A critical analysis of Helon Habila’s waiting for an angel: a postcolonial perspective

    No full text
In essence, this paper seeks to read Helon Habila’s Waiting for an Angel more as the material product of the postcolonial period and a particular cultural context. Thus, the paper adopts the postcolonial theory through which African writers such as Habila strive to question the postcolonial realities in African societies. This style of African writing is called “new realism, apparently, in recognition of a wave of the verisimilar portrayal of poverty, disillusionment, misgovernance, and political ineptitude in African literature, within the context of a postcolonial Africa. The paper concludes that although Africans rejoice their newly-won independence from the colonizer, still they experience a new sort of misfortune and adversity, a form of reality following colonialism, in the hands of African leaders. This novel Waiting for an Angel illustrates the concrete repulsions of postcolonial Nigeria in a substandard sketch of the daily realities. The disgraceful and desperate image represented in the text indicates the depressed human spirit wanting and expecting an angel of freedom

Scuba diving is one of the most popular activities that involve risks with nature. It can lead to major injuries or even cause deaths. The rate of exposure to fatality among scuba divers has become a major concern. The number of fatalities among the divers in the United States (U.S.) and Canada is in between 80 to 100 per year. The statistic also shows over 16 fatalities rate among the divers in the U.S. and Canada for every 100,000 recreational divers per year. There are three countries with a high number of deaths among the divers in Asia, which are Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand. The statistic shows that these three countries have an increasing number of accidents in scuba diving activities. The upshot rate of fatalities should not be neglected and needed a critical emphasis. This paper aims to propose a framework that shows the effect of diving equipment on accidents among scuba divers. A review of previous studies was conducted to meet the objective. A previous study indicated that diving equipment had a relationship with human error in the scuba diving activity. Diving equipment condition can be measured based on equipment malfunction, faults, and misuse. Diving equipment can be one of the factors that lead to accidents among divers. For scuba diving, divers need to know the equipment before continuing with the activities to avoid any undesired situation. A direct relationship was proposed to find the effect of diving equipment and accidents. The study will contribute to the tourism sector for marine tourism’s sustainability in reducing fatality accidents among recreational divers

Globally, smart tourism market demands has a tremendous impact on the number of tourists visiting Malaysia. Arguably, the tourism sector brings a positive effect to rural communities’ areas through the economic diversification from various business activities. Therefore, the government had put serious attention to this sector as it brings a positive outcome especially to generate more income for local people. However, it has been observed that employees in the tourism industry in Malaysia are lack of awareness in adopting the Islamic smart tourism concept even though they are aware of the diversification of Malaysian' ethnic and culture. For example, lack of knowledge about cultural sensitivity and Halal food will create an issue for foreign tourist and local people. Furthermore, the lack of promotion and information about historical places in Malaysia and interesting places to visit have become the main concern of failing to adopt smart tourism in Malaysia. Therefore, this study intends to examine the impact of Trust (goodwill, predictability, competence), Culture (power distance, uncertainty avoidance, individualism/collectivism, masculinity/femininity), Technology readiness (insecurity, innovativeness, discomfort, complexity), and the moderating role of social media platforms to provide more understanding about the Islamic smart tourism industry in Malaysia

The Effect of 1-Triacontanol on the Growth, Flowering, and Quality of Potted Bougainvillea Plants (Bougainvillea glabra var. ‘‘Elizabeth Angus’’)

    No full text
Triacontanol (TRIA), a plant growth regulator found in epicuticular waxes can regulates the physiological and biochemical parameters of bougainvillea as well as many ornamental plants. Many researchers reported that TRIA treatment improve growth, yield, protein synthesis, photosynthesis, water and nutrient uptake, nitrogen fixation, enzymes activities, and content of free amino acids, soluble protein, reducing sugars and biochemical constituents in various crop. TRIA-mediated increase in dry matter production could influence the inter-relationship between primary and secondary metabolism, leading to increased biosynthesis of secondary products. Various studies present strong evidences that application of TRIA applied either to the root medium or to leaves enhanced the growth and yield of vegetables and other crops, including agronomic and horticultural crops as well as medicinal and aromatic crop plants under normal and adverse conditions. TRIA treatments enhance advanced flowering, flower bud number, and blooming rate of bougainvillea. Similarly, photosynthetic rate, pigment content, quantum yield, and stomatal conductance increase with TRIA treatments. TRIA increase N, P, and K levels, total soluble solids (TSS) content and sugar and protein contents in Bougainvillea plants. Furthermore, more flowers, increase in bract weight, increase longevity, and less leaf abscission are found in TRIA treatment. Phenol and flavonoid contents, sucrose phosphate synthase (SPS) and antioxidant activities are also markedly increased with TRIA treatments. However, TRIA treatment reduces the ethylene production treated plants. There are positive correlations are observed between leaf TSS and flowering time and flower number, between leaf sugar content and bract weight, and between net photosynthesis and bract growth and dry matter production. It can be concluded that the foliar spray of TRIA stimulates growth, enhances flowering, and improves the quality of potted Bougainvillea plants. The present discussion covers the pivotal role of TRIA in plant growth and development, its mode of action and its significance in improving the productivity and quality of ornamental crops
