    Minimum wage and the cost of living are both issues that are directly intertwined in our society. In this study, I use economic data from 2025 to examine how state minimum wage rates affect cost of living, grocery costs, average housing costs, and average utility costs by state. I hypothesize that states with higher minimum wages will have higher costs of living than states with lower minimum wages. I also examine the question longitudinally by examining the relationship between minimum wages in 2010 and changes in costs of living between 2010 and 2025

    Grip Strength & Correlation to Strength Expression in Barbell Movements

    Purpose: The Norwood Classic is a biannual powerlifting competition, established in 2020 to promote resistance training among students at Xavier University. Hosted at the campus recreation center, the event encourages three-person teams, with each member performing one of the three core powerlifting movements—bench press, squat, or deadlift—to determine their one-repetition maximum (1RM). Given the established relationship between hand grip strength (GS) and overall muscular strength, this study aimed to examine the association between GS and 1RM performance across the three powerlifting lifts, and document the anthropometric characteristics participants. Methods: Sixteen participants (14 males, 2 females) from the Fall 2024 Norwood Classic were assessed. Measurements included height, weight, GS, body fat percentage (%BF; via Omron HBF306), exercise Frequency, Intensity, and Time (FIT index), and 1RM in each participant’s assigned lift. Results: Participants had a mean height of 1.80±0.1 m, weight of 86.6±15.8 kg, BMI of 27.1±4.7 kg/m², GS of 47.7±11.5 kg, %BF of 15.4±5.1%, and FIT index of 91.8±13.4. Mean 1RM were significantly different across lifts: bench press (121.2±37.8, n=7) was lower than both squat (162.5±34.1, n=4) and deadlift (178.6±41.9, n=5) (p \u3c 0.05). GS was strongly correlated with bench press performance (r = 0.90, p \u3c 0.05), but not with squat or deadlift performance. Conclusion: GS demonstrated a strong positive association with upper body muscular strength, specifically bench press performance, but was not predictive of lower body strength. These findings support GS as a potential proxy for upper body strength assessment in resistance-trained individuals

    Challenging Dominance: U.S. Curriculum Representation of Diversity

    The United States is undergoing a significant demographic shift, particularly among its youth. According to U.S. Census Bureau projections, in 2020 the majority of children were expected to be of a race other than non-Hispanic White, a figure projected to rise to nearly two-thirds by 2060. Despite this increasing diversity, English curricula across the country have been slow to reflect multicultural perspectives. This disconnect highlights an urgent need for educational reform. Using U.S. Census data, this study argues for the integration of more inclusive literature in classrooms, advocating for a curriculum that better represents and serves our evolving student population

    Fluorescent Protein Expression

    To better understand how to overexpress and purify recombinant proteins, we performed purification of fluorescent proteins. The expression system used in this experiment to modify protein production utilized elements from the lac operon. The lac operon is critical for energy production in prokaryotic cells by facilitating the metabolism of lactose in the presence of low cellular glucose availability. Autoinduction media was utilized to induce the lac operon. Autoinduction promotes the expression of fluorescent proteins by supplying the cells with low levels of glucose and high levels of lactose. The eGFP protein was fully induced and expressed which was shown through a fluorescent green color, while the other proteins were not successfully expressed

    The Relationship Between Childhood Trauma and Externalizing Disorders

    Emotional and behavioral disorders have become an increasing concern among children and adolescents in the United States, with an estimated 17.1 million children and adolescents expected to be diagnosed with some form of emotional and behavioral disorder (Farmer et al., 2020). The most common of these externalizing disorders are Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), Conduct Disorder (CD), and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Childhood trauma is widely recognized as a significant factor contributing to these adverse behavioral outcomes. Research conducted by Ford et al. (2018) highlights that exposure to adverse childhood experiences (ACE) can disrupt emotional regulation and impulse control, increasing the likelihood of aggressive, defiant, or impulsive behaviors in children and adolescents. Farmer et al. (2020) suggests that children suffering from these disorders often face poor school readiness, negative student teacher relationships, peer rejection, and academic failure. Although trauma-informed care is increasingly implemented in clinical settings, there remains a need to further examine how trauma specifically relates to externalizing behaviors within real-world treatment populations. To address this need, this descriptive study will seek to describe the relationship between childhood trauma and externalizing disorders among youth served at Wasserman Day Treatment between 2024 and 2025. The results of this study aim to contribute to a deeper understanding of how early trauma may influence behavioral health outcomes. Additionally, the insights gained from this study may support the refinement of trauma-informed interventions and improve treatment planning for youth with externalizing disorders in community mental health settings

    Grocery Store Access and Incident Cancer Rates Relationships at the County Level

    Introduction: Approximately 2,041,910 Americans are projected to have a new (incident) cancer diagnosis in 2025 (Siegel et al.,2025); Kentucky has the highest United States total incident cancer rate at 508/100,000 (CDC.gov). Improper diet increases cancer risk, caused by food deserts (Healthline,2021;NIH,2024). Food Environment Index (FEI) and food deserts give insight into the quantity of grocery stores in a census tract. Examining county-level links between incident cancer rates (ICRs) and grocery store access may suggest safer, noninvasive statewide strategies to reduce cancer. Do grocery store access indicators affect incident cancer rates? Methods: Correlation tests, two-tailed student t-tests, and ArcGIS mapping were performed in a retrospective cross-sectional study with data from 2019-2022 of 120 Kentucky counties. Grocery store data from OpenStreetMap, USDA food desert data, and cancer data from NIH and CDC were housed in Excel and geocoded in ArcGIS. Each indicator was mapped at county level. Incident cancer rates for Kentucky counties with high and low indicators were tested. Data were tested at the 0.05 significance level. Limitations include grouping all cancers into one category. Results: The 5 highest and 5 lowest counties’ ICR per indicator were compared; FEI (p-value=0.000514) and store locations (p-value=0.0001) were statistically significant. Food deserts (p-value=0.174) were statistically insignificant. FEI (r=-0.086) and food deserts (r=-0.13) have no correlation, while grocery stores had a moderate negative correlation (r=-0.429). Conclusions: Counties with a higher FEI and lower grocery density have higher incident cancer rates. However, no relationship between counties with food deserts were found

    Intro: Employees with diabetes significantly increase healthcare costs for employers. Diabetes is the most expensive chronic condition in the U.S., costing an estimated 413billionin20224.Diabeticemployeescollectmedicalexpensesabout2.3timeshigherthanthosewithout2.Indirectcosts,includingcardiovasculardiseaseandhypertension,totalabout413 billion in 20224. Diabetic employees collect medical expenses about 2.3 times higher than those without2. Indirect costs, including cardiovascular disease and hypertension, total about 106 billion annually3. Type 2 diabetes is preventable through weight loss, healthy diet, and physical activity6. Employee wellness programs can identify potential health risks early, helping employees reduce risks and lower employer healthcare costs5. Does a fresh vegetable program increase produce consumption and support wellness in diabetic employees? Methods: Following IRB approval, employees with diabetes or pre-diabetes consented to receive free vegetables with weekly pick-up. A cross-sectional pilot study was conducted from May-October 2022. Data was collected at the start and end by on-site biometric measurements, confirmed A1c, and Veggie Meter® measure of skin carotenoids. Data were analyzed at the 0.05 level using Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Tests for variables with non-normal distribution. Blood pressure categories were ranked [normal=1, crisis=5]. Limitations include small sample size. Results: 45/50 employees completed the study; 17/45 had reduced A1c; median changes: weight (-1.53#); waist (-2.75”); A1c (-3.13); SBP (-7.69mm); carotenoids (+18.44). Waist circumference (p-value=0.0025), vegetable consumption (p-value=0.0018), and blood pressure (p-value=0.0005) were significant1. Of 18 employees in BP category H2, 7 improved by 1-3 categories. Conclusion: Results suggest increased vegetable consumption is associated with reduced waist circumference and blood pressure category

    Small businesses are susceptible to failure at a higher rate, especially after a disaster. Disasters include the weather, fire, pandemics, power outages, network failures, legal issues, cyber-attacks, and technical problems. One way to potentially mitigate failure is to create a business continuity plan (BCP) or a disaster recovery plan (DCP). Contained in the plan is the ability to return to operations. However, most small businesses do not have the time or financial resources to create the plans. Small businesses tendency of backup can lead to failure too. Enabling ChatGPT to guide the small business owner with directed prompts is an uncomplicated way to develop the plan, saving time and resources and generating a complete document
