Literature and gender equality as national sustainable goals

    No full text
Very often, public expresses dissatisfaction over the lack of respect for women. Yet, this poses an important question– what has been done at improving the local situation where women are cheated, their rights are questioned and left behind? Malaysia at present, is ranked six out of ten based on Social Sustainability Index (SSI) 2016, surpassing an alert level. While the government remains consistent in its effort to distribute gender equality, the promotion of social sustainability issues, particularly in the areas of gender equality, can further be improved upon. This study, as such, aims to rationalise the Ministry of Education’s recent effort of bringing back literary appreciation into schools in general in its hopes to achieve a sustainable living space and developing the nation’s civilizational growth. Besides that, the study also associates a correlation between literature-inclusion in classrooms and encouraging the vocalisation of opportunities and dreams, where the lack of literary appreciation in the recent past shows vulnerability and lack of respect for both genders. Later, it provides a discussion over the roles of literature as an agent of creating awareness for gender equality in classrooms. Without using any particular research design, this study provides a discussion of initiatives at providing the basis of including literature as part of the national language policy and planning. This study on its inclusion in classrooms reiterates past research on encouraging results and high morale among the school teachers and the public as due to its use in classrooms

Hemianthus micranthemoides and Lileaopsis brasiliensis are nowadays sold in the form of tissue culture production by aquaria and ornamental trade in Malaysia. However, there is no to limited report about in vitro micropropagation of both aquarium plants. In this study, an experimental procedure for micropropagation of both plants was documented. The propagation were done in Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium with eight combination of different concentration of 6-Benzylaminopurine with Naphteneacetic acid (BAP-NAA) and 1-phenyl-3-1,2,3- thiadizol-5-yl urea with Naphteneacetic acid (TDZ-NAA) following the rooting technique for 42 days. All treatments for 1 L MS medium were regulated to pH 5.7 to 5.8 and added with sucrose (30 g/L) and phytagel (2.5 g/L). All combination treatments had induced rooting. There was a significance different in the shoot regeneration of H. micranthemoides in all treatment (95% confidence level, F = 13.907, n = 240, p = 0.000), on the contrary there was no different were observed in shoot regeneration of L. brasiliensis treatment. Overall, all treatment of TDZNAA were significantly higher in the shoot regeneration than those in BAP-NAA treatment. Particularly the T7 (TDZ-NAA, 0.075: 0.1 mg/L) given highest result in diameter (1.626±0.213 cm) and area (1.724±0.308 cm2) of shoot clumps in H. micranthemoides, and formation of shoots (51.5±4.95), nodes (20.0±2.83) and roots (45.5±13.4) in L. brasiliensis. Hardening of in vitro cultured plantlets was done in aquatic laboratory. All of the plants survived and transferred into aquarium. This study has provided beneficial information in further micropropagation protocol for the mass production of both aquarium plants

Mustafa Lutfi Manfalouti, a social reform writer, has many articles and books. One of the writer’s famous books is ‘Al- nazarat’ in which he dealt with various topics in the criticism of several aspects of life. In this book, the author focused on reality, imagination, and illustrations because he is critical in the choice of adjectives and their nouns. Thus, the author provides detailed descriptions and uses narrative techniques that express his full coverage of events such as al- ru’yah min khalf, al- ru’yah al- Ilahiyyah, and al- ru’yah ma’. The author relies on the choice of feminine gender for expressions in tragic stories, focusing on pessimism and criticism towards painful social realities, using various stories on his extensive historical background, and establishing the reader's principle of contentment and self- respect. The author also addresses the people concerned in most of his reformist speeches, believing that they have original and good qualities. This study describes Manfalouti’s style as observed by the researcher through reading the various stories in the author’s books and articles. The themes are briefly described and categorized according to the appropriate contexts

    Genetics of primary congenital glaucoma

    No full text
Primary Congenital Glaucoma (PCG) is a major risk factor for vision loss in children, which is manifested from birth to three years of age. In PCG the ocular developmental defects of the trabecular meshwork (TM) and front chamber position of eye lead to the blockage of aqueous loss and consequently an increased intraocular pressure (IOP). This results in photophobia, corneal clouding, optic nerve damage, and ultimately permanent loss of vision occurs. The incidence of PCG varies geographically. In Eastern culture, consanguineous marriages may play a role in a higher rate of PCG. Four loci of GLC3A, GLC3B, GLC3C, and 14q24.2-q24.3 to be linked to this ocular condition have been identified. Currently, mutations in two genes i.e.CYP1B1 at GLC3A locus, which encodes cytochrome P4501B1, and LTBP2 at GLC3D locus, which encodes LTBP2is known to cause PCG.CYP1B1 comprises of 3 exons encoding a 543 amino acid protein. CYPIBI is a gene that belongs to the cytochrome P450 family of enzymes. The cytochrome P450 proteins are monooxygenases that catalyse many reactions involved in the synthesis of cholesterol, steroids, other lipids, and drug metabolism. A lot of mutations have been reported in CYP1B1, which results in the form of PCG

Pink to blue: A preventable pacifier death

    No full text
Pacifier usage in paediatric age group, especially during the infancy stage, is common. The practice is widespread as it soothes the child and further supported by the fact that, it may relieve the pain and reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Acute fatal complications are rare, but chronic complications are common. Fatal, life-threatening sequelae includes upper airway obstruction. We report a case of fatal upper airway obstruction due to pacifier in a 16-month-old baby boy. Early emergency airway management is crucial at the pre-hospital level as delays in securing a patent airway will end up with hypoxia and respiratory arrest. Failure to anticipate and initiate appropriate early interventions contribute to preventable death. Hence, it is recommended that appropriate acute airway management includes surgical airway at primary care should be taught regularly to ensure that all emergency health care providers are competent in managing airway obstruction. We want to suggest that pacifiers use in child nursery without closed supervision from baby sitter shall be prohibited
