Effectiveness of an online preparatory quiz in enhancing basic clinical skills in an introductory clinical skills course

    No full text
Background: Research shows e-learning is effective in supporting clinical education. However, the method for its usage to improve basic clinical skills needs further guidance and evidence. Purpose: To evaluate the benefits of a preparatory online quiz on the performance of basic clinical skills in medical students. Methods: A multimodality online platform was created to assist student to learn basic clinical skills in an introductory clinical course. A comprehensive quit on clinical skills was included as one of the materials. A group of 60 students, newly-entered to clinical year session in September 2018 was ramdomized to two groups of 30 students. One group was instructed to do the online preparatory quiz prior to the start of the course. At the end of the two weeks course, all students were in evaluated individually on their basic clinical skills (BCS). t-test was applied to compare mean marks of the groups. Comparison was also made between groups which completed the quiz and the group which did not complete or attempt the quiz. Results: 26 out of 30 students attempted the online quiz, however only 21 completed it. Mean (SD) marks for BCS for attempted group was 61% (9.59) which was higher than non-attempt group marks of 57.6% (7.84). but the difference was not significant (P=0.939). However, when the students were regrouped to completed and non-completed, mean marks were 62.3% (8.65) for completed and 54.8% (8.64) for incomplete and their difference were significant (P=0.005). Conclusion: E-learning with a preparatory online quiz improved clinical skills in students with good participation in the e-learning and should be incorporated in undergraduate medical education

The Relationship between Big Five Personality Traits and Academic Performance in Medical Students

    No full text
It is a learned fact that personality is an integration of individuals' characteristics that benefits them to stay successful in their career path. ln the field of education the educators, researchers, and psychologists are on the constant explosion of the tightfisted set of variables that predicts patterns of students' behaviors and their association with academic achievement. Thus the current study aimed done at finding about the relationship between 'Big Five' personality traits and academic achievement of undergraduate medical students. The total sample of 122 from year one and two medical students of Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin, Malaysia was involved in the study. All personality traits positively and significantly predicted students overall grade. Of all traits, Openness and Neuroticism were positively related to student's academic achievement than agreeableness, and conscientiousness and are more important predictors of overall grade of the students. Extraversion was positively related (r =.150) but not statistically significant. The present results provide evidence supporting the Relationship between Personality Traits and Academic Performance in medical students

Performance analysis of Software Defined Network (SDN) in link failure scenario

    No full text
The proliferation and advancement in network technologies has brought unprecedented opportunities towards the development of Software Defined Network (SDN) which presents an alternative network architecture that separates data forwarding and control functions to simplify global network management. As SDN is developed to handle largescale network, addressing network dynamics such as link failure remains challenging. Link failure in SDN could still cause major performance disruption which can lead to severe performance degradation for underlying applications. Therefore, this paper analyses several link failure circumstances in SDN and show how it reacts to such situations. As SDN decouples data and control planes, routing algorithm is determined by its controller. In this paper, routing algorithm is used to control the behaviour of the network traffic when one or more links are disconnected. Ryu controller which is one of the open controllers in SDN, acts as a brain to adapt how traffic is controlled for the whole network. Performance of SDN in different network topologies is compared in terms of throughput and Round-TripTime (RTT) which shows desirable SDN performanc

A novel 3-D chaotic system with line equilibrium: dynamical analysis, coexisting attractors, offset boosting control and circuit design

    No full text
A 3-D new chaotic system with five nonlinearities is proposed in this paper. A novel feature of our chaotic system is that there is no linear term in it. We also show that the chaotic system consists of equilibrium points on the z-axis (line equilibrium) as well as two equilibrium points on the (x, y)-plane. The dynamical properties of the new chaotic system are described in terms of phase portraits, bifurcation diagram, Lyapunov exponents, coexisting attractors, coexisting bifurcation and offset boosting control. Finally, an electronic circuit realization of the new chaotic system is presented in detail to confirm the feasibility of the theoretical chaotic model

Affinity replica selection in distributed systems

    No full text
Replication is one of the key techniques used in distributed systems to improve high data availability, data access performance and data reliability. To optimize the maximum benefits from file replication, a systems that includes replicas need a strategy for selecting and accessing suitable replicas. A replica selection strategy determines the available replicas and chooses the most access files. In most of these access frequency based solutions or popularity of files are assuming that files are independent of each other. In contrast, distributed systems such as peer-to-peer file sharing, and mobile database, files may be dependent or correlated to one another. Thus, this paper focused on the combination of popularity and affinity files as the most important parameters in selecting replicas in distributed environments. Herein, a replica selection is proposed focusing on popular files and affinity files. The idea is to improve data availability in distributed data replica selection strategy. A P2P simulator, PeerSim, is used to evaluate the performance of the dynamic replica selection strategy. The simulation results provided a proof that the proposed affinity replica selection has contributed towards a new dimension of replica selection strategy that incorporates the affinity and popularity of file replicas in distributed systems

A fatal case of non- typhoidal salmonella pyogenic pericardial effusion in an immunocompetent adolescent

    No full text
Salmonella infection is common in tropical countries including Malaysia. It is invasive in immunocompromised and those of extreme ages. It typically presents with gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal pain or vomiting. Extra-intestinal manifestations are seen in 30% of salmonellosis cases. These atypical manifestation leads to difficulty and delay diagnosis thus poorer outcome. Pericardium involvement is estimated to be less than 2% of all cases and has mortality rate as high as 50%1 . As high as 70% of pericarditis cases were identified to be immunosuppressed2 ; these include chronic immunosuppressant usage, autoimmune disease, end stage renal failure, malignancy and etc. Herein, we report a fatal case of pyogenic pericardial effusion by Salmonella enteritidis in an immunocompetent adolescent
