Nosocomial Antibiotic-Associated Clostridium Difficile Infections: An Organizational Assessment
Clostridium difficile (C. difficile) are toxigenic, spore-forming bacteria that live in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract of healthy individuals without harm to the host due to the protection offered by the natural intestinal flora. Antibiotics can disrupt the intestinal flora and create an environment within the GI tract that promotes the infectious growth of C. difficile. C. difficile infections (CDIs) are the most common cause of antibiotic-associated diarrhea, are highly contagious, and can result in an increased risk of morbidities and mortality to individuals affected. Recent studies and literature reviews identified the use of probiotic therapy in patients receiving antibiotics to be an effective prophylactic intervention for decreasing antibiotic-associated CDI occurrence. The purpose of this organizational assessment was to compile organizational data concerning nosocomial CDIs as a prerequisite to future practice changes regarding the use of probiotics for the prevention of nosocomial antibiotic-associated CDIs. Authentic Low-Stakes Practice to Make Meaning Lasting for ELLs: Creating Vocabulary Chants and Songs to Enhance the Word Generation Curriculum
This curriculum creation is designed to supplement the Word Generation (WordGen) vocabulary program for middle school students. It adds songs and chants of the weekly focus words for use as a mnemonic device to remember and synthesize word meaning. The WordGen curriculum is heavily based on reading and writing and English Language Learners (ELLs) are at a disadvantage when tasked with learning and understanding academic vocabulary due to the short length of time for mastery (Cummins, 1999; Collier, 1987; Thompson, 2017). This curriculum is inspired by the desire to appeal to ELLs who would respond favorably to music or kinesthetic modalities in the language classroom. Using music to teach language is found to be a positive way to engage students and facilitate a low-stakes method to learning and practicing language (Bialls, et al., 2021; Chen, 2020l; Landesman Scheckel, 2020; Li & Brand, 2009; Rukholm, 2015). The first two chapters of WordGen have been supplemented with songs and chants/raps for use in ELL and general content classrooms
MHC Diversity Analysis of Spheniscus demersus for in situ and ex situ Populations
The South African Penguin has been listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Major histocompatibility complex (MHC) alleles provide valuable statistics because of their variation in terms of vertebrate genomes and are pertinent to immune and reproductive health. A greater number of MHC alleles correlates with survivability of a population because the genes control the immune and reproductive systems. Legacy research by Otterbein alumni and Dr. Simon Lawrance studied MHC samples from wild, in situ, and captive, ex situ, penguin populations. By comparing these populations\u27 major histocompatibility complexes through biostatistical analysis, contributions to conservation of the species both inside and out of the wild can be made. One goal of this research was to compare the MHC of in situ and ex situ penguins through analysis of previously obtained allele sequences and identification of unreported alleles. Another goal was to expand the scope of the previous work done by colleagues through applying new primers to old samples. This primer set encompasses the entirety of Exon 2 which contains the coding sequences for the MHC class II beta chain. Out of six prior MHC class II samples, three unreported alleles were analyzed as potential new alleles. The first polymerase chain reaction product of penguin blood using the new primers, Lpen.hum1F and Lpen.hum2R, was sequenced and its results show a promising level of polymorphism across the length of the sequence
Ohio Anuran Gut Microbiomes
Recent studies focusing on the skin and gut microbiome of vertebrates have found how important microbiomes are to maintaining host health. Understanding the role the gut microbiome plays to host health is of great importance for conservation. Less is known about the gut microbiome than the skin microbiome for amphibians. Literature is especially lacking for local Ohio anuran species. The purpose of this study was to establish the baseline composition of the gut microbiome for local Ohio anurans and to determine whether host species or habitat is the best predictor of gut microbiome composition. Tadpoles were collected from seven different central Ohio locations including: (1) Heritage Park, two trails from (2, 3) Inniswood Metro Gardens, (4) Boyer Nature Preserve, (5) Sharon Woods Metro Park, (6) Highlands Park, (7) a private pond in Galena, Ohio. Five species were collected in total including Lithobates [Rana] sylvaticus, Lithobates pipiens, Anaxyrus americanus, Lithobates clamitans, and Pseudacris crucifer. I removed their GI tracts, extracted the DNA, then sent the DNA samples to MSU for Illumina sequencing. QIIME 2 was used to analyze and describe the microbiomes of the samples and calculate alpha and beta phylogenetic diversity. Firmicutes, Bacteroidota, and Proteobacteria were the three most abundant phyla across the samples. Alpha diversity was high across samples. Beta diversity showed location to be a significant driver of gut microbiome composition for three out of four of our major comparisons. Future directions include comparing tadpole gut microbiomes to the composition of their diet and more observational research of the gut microbiome from wild samples of amphibians
