Music for Anxiolysis in Primigravida Undergoing Cesarean Delivery Under Neuraxial Anesthesia
Primigravida women undergoing cesarean section under neuraxial anesthesia frequently suffer from anxiety in the perioperative period. Literature suggests this population suffers disproportionately due to gender, surgical naiveness, lack of birthing experience, fear of complications, and exposure to the operating theatre’s noxious environment. Despite the high anxiety prevalence and numerous negative consequences, safe treatment options are lacking. Unfortunately, contemporary pharmacologic therapy to treat anxiety threatens the parturient and the fetus. However, the field of medicine has long appreciated music’s physiologically calming effects on the body. This project details a literature search, review, synthesis, and analysis of the available literature supporting and guiding the use of music intervention in the defined population. With the Iowa Model, this final scholarly project develops evidence-based practice guidelines for using music as a form of anxiolysis in the perioperative period. The secondary goals for the project were to create a comprehensive implementation, monitoring, and adjustment plan if the project outcomes were not as expected. The project was developed for the proposed implementation at a high throughput obstetric and gynecological unit within a large, inner-city, comprehensive teaching hospital in Southwest Ohio with a Level 1 Trauma Center designation. By implementing music intervention in the perioperative period for primigravida women undergoing cesarean section under neuraxial anesthesia, women can enjoy decreased levels of anxiety, decreased incidence of tachycardia, and other improved surgical and anesthesia outcomes

Development of Evidence-based Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Prevention of Peripheral Neurological Injury During Robotic-assisted Prostatectomies for Patients in the Steep Trendelenburg Position
Robotic-assisted surgery (RAS) is becoming more prevalent in modern surgical practice and is currently being utilized in a range of surgical specialties from colorectal and gynecological procedures to bariatrics and orthopedics. Every surgical procedure has potential risk to patients, however robotic-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomies (RALP) in the steep Trendelenburg (ST) position poses unique risk for peripheral nerve injury (PNI). Despite attempts to reduce the incidence rate of PNI during RALP, injuries are still occurring to patients causing patient harm and anesthesia provider litigation. The implementation of a CRNA based safety checklist may reduce the incidence rate of PNI and provider litigation for these procedures. The overall purpose of this quality improvement project is to reduce the risk of PNI to patients undergoing anesthesia during RALP. The primary aim of the project is to create, implement, and evaluate the effects an evidence-based clinical practice safety checklist for use in conjunction with the surgical timeouts will have on the incidence rate of PNI. The following objectives have been established to achieve the aim of this project: 1) create and incorporate a practice safety checklist for CRNAs to use during surgical timeouts, using best practice evidence from the literature, 2) compare pre-and post-implementation outcome findings using clinical observations audits and lastly 3) provide project findings, identified barriers, and recommendations for sustainment and continued monitoring, using a SWOT analysis briefing and discussion format to the key stakeholders

MEXICANIDAD AND THE RACIAL IMPLICATIONS OF MEZTIZAJE THROUGH HORROR AND FANTASY IN SILVIA MORENO GARCIA’S NOVELS: MEXICAN GOTHIC (2020), DAUGHTER OF DOCTOR MOREAU (2022) AND SILVER NITRATE (2023)
Mexicanidad was a movement influenced by Indigenismo that merged Spanish and Indigenous heritage, creating a movement merging culture into a homogenous racial identity represented by the Spanish caste level of Mestizo. Literature explaining and exploring the ideas behind mestizaje begin to appear after the Mexican Revolution of 1910. Silvia Moreno-Garcia, a 21st-century Mexican-Canadian author, begins to explore the embedded racism in Mexican society in her three novels: Mexican Gothic (2020), Daughter of Doctor Moreau (2022), and Silver Nitrate (2023). In her novels, she uses fantasy and horror elements to illustrate the monstrosity behind colonialism and eugenics.
