Reflection on researching EFL reading in academic context

    No full text
For many years a great deal of research on reading strategies has mainly focused on the cognitive and linguistic aspects. The main criticism against these two aspects of language learning is that they overlooked the social context of learning to a great extent. The cognitive and the linguistic frameworks are not comprehensive enough in understanding the process of reading especially among the EFL learners. This paper starts with some backgrounds on academic reading experiences of EFL learners, and researching reading within the sociocultural context. Then it discusses some the challenges of methodological and ethical issues in employing a qualitative to research in the area of reading. This paper covers issues related to two qualitative methods of data collection, reading diary and interview. It concludes that the challenging methodological issues in researching academic reading comprehension require cautious consideration throughout the research process. It recommends that new ethics guidelines be developed by ethics board members for the reference of researchers who embark on research in this area

In order to achieve the study goals, a pre-post test in Islamic education and motivation measurement was applied. The results showed a significant difference in the performance of students on the achievement test in Islamic education, and the motivation measurement due to the teaching method in favor of learning blending. The results also showed a significant difference between the degrees of students with high achievement on the test compared with the degrees of students with moderate and low achievement, and for those with high educational attainment. According to these findings, the study recommended activating the blended learning strategies in teaching of Islamic education, especially in the future shifting towards the digital curricula

    No full text
Employees who have health problems are often less productive at work. Example of health behaviours are considered costly and risky are smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, poor diet, and lack of physical activity. To control costs and improve health, employers seek solutions that will enhance employee health habits and increase the appropriateness or coordination of their health care. Generation X of Malaysia’s population is expected to increase to 5.6 million, accounting for 15% per cent of the total population in Malaysia. Given the size of these generations, their continued health into older age is essential to ensure the stability of Malaysia’s workforce and economy. Studies on the influence of social support on the health-promoting of employees who maintain close contact with their family and friends associated themselves with better satisfaction. The aims of this study are to assess the predictors of social support on health-promoting behaviour and to develop a health-promoting behaviour index (HPBi) in a representative population. The study was designed as a questionnaire-based, cross-sectional analysis. A sample of 385 respondents comprising of generation X’ers from Kelantan and Terengganu were involved in this study. This study intends to show the effectiveness of Factor Analysis (FA) and Multiple Linear Regression (MLR) for assessing health-promoting behaviour indicator sources. The method of FA has identified five significant index categories- Excellent, Good, Moderate, Low and poor HPBi were generated from FA

    No full text
Global issues are considered to be an up-to-date branch in the field of language teaching. By integrating global issues in classroom instruction, students will be exposed to a global perspective. Basically, global education is imperative to the development of skills, knowledge, and attitudes of students who need to recognize a lot of things around them through the global education approach while studying English in classrooms. This paper reviewed the importance of integrating education which focuses on global issues and problems into ELT as a means of guiding students to have knowledge about world issues and becoming responsible world citizens. The literature reveals that most academic programmes nowadays include global education which is regarded as an important feature of their official curriculum. Additionally, teachers' education about environmental problems should be improved to increase students' awareness and knowledge about local and global environmental issues. Due to the importance of teaching global issues, it is recommended that foreign-language instructors integrate global issues and global education into their teaching in a variety of ways

Health risk assessment of heavy metals via dietary intake of foodstuffs from the Multan, Pakistan

    No full text
Naturally occurring heavy metals are becoming concentrated as a result of human activities such as factory wastes, chemicals releasing from the automobiles, and several other sources toxic to human. These activities posed heavy metal pollution to irrigated water, soil, and vegetables. These metals are not digested into human body and stores in the body tissues leading to the metabolic disorders through the food chain. To assess these health risks, it is essential to quantify the heavy metals in the vegetables. This study was conducted to investigate heavy metals (Zn, Ca, and Mg) concentrations in different parts (roots, stems, leaves, and fruits) of tomato plant (Lycopersicon esculentum), sampled from three different locations of Multan district. Roots, leaves, stems, and fruits were oven dried at 110˚C and 2 g of each sample was digested with 5 ml of concentrated nitric acid (Merck). These samples were then subjected to atomic absorption spectrometry (Hitachi Model A-1800) for analysis of these metals. The results of this study revealed that the concentration of metals in L. esculentum increased in the order of Ca > Mg > Zn. By the comparison of all three metals accumulated in different parts of L. esculentum, we concluded that Ca and Mg are present in higher concentration with the exception of zinc which has rather low toxicity but a severe impact on human health. Results of our scenario show that HRI value for Zn is greater than 1 so it poses potential risks to human health

The purpose of the present study was to examine the impact of TaskBased Instruction (TBI) on Tabuk University EFL students' speaking skills and usage of tasks. The experimental design was applied to investigate the impact of TBI on students' speaking skills and uses of the tasks. Two classes were purposely selected for the study based on their mean score registered at first-semester English subject result and assigned as control and experimental groups. Both groups were given speaking pre-tests at the beginning of the study. The experimental group was taught through TBI for four weeks while the control group studied the same unit in a conventional way in which TBI was not implemented. After four weeks of implementing the program for two periods of 50 minutes a week, students were given the speaking test as a post-test similar to the pre-test to assess the effect of the program on participants' speaking skills before and after the implementation. In addition, students responded to a questionnaire after the post test. Paired T-test was employed to investigate if the results of the tests were statistically significant or not. The results of the tests (t=7.605, p<0.05) showed that the experimental group had better score gains over the control group as a result of applying Task-Based Instruction on their speaking skills. Furthermore, the data collected from the questionnaire proved that students’ usage of tasks was also encouraging to say that tasks were interesting for students. The results of the current study showed that TBI had a positive impact on students' speaking skills and uses of tasks

Primary differential diagnoses include meningoangiomatosis and neurocutaneous melanosis. Meningoangiomatosis is a rare, benign disease characterized by leptomeningeal calcifications and hamartomatous proliferation of meningeal cells along the leptomeninges and cortex. In neurocutaneous melanosis, on the other hand, multiple cutaneous nevi will be seen. Imaging reveals melanin deposits within the parenchyma and leptomeninges; these deposits appear similar to those in SS
