    No full text
Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death and disability among men and women in nearly all nations, including Malaysia. Lifestyle cardiovascular risk factors such as dietary habits, physical inactivity and smoking are considered fundamental risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Previous studies showed that the clustering of cardiovascular risk factors significantly increase the risk of developing cardiovascular events. Surveillance of these key modifiable risk factors, including its clustering and study of factors associated is needed to monitor the magnitude of the problem and effects of our interventions. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and factors associated with clustering of lifestyle cardiovascular risk factors among government servants in Kuala Terengganu, Malaysia. This was a cross-sectional study conducted between June and September 2013 among 121 government servants, selected using simple random sampling from all servants asymptomatic of cardiovascular disease at a multi-department government center in the capital of Terengganu. A questionnaire, which consisted of socio-demographic data, International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) and the dietary component of WHO STEPs, were used as the research tools. Clustering of lifestyle cardiovascular risk was defined as the presence of two or more of the lifestyle risk factors. Prevalence of clustering of lifestyle risks in this study was 57% (95% CI: 0.47, 0.67). Respondents with income less than RM3, 000 was significantly associated with clustering of lifestyle cardiovascular risks (p=0.032, OR 2.57, CI: 1.08, 6.07). This study provides evidence of clustering of lifestyle risks in the local asymptomatic healthy subjects. Therefore, comprehensive lifestyle interventions may be an effective strategy for controlling CVD risk factors, especially among those with low socioeconomic status where affordable interventions should be suggested. A more effective approach should be identified to promote affordable healthier diet and healthy lifestyle activities

This study was conducted to optimize the production of spray-dried white dragon fruit (Hylocereus undatus) powder using resistant maltodextrin as wall material. The inlet air temperature (140 °C, 150 °C and 160 °C), outlet temperature (75 °C, 80 °C and 85 °C) and resistant maltodextrin concentrations (20%, 25% and 30%) were tested as independent variables. Process yield, moisture content, water activity, solubility, hygroscopicity and bulk density of the powders were analysed as responses. Process yield significantly (p<0.05) increased with increasing inlet temperature and decreasing resistant maltodextrin concentration. Outlet temperature and resistant maltodextrin concentration significantly (p<0.05) reduced the moisture content and water activity of the white dragon fruit powder. Powder solubility and hygroscopicity significantly (p<0.05) increased as inlet and outlet temperature increased. Bulk density values decreased as inlet and outlet temperature increased. An optimum conditions for spray dried white dragon fruit powder that would produce high in yield, low moisture content, low water activity, high solubility, low hygroscopicity and high bulk density were found at 153 °C inlet temperature, 82 °C outlet temperature and 20% concentration

Honey is a broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent that seems to affect different bacteria in many different ways. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antibacterial activities of Trigona honey against P. aeruginosa and S. pyogenes. The effect of Trigona honey on P. aeruginosa and S. pyogenes was investigated using growth kinetics curve and real-time PCR. The growth kinetics of P. aeruginosa and S. pyogenes with 20% (w/v)(MIC) Trigona honey inhibited the growth cells number of P. aeruginosa and S. pyogenes compared with cells grown without honey. Treatment with 10% (w/v) (half-MIC) showed slightly decreased number of cells of P. aeruginosa and S. pyogenes over a period of 24 hours. Conversely, treatment with 5% (w/v) (quarter-MIC) was observed to have a similar untreated samples of P. aeruginosa and S. pyogenes. The RT-qPCR results showed that the expression of Sof and Sfbl decreased 7.82-fold and 9.23-fold respectively after exposure to 20% concentration of Trigona honey, whereas the expression of algD and oprF decreased 6.28-fold and 11.11-fold respectively after exposure to 20% concentration of Trigona honey. Trigona honey demonstrated the highest antibacterial activity against P. aeruginosa and S. pyogenes in vitro. Our results indicate that Trigona honey has the potential to be an effective inhibitor on virulence genes of P. aeruginosa and S. pyogenes

The main purpose of this research was to find the best growth curve for bacterial growth and the optimum temperature for the production of phytase from different potential phytase producing bacterial strains. A total of four strains used were originally isolated from hot springs in Malaysia, which were in Labis, Johor (L3), Dusun Tua, Selangor (RT), Ulu Legong, Kedah (A) and Ranau, Sabah (B9). Nutrient Agar (NA) and modified Phytase Screening Medium (PSM) liquid media were used for the culture enrichment while optimisation was carried out through batch culture method using a shake-flask scale. Strains growth and enzyme activity were quantitatively measured at different temperatures at (30°C and 37°C) values. Enzyme activity was determined according to the reaction of the phytase with its substrate (sodium phytate) and expressed in units of phytase activity (U/ mL). As for the overall, strain L3 (from Labis, Johor) exhibit promising rate of Pi released in the media at 30°C and 37°C, with optimum phytase activity values of 0.2047 U/mL and 0.2195 U/mL, respectively. The pH of the cultures was also measured, where it shows that strains grown in cultures at 37°C produced a higher phytase activity and resulting a lower reading of pH compared when grown at 30°C. All around, L3 strains has the lowest value of pH when cultured at 30°C and 37°C, with the pH value of 3.62 and 2.37, respectively. From the result obtained, the lower pH indicates the process of phytic acid degradation take place by the phytase in producing inorganic phosphate (Pi) due to the accumulation of organic acid. Since these bacterial strains were originally taken from Hot Springs, further analysis of temperature optimization using 55°C and even 60°C should be carried out. In the future, biochemical research and molecular identification may also be carried out to identify molecular identity in the strains
