Active Regional Leader, a Solution to ASEAN Challenges
The end of the WWll signified the new era and cooperation among
nations. New leaders inherited colonial leader’s initiation; migration issues,
colonial laws, economic and political challenges and border issues in their
new independent states. In some states, it ends up in violence. The
Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN has recorded spate of
conflicts in history, while the creation of the organization also bases on
cooperation which leads to security. In the recent years, non-traditional
security threats have made it complex and difficult for states to unilaterally
handle security issue. Although, each conflict is of different nature and
solution, majority of it reflects the political atmosphere and governmental
policies of the concerned states. The principle of non-interference and
ASEAN Way has restrained states to interfere, accuse or even to some
extend reluctant to make mere comment on the action of another member
state. Logically, ASEAN way encourage states to stick to her policy.
Although, the principle of non-interference is commonly found in almost
every organizational provisions, but the implementations are somehow
flexible or conditioned. Regional leader usually plays crucial role in
envisage stability of its region, while lack of regional leader can perpetuate
insecurity of a given region. The research is qualitative in nature; historical
and analytical methods are adopted in this paper; various useful materials
were relied upon throughout the process of this research. The result of the
paper argued that lack of clear regional leader had added to unresolved crises
and lack of decisive decision making in ASEAN. Even though, potential
leader was detected but lack able to play active role had made it like
nonexistence. As a result, there is no solution to old and current crises in the
region unless, regional leader become active. Finally, it recommended that
more needs to be done to make ASEAN Charter inclusive, while it can only
be realized if there is an active regional leader who will be ready to lead in
all matters concerning the region
