Carer Experience with Children with Down Syndrome

    No full text
This paper explores the experiences and coping approaches of Down syndrome carers resulting from in-depth interviews among five families with children with Down syndrome in Kuala Terengganu. The purpose of the interviews was to examine family carers’ experiences and get in touch with the child. The paper specifically focuses on the issues of tolerance, sacrifice and attention in handling such children and coping with adaptation to the role of carer. The findings reveal that for the majority of family carers, their experience was one of constant searching for support and information. The anxiety and frustration associated with unpredictable and irregular support and a lack of information were major sources of concern for the carers in the study. However, carers were found to use a number of positive and negative coping approaches to deal with the pressure associated with their caregiving role. The study also concluded that the benefits of knowing a person with Down syndrome may extend beyond the immediate family members and into the community

This study was conducted to evaluate the potential effects of fish waste extract on the growth, yield and quality of cucumber which is a popular cucurbitaceae fruit vegetable. Different treatments were arranged according with CRD layouts with five replicates for each treatment. All the six (6) treatments viz; control, NPK, 10 ml, 20 ml, 40 ml and 50 ml of fish waste extract were applied to the potting media. The results showed that the application of 20 ml of fish waste extract increased the vine length, number of leaf, chlorophyll content (SPAD), stomatal conductance and leaf TSS content of cucumber compared to other treatments and control. Treatment with 50 mL of fish waste extract produced the highest leaf area. The chlorophyll concentration, carotene content, chlorophyll fluorescence and photosynthetic yield also positively affected with fish waste extracts. It was also found that number of flower, number of fruit, and weight of individual fruit of cucumber also significantly increased by fish waste extracts. It can be concluded that 20 ml fish waste extract was the best treatment for improving the growth, yield and quality of cucumber. Foliar application of fish waste effluent on Cucurbitaceae vegetables is merit to further study

Foot Reflexology Therapy for Non-Specific Low Back Pain Condition : A Protocol For a Randomized Controlled Trial

    No full text
Introduction Non-specific low back pain is one of the most common physical ailments affecting millions of people worldwide. This condition constitutes a significant public health problem and was listed as a prevalent health complaint in most societies. Even though there are many anecdotal claims for reflexology in the treatment of various conditions such as a migraine, arthritis and multiple sclerosis, but very little clinical evidence exists for reflexology on the management of low back pain per se. This study aims to evaluate the effects of foot reflexology therapy as an adjunctive treatment to the Malaysian low back pain standard care in relieving pain and promoting health-related quality of life among people with non-specific low back pain. Methods This is a parallel randomized controlled trial with pre and post-treatment study design. The study setting for the intervention located at Penawar Reflexology Center, Kuala Terengganu, Malaysia. A total of 100 participants with non-specific low back pain will be allocated to one of two groups, using a randomization computer program of Research Randomizer. The control group will receive low back pain standard care, while the intervention group will receive standard care plus eight sessions of foot reflexology therapy. The pain intensity and health-related quality of life scores will be measured using Visual Analogue Scale and Euro-quality of life scale respectively in both groups. The study was approved by the Human Research Ethics Committee of University Sultan Zainal Abidin (UHREC/2016/2/011). The study protocol was registered at ClinicalTrials.gov, with the ID number of NCT02887430. Measurements Outcome measures will be undertaken at pre-intervention (week 1), post-intervention (week 6) and follow-up (week 10). Conclusions This will be the first trial to compare the foot reflexology therapy with control group among people who medically diagnosed with non-specific low back pain in Malaysia. The result of this study will contribute to better management of this population, especially for Malaysia healthcare setting

A Review on the Factors Affecting the Learning of Arabic Macro-Skills Among Malay Undergraduate Students

    No full text
This research intends to review a number of studies on the factors which might have an influence on the learning of Arabic as second language macro-skills (reading, writing, listening, and speaking) among Malay undergraduate students. The reviewed articles are categorised into four groups: literature related to factors affecting the speaking skills, literature related to factors affecting the writing skills, literature related to factors affecting the listening skills, and literature related to factors affecting the reading skills. However, different empirical studies reviewed confirm many factors have significant correlations with the students' performances in learning Arabic language macro-skills. Such factors are Malay students' attitude towards the Arabic language; the use of Arabic for communication purposes; lack of confidence and teaching techniques. However, some studies account different results. This mixture of results regenerates from diversities in methodology, variables used and the time of the study

Development of Spatial Distribution Model using GIS to Identify Social Support Index Among Drug-Abuse Inmates

    No full text
This study was to identify the spatial distribution of Social Support Index (SSI) among drug-abuse inmates throughout Peninsular Malaysia. Factor Analysis (FA) and Discriminant Analysis (DA) were applied to analyses the level of social support (SS) among drug-abuse inmates and develop the spatial model using Geographic Information System (GIS). Five significant index categories were generated from FA: excellent, good, moderate, low and poor Quality of Life Index (QoLi) and the nine of SS variables are expected to be derived from family, friends and other social factor. DA showed each category differed from others in terms of different compositions, stepwise backward and forward modes gave 99.75% correct classification. GIS analysis show the distribution of SSI categorized on family and friends factor were moderately for where the prisoners came. Besides that, Perlis classified as low-level index and Melaka as high-level index of other social factor. The distribution model of SSI in moderately-level showed Jelebu, Sungai Petani, Pengkalan Chepa and Simpang Renggang as the better SS factor to quality of life compared to the Penor, Pahang. The procedures of FA, DA and GIS were used in this study proved the source apportionment of SS and QoLi among drug-abuse inmates in Peninsular Malaysian prisons

The aim of this study is to select the best location for astronomical observations sites using Multi Criteria Decision Analysis integrated with Geographical Information System (GIS). To solve these problems, four factors were determined which are elevation or slope, road network, population density and land used. These factors were divided into two categories namely geographical and anthropogenic criteria. The factors were evaluated using Analytical Hierarchy Process technique and the weights of variables were determined. The study matched the layer on the optical observatory and moon sighting sites. As the result, this study showed the most suitable areas were located extensively in eastern and southern part of Peninsular Malaysia. However, the final decision of this study, site testing measurement will be required in these preliminarily selected areas

Improving unprecedented restlessness as the new strong indicator of rice crisis at national level

    No full text
Rice crisis that can happen sooner or later will give accurate and very important information about the predicted time of crisis in Indonesia. This paper was performed to improve and develop a new rice crisis indicator. The tested hypothesis i.e. unprecedented restlessness (UR) is the strong indicator of rice crisis. UR is tested massively in nineteen countries. This research has successfully identified that UR is a strong indicator for rice crisis at Asia level. Despite in the previous research, UR has passed two statistic tests namely rg and Q. However, both tests need to fulfill the success of probability (SP) and constraint probability (CP) in order to provide strong indicator properties. Thus, it is critical to assess the extent to which UR meets the above two criteria. This paper recommends UR can be used to assess the effectiveness of an agricultural plan in order to avoid rice crisis
