased company stock buybacks, and how that does or does not impact corporation behavior and the economy. Our methodology focused on gathering and analyzing data from the two Federal Agencies: the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) online database and the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). We tracked and analyzed the CGTR depicted in the CBO from 2017-2023, which allowed us to note what corporate income taxes were before the TCJA and how CGTR was affected by the TCJA. Additionally, we analyzed specific corporation’s financial statements from the SEC, which provided us with the necessary information to conclude where corporations used their excess or extra cash gained through profits and the reduction in tax revenues discussed above. As one might have guessed, our results showed that corporate tax revenues initially declined substantially, and ultimately, companies used the “windfalls” to buy back their stock and other investments
Density and abundance estimation of West Indian manatee, Trichechus manatus, between the states of Ceará and Piauí, Northeast Brazil, using active acoustics
The West Indian manatee is one of the most threatened species in Brazil. The species has currently a patchy distribution from the state of Alagoas to the state of Amapá. The difficulty of observing manatees, especially in estuarine waters, is a challenge for conservation. Therefore, it is necessary to use new methodologies and technologies to solve manatee detection problems in their natural habitats. The goal of this study was to use an active acoustic method of detection to estimate manatee density and abundance in the estuarine complex of the Timonha and Ubatuba rivers, between the states of Ceará and Piauí, northeast Brazil. Data collection was conducted from a wooden boat with an outboard motor using a side-scan sonar. Sonar images were collected along line transects in three regions within the study area. Manatee abundance was calculated using distance sampling (Distance 6.0 software). There were 1,396 transection lines that totaled 863.6 km traveled in the study area. The observed general encounter rate was 0.089 group detected per kilometer traveled. The best detection model was the hazard-rate with no adjustment terms, resulting in a detection probability of 33.7%, and an estimated density for the entire study area of 9.19 manatees per km2. Abundance of manatees in the estuary was estimated to be 37 animals (CV% = 30.2, 95% CI = 21 - 66). The methodology using side-scan sonar proposed here was successful in the detection of manatees in the study area and in defining parameters for its use to estimate the population size using the distance sampling method. This study provides an estimate of manatee density and abundance in a key estuarine system along the northeast coast of Brazil, which can serve as a baseline for future studies and aid in the development of conservation strategies for the species. This is the first time this methodological approach has been used for manatee detection and abundance estimation in Brazil. We recommend the use of side-scan sonar in future West Indian manatee research
