Effects of Professor’s Tone of Voice on Student’s Perception, Engagement, Emotion and Interest
Communication skills are necessary for teachers to connect with students and encourage growth in classrooms. The present study examines the impact professors’ tone of voice has on students’ perceptions of a professor, situational interest, emotions of students, and engagement in learning materials. Participants (N=118) were randomly assigned an audio clip labeled as an introductory lecture on lightning formation given by a university professor. Participants were randomly assigned to one of six conditions, which included enthusiastic tone, monotone, or authoritative tone within the sex condition (male or female). After participants listened to the audio clip, they completed a questionnaire that measured all dependent variables (perceptions of a professor, situational interest, emotions of students, and engagement in learning materials). Participants reported demographic information through the questionnaire. Results indicated engaging tone of voice scored significantly higher than authoritative and monotone on Perception and Interest measures, and for some items on Emotion and Engagement measures. Additionally, the female scored significantly higher than the male professor for student’s perception. There were no significant interactions between the professor\u27s gender and tone. The present study demonstrates the importance of professor’s communication style for student learning and growth
Using qPCR to detect E. coli in water samples
Escherichia coli is a type of bacteria which lives in the intestines of warm-blooded animals and can often be used as a biological marker to show fecal contamination within water. The presence of E. coli in water is particularly dangerous, as numerous health issues can arise from drinking and swimming in contaminated water. Traditional methods used for detecting E. coli include culturing on differential and selective media. However, culturing is time-consuming and has low sample throughput. Alternatively, traditional PCR can be used to quickly identify bacterial species by detecting specific subsets of genes. Quantitative PCR (qPCR) has the same capabilities as traditional PCR and can also indicate relative amounts of bacteria present in environmental samples. In this project, we plan to use (q)PCR primers to specifically test for CydA, lacY, and ydiV which are all genes present in E. coli. Additionally, we will use primers to detect Shiga toxin producing E. coli (STEC), which is one of the main types of E. coli which causes foodborne illnesses
Factors Influencing High School Students’ Involvement and Continued Participation in School-Based Grief Support Groups at COJ
Companions on a Journey (COJ) provides grief support services to students in seventy public, private, and parochial schools across the Cincinnati area, offering monthly grief support groups. Attendance in COJ\u27s school-based grief support groups, particularly among high school students, often fluctuates throughout the year. Some students participate consistently, while others discontinue their involvement after only a few meetings. This study aims to explore the factors that influence high school students\u27 decisions to join and maintain participation in COJ\u27s school-based grief support groups. The research will focus on identifying the key motivations for enrollment and continued engagement in the program. Data will be collected through a survey distributed to current high school participants in COJ’s grief support groups. The survey will gather demographic data and assess students\u27 reasons for joining, the significance of various engagement factors, and the aspects of the group experience that promote sustained participation. The results of this study will provide valuable insights to inform COJ\u27s outreach strategies, improve group attendance, and guide program development
