Clarity, Organization, Precision, Economy: A Technical Writing Guide for Engineers
This fourth edition of COPE was sparked by my involvement with PITCH (Project to Integrate Technical Communication Habits) at the Tagliatela College of Engineering at the University of New Haven. This new edition contains additional material on data displays, as well as some additional material on writing about data—including how to avoid rhetorical shifts that undermine the precision of a technical report.https://digitalcommons.newhaven.edu/civilengineering-books/1000/thumbnail.jp
Pathways to Peer Victimization: The Impact of Childhood Adversity on Social Relationships
The purpose of the research study was to explore the connection between the presence of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES) and pathways to the experience of peer victimization. Previous literature indicates that ACEs can have far-reaching negative effects into adulthood. Individuals with multiple ACEs have an increased risk of developing various physical and mental health issues as both children and adults. Research has also demonstrated that ACEs can negatively impact social affiliation and can preclude individuals from seeking social support. Social support is also pertinent in predicting the peer victimization because positive interactions with peers are protective against victimization. However, the relationship between ACEs, social connectedness, and peer victimization is not well understood and few studies have examined the potential connections. Therefore, the present studied examined how the experience of ACEs related to social connectedness and reported victimization. An electronic survey was conducted using university undergraduate students with ACE score as predictor variable, and social connectedness and victimization as dependent variables. The results indicated that participants with higher ACE scores were more likely to report lower social connectedness. Participants with high ACE scores and lower social connectedness were more likely to report experiences of victimization. A path analysis revealed that social connectedness mediated the relationship between ACE scores and reported victimization. Implications and future research directions are discussed
Estimating the Psychological Impact of Mass Shooting and Terrorist Attacks on Remote Populations
Most research examining the psychological impact of public mass-shootings and terrorist attacks focuses on the immediate victims (i.e., those at/near the scene of the crime or living nearby). Research consistently demonstrates that these directly targeted individuals experience a wide-array of adverse mental health outcomes following these traumatic events (Lowe & Galea, 2017; Wilson, 2014). What remains less understood, however, is how these violent episodes afflict the broader public who are exposed to the trauma largely through indirect means, such as media and word of mouth. While prior scholarship in this area remains quite limited, it also tends to suffer from several methodological limitations (e.g., cross sectional research design or case-study analysis of singular events). To address these limitations, this study employed a Time Series Cross Sectional (TSCS) framework, enabling an estimation of the impact of mass shooting and terrorist attacks on the general public across 72 deadly events during a 6-year period (2012-2017). In addition, this study involved an empirical testing of dose-response theory (APA, 1980), utilizing characteristics of each event (casualty rates and level of media exposure) as proxy measures for trauma dosage. Overall, findings from this study indicate that remotely exposed communities are not seriously affected psychologically by these incidents. Research and policy implications for public health and media reporting are discussed
Effects of Bacterial Metabolites in Conditioned Media on Colon Cancer Proliferation
Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States with colorectal cancer (CRC) being the third most common type. Available treatments include a combination of surgery and chemotherapy but have debilitating side effects. These also have limited effectiveness in some cases, creating the need for additional treatment options, or supplementary treatments to increase their effectiveness. This is leading scientists to consider the microbiome to fix this shortcoming. Current research is focusing on the microbiome and its interactions with certain diseases, which could lead to pro- or prebiotic therapies. This work aims to establish specific bacterial species can inhibit tumor cell growth and function. Conditioned media with a bacterial supernatant was added to cancerous and non-cancerous cells and their effect on the cell growth, proliferation, and invasiveness was assessed. It was determined that Lactobacillus intestinalis, Bacteroides uniformis, Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron, and Prevotella copri all show potential in reducing cancer cell growth. This work demonstrates the potential to significantly enhance current immunotherapies and/or replace chemotherapies as well as aid in the understanding of the role of the microbiome in cancer
The U.S. National Security Threat—The Challenge for Intellectual Property Protection of U.S. Business in the China Market
The reason for doing this paper is that I am engaged in the protection of intellectual property in the Taiwan police department. I\u27m interested in studying international intellectual property protection. Dealing mostly with Chinese-related cases, this paper aims to explore the relation between China stealing intellectual property rights from the US and how this threatens national security. Therefore, this paper will focus on four issues: how does China steal intellectual property from American businesses? Why does intellectual property infringement frequently occur in China? What national security threat China poses to the U.S.? What policy or method does the U.S. take to respond? China has stolen U.S. technology, committed patent infringement, and has even forced American companies to transfer trade secrets since the 1980s. All of these have become a U.S. national security threat. In 2019, the Senate Intelligence Committee of the US Justice Department reported that more than 90 percent of economic espionage crimes were associated with China from 2011-2018. This suggests that China is the biggest offender of transferring state secrets and spying on the US government. In addition, this paper will review different opinions on the relationship between protection policy, the change of infringement of intellectual property, and national security and attempt to analyze their impact on U.S.-China relation
Investigating the Use of SALIgAE® to Identify Expirated Blood on Various Material
Expirated bloodstains and impact bloodstains have very similar physical characteristics. The main way Blood Pattern Analysts identify bloodstains in based on their physical characteristics. This can lead to difficulty distinguishing between expirated blood and impact spatter. Expirated blood can be identified through the presence of air bubbles, however these are often only present on non-porous surfaces. However, if expirated bloodstains can be identified through the presence of saliva, this can provide an alternative way to identify expirated bloodstains. This study examined if SALIgAE can be accurately used to identify the presence of saliva in blood and thus, be a way to identify expirated bloodstains. Dilutions of saliva to water, saliva to blood, as well as reconstructed expirated stains were created. Expirated stains on white butcher paper as well as five different substrates were produced. The substrates consisted of, carpet, white T-shirt, denim, black T-shirt, and tile. SALIgAE was visually examined for a color change. SALIgAE was also analyzed with a UV-VIS spectrophotometer to obtain quantitative data. The results showed that SALIgAE can identify the presence saliva in dilutions of saliva to blood as well as expirated bloodstains. The spectrophotometer allowed the concentration of salivary α amylase to be determined. This study proves that SALIgAE can be used to accurately identify expirated bloodstains as well as be analyzed by the spectrophotometer to obtain the concentration of salivary α amylase in the sample
A Bibliometric Analysis of Behavioral Finance and Behavioral Accounting
This paper presents a bibliometric analysis of relevant publications in the field of behavioral finance and behavioral accounting. The analysis shows that the emerging themes of research in recent years in behavioral finance is on investors’ sentiment, social media, investors’ attention, and financial literacy. In the field of behavioral accounting, biases such as overconfidence, framing effects or cognitive constraints on information processing, have been explored in greater detail. Other than cognitive biases, this field includes studies such as behavioral tax, organizational ecology, and performance evaluative style of organization, among others. Interestingly, our analysis suggests that research in behavioral accounting is comparatively underdeveloped than research in behavioral finance. This bibliometric analysis has been extended by network analysis using, “Visualization of similarities, (VOS) viewer” software. Using the themes generated here the direction for future scope of research work has been discussed
Sentiment Analysis of COVID-19 Pandemic on the Stock Market
COVID-19 is a dreadful infectious disease, morphed into an economic crisis causing extensive and longstanding ramifications across global markets. Investors continue to hear about COVID-19 and its impact in one corner of the globe or the other for a long time. Though the effects of COVID19 started in December 2019 in Wuhan, China, global markets did not respond actively till W.H.O officially declared on March 11, 2020, that the COVID19 outbreak is a global pandemic. These multi-channel events have eroded investor sentiment, tanking the global stock markets. This article uses a machine learning approach to Twitter to analyze and follow investor sentiment that has guided the market to the new low during the first 150 days of the COVID-19 era. The only respite for recovery of financial markets is the lowering of COVID-19 infected cases for the time being till a vaccine is developed for the virus
Zooming into the pandemic! A forensic analysis of the Zoom Application
The global pandemic of COVID-19 has turned the spotlight on video conferencing applications like never before. In this critical time, applications such as Zoom have experienced a surge in its user base jump over the 300 million daily mark (ZoomBlog, 2020). The increase in use has led malicious actors to exploit the application, and in many cases perform Zoom Bombings. Therefore forensically examining Zoom is inevitable. Our work details the primary disk, network, and memory forensic analysis of the Zoom video conferencing application. Results demonstrate it is possible to find users\u27 critical information in plain text and/or encrypted/encoded, such as chat messages, names, email addresses, passwords, and much more through network captures, forensic imaging of digital devices, and memory forensics. Furthermore we elaborate on interesting anti-forensics techniques employed by the Zoom application when contacts are deleted from the Zoom application\u27s contact list
European Union Integration: A Stabilizing Force for Bosnia-Herzegovina?
This empirical study investigates whether European Union (EU) integration will enable Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) to politically stabilize and fully integrate into the EU by 2030. In the first part, data from a panel of 17 Central and Eastern European countries from 2000-2019 is statistically analyzed to determine whether EU integration and its components are significant determinants of political stability, in order to interpret BiH’s data in the context of those relationships. This analysis provides support to the EU theory that states can increase their political stability by implementing reforms throughout the integration process. GDP per capita, ethnic fractionalization, unemployment, and education were significant determinants of political stability in the region. In the second part, historical trends and current estimates of the variables in BiH are analyzed to inform BiH’s performance in variables that have a significant relationship with political stability. It also analyzes trends in BiH’s overall political stability and progress in EU integration. The findings from the analysis on data from BiH display that BiH has performed poorly in variables relevant to political stability, including the EU integration process, and is severely lagging behind other states in the region. BiH’s poor performance in these variables is largely caused by BiH’s government inefficiency that has resulted from its ethno-based political system. This study’s results overall inform the conclusion that BiH is unlikely to politically stabilize and fully integrate into the EU by 2030 and support the recommendation by scholars that changes to EU policy on BiH are necessary
