Physicochemical analysis and antioxidant activity of honey from three Malaysian stingless bees species

    No full text
This study investigates physicochemical and antioxidant activity of raw and honey extract from three different species of Malaysian stingless bees. The methanol extract of commonly found Heterotrigona itama (EHI), Tetratgonula laeviceps (ETL) and Geniotrigona thoracica (EGT) was tested for their total flavonoid, total phenolic, moisture, ash, fat, protein and carbohydrate. Antioxidant activity through DPPH radical scavenging activity was also determined. Nutritional analysis of raw honey showed a comparable result. Analysis of total flavonoid and total phenolic for honey extract showed a significant difference between three species. In contrast, raw honeys did not show any significant differences between species. The antioxidant testing showed that the three honeys does not possess good antioxidant activity with inhibition lower than 50%. ETL showed the highest inhibition with IC50 of 37.8%, followed by EHI with 24.3% and EGT with 9.8% of inhibition, respectively. Thin layer chromatography analysis revealed the content of phenolic and flavonoids in all tested honey. The three extracts displayed a characteristic profile and vary from each other. This study revealed that bee species is important in determination of honey’s quality

This study aims to identify the most contributed factors in Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS) questionnaire among children in Shelter Care Institutions in Terengganu Malaysia. The sample consists of 234 respondents from six institutions by using 21-items version of the DASS-21 questionnaire. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was used to study the most essential contributed factor in the questionnaire. The initial PCA show five variables factors out of 21-item as the most significant for factors with a considerable eigen value > 1. The result from factor loading after varimax rotation show that VF1 has five variables, VF2 and VF3 has four variables, VF4 has two variables while VF5 has three variables. We suggest that the further study might be required to assess the status among gender and level of academic

Infrastructure project financing through sukuk as an alternative to conventional bond financing

    No full text
The infrastructure development is one of the vital elements in achieving the goals of the country development. When infrastructure and other public facilities are available, basic human needs can be met accurately. Financing infrastructure has been the main concern of many countries and there is a very little foreign direct investment in developing nations for many reasons. These nations apply for loans from international institutions which are expensive with many attached conditions. Similarly, evidence have shown from Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and Malaysia that the adoption of sukuk is an assured way toward infrastructural development of a country. For this reason, many authors perceived sukuk as alternative to conventional bond for infrastructure projects and other essential needs for countries to develop. Therefore, this study is motivated by the infrastructural development which has taken place in those countries that have been practising/using sukuk as tool for infrastructure development. This innovation will increase a lot of strategic advantage and economic development of countries by utilizing sukuk as an alternative source of funding. Using sukuk as infrastructural development’s tool will also assist countries that find it difficult to fulfil the requirement for the conventional bond

Speaking English language in front of the public is sometimes a daunting task to many people, including students of universities. Those who are capable of delivering a sound presentation in English language will definitely have some advantages for future employment and professions. This research addresses issues related to English public speaking at the university by setting three objectives. Firstly, it seeks undergraduate students’ opinions of their English public speaking performance. Secondly, to get insights on the students’ preferred instructors in teaching English public speaking and thirdly to get their opinions on preferred techniques or methods in teaching English public speaking. This research employed qualitative approach by conducting interviews to 25 students from 9 faculties at Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA), Malaysia. The findings revealed that majority of the students opined that their performance in English public speaking was rather poor and moderate. Only a small section of students thought that their performance was fairly good. Some contributing factors to the poor performance of their English public speaking were due to lack of confidence, lack of English grammar and vocabularies. It was also revealed that the students preferred having instructors who were friendly, and had a high sense of humor. In relation to teaching methods or techniques, the research revealed that the students preferred to have practices in a nonthreatening environment with some meaningful activities such as video shows, drama, sketch or English games that could stimulate a conducive and fun learning environment

Adherence has an important role in therapy management in patients with type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. This research is to identify and analyze factors related to medication adherence. The design used in this study was a descriptive-analytic design with a cross-sectional approach. The population is type 2 Diabetes Mellitus sufferers of Prolanis Group in Primary Health Care Facilities in the Ponorogo Regency. A sample of 180 respondents was taken by purposive sampling technique. Variable X includes age, gender, education, occupation, income, and length of suffering. Variable Y was medication compliance with type 2 Diabetes Mellitus patients. Data collection used a Morisky Medication Adherence (MMAS-8) questionnaire and was analyzed using the Chi-Square test with a significant level of α <0.05. From the results of the study, it was found that the factors of age, sex, education, employment, income and duration of suffering had a significant relationship with medication adherence for patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is expected that health services develop family and communitybased service management. Researchers are further advised to develop programs to improve medication adherence
