    No full text
The aim of this study is focused on airborne heavy metal pollution in the industrial area. Paka and Gebeng are chosen as the industrial area with eight points respectively were selected for this study within two monsoon seasons. The samples were analysed for heavy metals (Cd, As, Cu, Fe. Pb and Zn) by using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The results showed that the mean concentration value of As, Pb and Cd for Paka were 0.005 mg/L ± 0.001, 0.107 mg/L ± 0.088 and 0.010 mg/L ± 0.008 respectively. For Gebeng, the mean concentration value of As, Pb and Cd were 0.004 mg/L ± 0.002, 0.069 mg/L ± 0.059 and 0.005 mg/L ± 0.004 respectively. The results showed in the southwest monsoon, the mean concentration of heavy metals much higher than the target value by European Commission in Directive 2004/107/EC and Directive 2008/50/EC. The HQs and His of six metals are almost all lower than the safe level (=1) for children and adults, indicating no risks from these metals. On the whole, HI value decreased in the order of Fe>Cd>Pb>As>Zn>Cu. Fe and Cd exhibited higher values close to safe level, while Zn and Cu are lowest. The HI values of these metals for children are higher than those for adults. It could be concluded that the industrial and transportation emission were the major source of heavy metals in the atmosphere along the Paka and Gebeng industrial area. The human health risk assessment has proved to be a powerful tool to distinguish heavy metals and exposure routes of most concern in urban environments

An oriental fruit fly, Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel) is a global and economically important pest of agricultural food crops. However, basic life history information on this pest, which is vital for designing more effective control methods, currently still needs serious attention, particularly through the good rearing insect diet. Thus, this study aimed to determine and compare the growth and development of B. dorsalis reared on sweet potatoes (Ipomea batatas L.) and wheat germ based artificial diets under laboratory conditions. Four types of diets used were; orange sweet potato (OSP), purple sweet potato (PSP), white sweet potato (PSP) and wheat germ (WG) as a standard diet. Results showed that among the diets tested, the WG based diet displayed a significant difference (P<0.05) in the growth and development of B.dorsalis due to the higher nutritional value contained in the diet. Nonetheless, B. dorsalis growth and development on sweet potatoes based diet, particularly on OSP diet, showed similar results as WG based diet. There was a significant difference between a number of pupae obtained where WG recorded the highest number of pupae (17.33±0.33) followed by OSP (9.00±0.577), PSP (9.00 ±0.33) and WSP (8.00 ± 0.577). However, no significant difference was shown among the OSP, PSP and WSP based diets particularly on the number of pupae, the percentage of pupae, adult survival and duration from egg to adult. As a conclusion, this study showed that sweet potatoes can be used as an alternative economic source of artificial diets for B. dorsalis mass-rearing program in laboratory

    No full text
Carbohydrate binding modules (CBMs) are discrete contiguous amino acid sequence within a carbohydrate-active enzyme which are non-catalytic modules that primarily exist to target parent enzyme to its substrate for efficient hydrolysis. Although many sialidase proteins have been identified from various pathogenic bacteria, only a few enzymes are commercially available which have been used for chemoenzymatic syntheses and therapeutics application. A gene encoding carbohydrate binding module (CBM) from Vibrio cholerae Non-O1 sialidase has been successfully cloned in E. coli BL21 (DE3). The CBM encodes for 174 amino acids from an open reading frame of 522 bp nucleotide sequences. The gene was successfully expressed solubly at 18˚C when induced with 1mM IPTG. Maximum protein expression was observed at 20 hours after post-induction time. For purification technique, an anionic denaturing detergent method was used using SDS and Sarkosyl with gradient affinity elution with imidazole. SDSPAGE analysis showed that the purified CBM protein exhibited a single band with molecular weight of 40 kDa. Biochemical characterization of the protein displayed optimum pH at 5.5 in 100 mM citrate buffer with the highest Tm value of 45.5 ºC. The protein was showed stable between pH 5.5-6.2 and able to retain its activity from 27-56 ˚C. From the analysis of metal ions and reagents, addition of Mn2+, Mg2+, 1% SDS, 1 M urea and 1% Triton managed to increase protein melting temperature to 59 ºC and 58.5 ºC respectively

Influencing factors on middle east tourism demand to Malaysia: evidence from quantile regression approach

    No full text
This research examines the impact of global oil price, exchange rate and tourism prices on Malaysia’s demand for Middle East tourist arrival using monthly quantile analysis from 1995 to 2017, which focusing on 3 major Middle East countries tourism demand to Malaysia (Saudi Arabia, Iran and United Arab Emirates). The estimated of the quantile regression reveals that, global oil price fluctuation has affected on Middle East tourist arrival to Malaysia. First, we attempt the quantile cointgeration test and found that, there is a quantile and combine cointegration effects between the estimated series. Also, the effect of oil prices in the upper 50th and 75th quantiles provinces is lower than those in other quantile provinces. However, the influences of exchange rate and tourism price in the lower 25th and 50th provinces are stronger than those in other quantile provinces. The results therefore show clearly that, global energy prices have a positive impact; when the exchange rate and tourism price in quantile, the influence are more towards an inverse relationship

    No full text
This paper explains the development of a comprehensive archery performance monitoring software which consisted of three camera views and five body sensors. The five body sensors evaluate biomechanical related variables of flexor and extensor muscle activity, heart rate, postural sway and bow movement during archery performance. The three camera views with the five body sensors are integrated into a single computer application which enables the user to view all the data in a single user interface. The five body sensors' data are displayed in a numerical and graphical form in real time. The information transmitted by the body sensors are computed with an embedded algorithm that automatically transforms the summary of the athlete's biomechanical performance and displays in the application interface. This performance will be later compared to the pre-computed psycho fitness performance from the prefilled data into the application. All the data; camera views, body sensors; performance-computations; are recorded for further analysis by a sports scientist. Our developed application serves as a powerful tool for assisting the coach and athletes to observe and identify any wrong technique employ during training which gives room for correction and reevaluation to improve overall performance in the sport of archery

The modelling of tropical weather effects on ultra-high frequency (UHF) radio signals using SmartPLS

    No full text
The interference occurs in radio signals transmission in many communication technologies are attributed to weather variations as well as other environmental factors. This work evaluates some atmospheric variables that have a dominating impact on temporal signal strength fluctuations. The Received Power Level (RPL) of Ultra High Frequency (UHF) communication signals (1800 MHz and 2160 MHz) and three tropical weather predictors (humidity, temperature and wind) were collected using spectrum analyser (KEYSIGHT N9915A) and weather station (Vantage Pro 2) respectively for 24 hours in rainy days. SmartPLS 3.2.6 was used to determine the strongest predictors influence the RPL for UHF frequency. It has been found that changes in weather conditions have affected the signal in which all weather predictors provide a significant relationship to the signal where R2 (coefficient of determination) value is 0.314 for frequency 1800 MHz and 0.254 for frequency 2160 MHz. The findings also show that humidity, temperature and wind are anticorrelations to RPL. However, humidity is found to be the strongest predictor influences the RPL of communication signals for frequency 1800 MHz (β= -0.449, p=0.000). This model may benefit many sectors such as telecommunication service provider, radio and TV transmission, radio astronomy study, Electromagnetic (EM) researcher and satellite broadcasting
