An Investigation of How Specific SNPs Influence Green and Hazel Eye Pigmentation
Over the past two decades, research has increased on how different genes influence eye color pigmentation, with the focus being on brown-colored eyes, and blue-colored eyes. It has been observed through many studies that the SNP rs12913832 located at HERC2 influences OCA2, and results in blue eye pigmentation. Many studies also examine ‘intermediate’-colored eyes, i.e., green and hazel eyes and how the SNP rs12913832 located at HERC2 may influence the pigmentation observed for green and hazel eyes. In this study, the relationship SNP rs12913832 and eye color pigmentation was investigated by collecting DNA samples of donors with green or hazel eyes and performing a TaqMan Assay for SNP detection using primers for the SNP rs12913832. The eye color of each participant was photographed and compared to the Martin-Schultz eye color chart as well to better characterize the pigmentation of each donor’s eye. Through this study it was shown that while SNP rs12913832 at HERC2 can be used to determine brown pigmentation, it cannot be used independently to predict with 100% accuracy blue, green, and hazel pigmentation
Can Gender and Major Explain College Students’ Performance in Business Statistics?
Recent discussions in education, industry, and government have focused on the need for growth and diversity in STEM fields. STEM education and practice directly contribute to the economic vitality of a nation and benefit its citizens. Yet, STEM education and employment growth seem lopsided concerning both gender and diversity. While researchers have studied various dimensions of this phenomenon, this paper seeks to add to the knowledge base by analyzing the effects of gender and college major on performance and attitudes in statistics-related courses. T-tests, one-way analysis of variance, and multiple regression were used to investigate the effects of gender, major, and attitude on performance in business statistics courses. Results indicate that, in the business statistics course, there were no significant differences between the average score of male students and female students in 2 of 3 semesters. In the marketing research course, where similar statistical concepts as taught in the business statistics course were adopted, results were similar. However, there were differences in the students’ scores when their academic majors were considered. Findings from this study can contribute to developing effective and innovative pedagogical methodologies to teach statistics and related subjects
Natural Disaster Impacts on U.S. Banks
We examine how natural disasters affect bank performance during the 2000-2017 period. The results suggest bank offices in affected counties raise loan rates more than deposit rates. However, we find that community banks, not non-community banks, drive the results, and by being located in disaster-prone areas, they contribute to helping communities recover from natural disasters without any evidence of price gouging. This contributes to higher returns on assets and net interest margins for community banks. Yet, the banks\u27 resulting higher return on assets is not large enough that their offices in disaster-prone communities contribute to economically meaningful profits. Moreover, banks increase their use of brokered deposits after natural disasters to help offset any withdrawal of deposits by individuals and firms in affected communities
Does Absorptive Capacity Protect Shareholder Wealth in Times of Crisis? Evidence from the COVID-19 Pandemic
R&D capital increases firms’ ability to identify, absorb, and utilize new external information. Firms with absorptive capacity become resilient to external shocks while providing an opportunity to protect shareholder wealth during a crisis period. This study examines the role of firms’ absorptive capacity in protecting shareholder wealth around the COVID-19-induced stock market crisis. Our findings report that firms’ absorptive capacity is positively related to stock returns of US firms during the COVID-19 pandemic. This positive relationship exists irrespective of investor attention and is robust to the propensity-score-matching approach. Overall, the results imply that R&D capital makes firms resilient to external shocks
Mindfulness Based Intervention in UNH Capstone Courses
High demanding jobs can have negative impacts on psychological well-being and cognitive functioning. Capstone courses offer great benefits to students but can be an example of a high demanding job due to the rigorous workload in these courses. Mindfulness practices have been demonstrated in the literature to reduce the negative impacts of a high demanding job. The experiment conducted by the researchers used the mindfulness application, Mindfulness Coach, to attempt to reduce stress levels and improve working memory in University of New Haven students enrolled in a capstone course. It was hypothesized that the engagement with Mindfulness Coach would decrease participant’s stress and improve their working memory levels. Mindfulness interventions can have practical applications in participants to improve quality of life and improve academic performance. Significant results were not found meaning there was no effect on the variables. Limitations and future directions will be discussed to attempt to yield positive results to attempt to better college student’s experience
Post Pandemic Cyberbiosecurity Threats from Terrorist Groups
The research in this thesis explored the research question: Are United States (US) health systems accessible to cyber-bio terrorist attacks post-pandemic, within the context of the emerging discipline of cyberbiosecurity? Key findings of the analysis demonstrated how US health systems are more accessible to cyber-bio terrorist attacks specifically from cyber hacking groups based on the increasing sophistication of their cyber capabilities and the lack of cyber protection for biological systems. The concept of cyberbiosecurity was first introduced in 2018 by researchers exploring the converging threat landscape of the cyber and biology domains. As biology is growing more dependent upon vulnerable cyber infrastructure such as automation, artificial intelligence technologies, and Internet-connected devices, more threats exist for malicious actors to take advantage of those vulnerabilities and cause harm to public health, welfare, and security. With an overall increase in Internet usage, individuals working remotely, and online services and activities following the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, more information and data are stored, processed, and transmitted on vulnerable digital systems making them an attractive target for terrorist organizations (including cyber hacking groups and foreign terrorist groups). In addition, the advent of low-cost, advanced cyber and biotechnologies combined with easily available information, gives more people access to biological data and equipment that did not exist two decades ago. Although cyberbiosecurity encompasses more than just the security of healthcare systems -for the purposes of this scope- this thesis does not elaborate on cyber vulnerabilities and threats as applied to the agricultural or pastoral security domains. However, this thesis does cover cyber vulnerabilities and potential threats as they apply to healthcare systems, medical diagnosis, lab equipment, biotech supply chains, and biopharmaceuticals to name a few

If there is war tomorrow or the next day, it will almost certainly be because the Russian President doesn’t think Kyiv would exact a heavy human price from Russia’s forces for an invasion. US President Joe Biden and multiple European leaders have publicly warned Putin that an invasion would be costly: Diplomatic marginalization and financial sanctions are both on the table, but neither seems to have lured Putin back from the brink of conflict. Potential military costs, in the form of Russian losses on the battlefield, remain as the only viable disincentive that could stop Putin from invading Ukraine again

The Role of Protective Factors as a Moderator Between ACEs and Juvenile Delinquency
The current study measured the effect protective factors had on juvenile delinquency for individuals that have experienced adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). Previous studies have indicated that ACEs increase engagement in juvenile delinquency while protective factors produce the opposite effect. However, the impact protective factors have on the relationship between ACEs and juvenile delinquency has not been investigated. Therefore, the present study examined how protective factors act as a moderator in the relationship between ACEs and juvenile delinquency. This was measured using an electronic survey sent to university students and members of the community to examine the experience of ACEs, protective factors, and engagement in juvenile delinquency. The results indicated that participants with greater ACE scores were more likely to engage in juvenile delinquency. Participants with greater protective factors were less likely to engage in juvenile delinquency. A hierarchical multiple regression analysis indicated that the interaction between ACEs and protective factors was a significant predictor of juvenile delinquency. These results can inform strategies that aim to reduce juvenile delinquency for individuals that experience ACEs since protective factors appear to prevent juveniles from engaging in delinquent behavior
Migration, the Quality of Life, and Economic Opportunities in the U.S. Revisited: Impacts of Round-Trip Work Commute Time and Rent or Single-Family Housing Prices
Given the importance to businesses of having a better understanding of factors that influence migration, this study argues that there are two dimensions of the quality of life and economic opportunities that have largely been ignored in previously published studies of migration patterns in the U.S.: the impacts of (1) the costs of commuting between one’s residence and one’s place of employment and (2) apartment rent-levels and single-family housing price levels. It is hypothesized here that the greater the commute time between one’s prospective place of residence and one’s prospective place of employment, the greater the costs associated with in-migration to that potential residence in terms not only of the value of time expended round-trip in commuting but also the opportunity costs and mental health costs (stress) of that time along with the greater pecuniary costs that accompany longer commutes. Therefore, it is hypothesized that in-migration to an area is a decreasing function of commute time associated with that area. A second hypothesis proffered here is that greater housing-cost levels reduce disposable real income and hence utility. More specifically, we argue that either higher apartment rent levels or higher prices on single family homes reduce disposable real income and thereby reduce household well-being; hence, in-migration to an area is hypothesized to be a decreasing function of those higher rent levels and higher home prices. Based upon panel 2SLS estimates, where net in-migration and gross in-migration over the 2010-2017 period are separately considered, there is strong initial empirical support for both hypotheses
