Ohio Forensic Nurse Examiners: Readiness to Care for Victims of Sexual Assault with Disability
Forensic nurse examiners (FNEs) care for crime victims in acute care settings. These nurses are specifically trained in trauma-informed care and evidence collection in cases of sexual assault, domestic violence, abuse, and human trafficking (RAINN, 2022). The scholarly project focuses on the care of victims of sexual assault living with disability, as this population is three times more likely to be victimized than any other population (NSVRC, 2022). The project literature review reveals a lack of data on preparation standards for FNEs on caring for victims with disability and providing accommodations during forensic examination. Currently, it is unknown if FNEs in the state of Ohio receive the same degree and quality of education regarding the specific needs of disabled victims who have experienced and been affected by a criminal act. Also, it is unknown if knowledge deficits and clinical practice gaps exist among the Ohio FNEs providing care to this potentially vulnerable population. To identify, assess, and address any existing gaps in preparation a 10-question survey was distributed to FNE’s in the state of Ohio through email. The survey was formulated with the assistance of the Dr. Joy Shoemaker of Otterbein University, Ruth Downing of Forensic Nursing Network, LLC, and the Adult Advocacy Centers administration team. Findings of the survey concluded that 57.9% of respondents did not have disability-specific education in their FNE training course in the state of Ohio. Respondents were from all 5 identified regions of Ohio, with the majority practicing in Central Ohio with representation from all regions included. In conclusion, the survey established that disability training is not standardized in current FNE training programs in the state of Ohio
Implementation of Seasonal Diets through Seasonal Diet Surveys in Sloth Bears (Melursus ursinus): A Case Study at Idaho Falls Zoo
Wild sloth bears (Melursus ursinus) display seasonal diet preferences for insects and fruit during the dry and monsoon season respectively. To potentially utilize as a method for reducing abnormal behaviors and improving animal welfare, the purpose of the study is to survey zoos with captive sloth bears and determine if zoo-housed individuals display seasonal diet preferences. From May 18th, 2022 to March 2nd, 2023 data was collected on Priya, a sloth bear from Idaho Falls Zoo, and her preference for fruit and insects. Temperature, season, fruit choice based on sugar levels, and insect choice based on texture of exterior were investigated as potential drivers of diet preference. Analysis determined there was no significant difference in preference of insect or fruit between fruit used (P = 0.317), insect used (P = 0.355), temperature (P=.167), and season (P = 0.150). Overall, insects were selected most of the time (75.9%) followed by fruit (20.7%), and neither fruits nor insects (3.4%). Potential factors such as Priya’s baby Jagger and the selection of fruits and insects could have an impact on the individual’s preferences. Further studies that replicate the study with more subjects, a greater time frame such as multiple years, and the replacement of fruits and insects with more natural options could provide a more supported conclusion on captive sloth bear preference. If significance is determined with more data, applications towards the effect of seasonal diet as food enrichment towards mitigation of abnormal behaviors could be studied

The Fall Faculty Conference featured a talk entitled Healing Through Connection: Lessons Learned from the Frontlines of Healthcare by Dr. Laurie Hommema, Senior Medical Director, Provider and Associate Well-Being, Ohio Health, Kristi McClure, MSN, RN, and Lois Sallee, MA, CCC-SLP.
Following the community conversation, faculty broke into different sessions that dealt with helping students become ready for Otterbein, advising success, immersive experiences, launching, and succeeding. After the breakout sessions, several faculty members showcased topics they had been working on. Diabetic Ketoacidosis in Pediatric Patients
Abstract
Diabetic ketoacidosis is a life-threatening complication in children with type 1 diabetes. Children with type 1 diabetes cannot produce endogenous insulin and must receive exogenous insulin to allow glucose influx into cells throughout the body for energy consumption. Without insulin, the child will progress to diabetic ketoacidosis. The covid-19 pandemic introduced new obstacles for patients with a predisposition for type 1 diabetes, presenting with a more profound acidosis, greater need for supplemental oxygen, and increased vasopressor requirements. Diagnostically, DKA presents as hyperglycemia with metabolic acidosis and low serum bicarbonate levels. Treatment aims to restore intravascular volume, correct electrolyte abnormalities, improve acid-base balance, and treat insulin deficiency. In conclusion, DKA is a severe medical condition that can result in death without medical intervention. Understanding signs, symptoms, pathology, diagnosis, and treatment is crucial for healthcare workers to provide safe and effective care for these patients.

Pathophysiology of Pulmonary Hypertension
Abstract
Understanding the pathophysiology behind various diseases is essential for nursing, especially those in advanced practice roles such as nurse anesthetists. Pulmonary hypertension (PH), characterized by vasoconstriction, vascular remodeling, and thrombosis, has a complex physiological process and a vast compilation of patient considerations (Sarkar & Desai, 2018). PH affects up to fifty million people worldwide, with 1-year survival rates of 90.4% and 5-year survival rate of 65.4%, further solidifying the importance of understanding the disease for quick diagnosis and treatment (Bandyopadhyay et al., 2021). Diagnosis of PH is often delayed, with some patients experiencing symptoms up to two years before diagnosis (Poch & Mandel, 2021). Due to the non-specific nature of symptoms and possible morbidity and mortality resulting from right ventricular failure in those with PH, specialized care is a top priority (Bandyopadhyay et al., 2021; Mandras et al., 2020). Awareness of PH for health care professionals, especially nurse anesthetists, is imperative for preventing adverse events. This poster provides a look into the pathophysiology of PH, focusing on specifics such as signs and symptoms, pathophysiology implications, diagnostics, and treatments to educate healthcare providers. Education leading to recognition of PH is pertinent for exemplar patient care (Mandras et al., 2020).
