Peri‑urbanization and sustainability of a groundwater resource

    No full text
In developing countries, such as Indonesia, urbanization equates to industrialization. To actuate rapid economic development, the government generally puts in place strong policies to transform rural into industrialized peri-urban/urban areas. This triggers a number of environmental problems, one of which is the degradation of groundwater resources. This study aimed to investigate whether rural to urban transformation caused such environmental degradation. We selected the Majalaya District, a typical peri-urban area of Bandung Metropolitan, where rapid industrialization, mainly related to the textile industry, is taking place. This research adopted a water balance analysis applied to a shallow groundwater resource, contrasting supply with demand after 9 years of development (2005–2014). Data concerning water supply and demand were collected from relevant stakeholders, except for water consumption by vegetation and agricultural land use. For the latter, GIS and QuickBird image analysis were conducted. The results indicate that the industrial development in Majalaya has caused a groundwater crisis. A nine-year period of fast-growing number of industries has caused water defcit, which was also intensifed by the rate of land conversion

Weeds are consider as a significant important biological indicator of crop production resulting to yield loss of about 50%. Identification of weeds is very difficult from their morphological features. Despite weeds are the real challenge in farming in the developed, developing and underdeveloped countries. Nevertheless, weeds are also part of primary producers. Major constrain of crop production are weeds but they are also consider as important aspect of agricultural system in the world. Weeds are wild plants grow in an environment without the contribution of any human activities that have positive or negative impact to the environment. The aim of the study is to documents weeds of family Chenopodiaceae and agricultural crops grown in Taif region of Saudi Arabian kingdom in a mountain with an elevation level of (Area A = Al sail 1700 m, Area B = Al Wahat and Al Watit 1500 m, C = Leeih 1500 m, D = AL Gaim and Saisad 1500 m, F = E = Al Shafa 2200 m, F = AL Hada = 2000 m). The study was carried out based on environmental survey. Diverse number of weeds were identified and collected from the examined study area. Results revealed aggressive weeds species. Atriplex leucoclada, Chenopodium valria, Chenopodium album, Chenopodium murale, Chenopodium vulvaria, Chenopodium mavele, Dysphania ambrosioides and Lamb’s quarters with the total number of 1727. Chenopodium vulvariawas found with the highest number of species 553, follow by Chenopodium album 394 and the least is Lamb’s quarters 17. The study, similarly, documented 12 agricultural crops weeds from the study area; Portulaca oleracea, Raphanus sativus, Phoenix dactylifera, Mentha, Rosa damascena, Solanum melongena, Petroselinum sp, Zea mays, Cauliflower, Vitis spp, Brassica oleracea var. capitate and Cucurbita pepo. Findings from the study will aid management control and proposing research toward improved new weed control measures. Also has provided insight on purposeful weeds control in Taif Area

Evidently the deviations and corruption of ethics and thoughts we witness in the current reality of the Bangladeshi Community’ men and young men emanates from the absence of religious awareness with the family members. In addition to that reason, educated people send their children to the advanced and civilized schools which are considered to be distinguished regardless of these shools’ curricula and their commitment to the standards of ethics and values. This constitutes the problem of the research. The aim of this research is to find the approach of Rasulullah on whom Allah’s blessings and favours be and then implement it in the current reality to reform the Bangladeshi community. To preserve the young men’s ethical growth, the religious teachings must be practiced in the educational institutions. For that reason, the research adopted the descriptive and analytical methodology. The results of the research are as follows: the adherence to the Islamic culture and abandonment of the western culture will eradicate the different imported ethics and thoughts in the Bangladeshi Community. Also the community’s avoidance of the modern communication means and technology such as hand-phones, TV, pornographic magazines and many more that contain corruption and harm, realizes all goodness

Preliminary study on the expression of Estrogen Receptor Beta (ERβ) in colorectal carcinoma

    No full text
Colorectal carcinoma (CRC) has been an important public health problem. It stands at the top of oncologic pathology and it is the third most common cancer diagnosed in men and women in the world. Previous researchers found that the risk of developing CRC is slightly lower in women than in men. This suggested that the hormone estrogen plays a role in the development of CRC. Estrogen receptor beta (ERβ) is the predominant estrogen receptor (ER) in human colon. Therefore, it is reasonable to study ERβ status and the physiological significance of these ERβs in colorectal cancer. The objective of this study was to determine the expression of ERβ) in CRC patients and its relationship with the age and gender. ERβ expression in CRC was investigated by immunohistochemical staining of formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue sections from 10 CRCs patients. The association between ERβ expression with the age and gender was evaluated by using Pearson’s Chi Square Test. The results of the immunohistochemistry (IHC) demonstrated that out of these 10 cases studied, most of them (70%) were ERβ positive whereas three out of the cases (30%) were ERβ negative. About 57.14% (n=4) and 42.86% (n=3) were scored as 2+ and 3+ respectively. No significant association (P>0.05) was noted between ERβ expression with the patients’ age (P=0.778) and gender (P=0.490). In conclusion, many CRCs cases were positive for ERβ. These results highlighted on the presence of ERβ in CRC tissue samples and it is suggested to introduce them as a potential application for early diagnosis, staging, prognosis and treatment of CRC. Studies with a larger number of sample sizes using standardized tests are needed to understand the exact biological role of ERβ in CRC

The increasing prevalence of overweight and obesity is a crucial health problem worldwide. The negative impact of obesity eventually leads to decreased overall quality of life among the population. The aim of this study is to compare the quality of life (QoL) between body mass index categories and socio-demographic factors. This crosssectional study involved 500 adults (416 female and 84 males) aged 18 to 60 years recruited through convenience sampling technique at five randomly selected health clinics in Nagan Raya, Acheh in Indonesia. Anthropometric measurement comprised height (cm) and weight (kg), and BMI was calculated. The quality of life was measured by WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire in the Indonesian language and socio-demographic questionnaire were selfadministered. Independent T-test and one-way ANOVA test were used to compare the QoL domains score between BMI categories and socio-demographic factors. Overall, prevalence of underweight, normal weight, overweight and obese was 3.2%, 38.8%, 33.0% and 25.0%, respectively. QoL of respondents showed no significant difference between BMI categories. However, there is significant difference of QoL for all domains. Significant difference was observed between education levels with physical health domain (p <0.05); psychological health domains (p<0.001), type of occupations (p<0.001) and income levels (p<0.001); type of occupations with psychological health domains (p<0.001), social relationship domains (p<0.001) and environmental health domain (p<0.001). There is also significant difference between income levels with psychological health domain (p<0.05), social relationship (p<0.001) and environmental health domain (p<0.001). In conclusion, QoL is comparable between different categories of BMI among Nagan Raya, Acheh population and QoL is more affected by education level, type of occupation and income level. Therefore equitable education system should be emphasized as the effort in promoting QoL and therefore promoting better occupation and income levels among the Indonesian
