On August 23, 2024, first-year Ursinus College students participated in a common CIE event in Myrin Library. Teams of students, assigned to a particular section of Library stacks, searched for book titles that could be combined in meaningful ways. These combinations were then written and transferred to the end of each stack. Using Cache Files to Improve the Efficiency of the UCGretina Simulation Code
UCGretina is a program that is used to simulate the Gretina gamma-ray tracking array used in experiments at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) to collect gamma rays produced in reactions such as proton scattering. This is done by generating a simulation of the beam particles used and sending them into a simulated recreation that mimics the experimental environment. My job this summer was to tackle a major issue that the program had which is the speed or efficiency at which it ran. The main issue was that it would take days for certain simulation sets to run which were necessary to carry out the work being done, which was not very efficient. I tackled this issue through the implementation of a cache file system within the code to store the tracking information for particles simulated so that they could be reused
Effects of DNA Interactions on the Assembly and Stability of Oligonucleotide-Lipid Nanoparticles
Lipid micelles can be used to deliver hydrophobic pharmaceuticals in the bloodstream; however, micelles are inherently unstable because they require a large concentration of lipid to form, and they interact with serum proteins in the blood, causing them to disassemble. To prevent destabilization, we have covalently modified lipid micelles with DNA, with the goal of developing a micelle-based drug delivery system
Synthesis and Analysis of 7-Nitroso-4-Methylcoumarin as a Reactivity-Based Probe
Reactivity-based probes are commonly used in various imaging types to detect analytes or biomolecules such as proteins of interest. By tagging the molecule of interest, the probe will elicit either a fluorogenic or colorimetric response, allowing for sensitive visualization using microscopy. Current reactivity-based probes, while useful, are not without their limitations, inviting efforts to develop new chemical tools with improved solubility, selectivity, biocompatibility, and photophysical properties and allowing for better detection of molecules of interest. This research will focus on testing the reactivity and properties of a nitroso-containing fluorophore to determine its possible applications. Here, various types of reactions will be investigated as possible reaction motifs that may quickly and efficiently produce a change in the fluorophore\u27s properties. The reaction profiles and efficiencies will be explored, and the properties of the products will then be analyzed. Ultimately, this project will provide an understanding of the nitroso group’s ability to produce new reaction-based detection tools
Computer Scientists in the Media
My research was about analyzing how computer scientists are portrayed in the media. The idea was to do a project that somehow combined ideas of computer science and theater, being that I am a Computer Science major that has done a lot of theater here at Ursinus. I ultimately decided to go with this subject because I wondered how I would act if I was tasked with playing a “computer scientist”. The issue was that most of the computer scientist characters that I could think of were either exaggerated on purpose because of the nature of the film/show that they were in or weren’t realistic enough for my tastes. This was why I decided to handle this research project the way that I did; my goal was to analyze computer scientists in fiction and find out how these portrayals may affect the perceptions of real computer scientists and the field of computer science as a whole. I then wanted to make a short play poking fun at these portrayals in a comedic way
How Social Inequalities Impact Health: An Exploratory Study of Pregnant and Postpartum Patients
Maternal mortality is a preventable outcome, yet the United States performs poorly in comparison to other countries in the Global North. Although Pennsylvania is one of the wealthiest states in the US and has a well-developed healthcare system in place, the state does not perform as well in comparison to other high-income states, particularly neighboring New England. Pennsylvania serves as a worthwhile proxy to understand the contextual factors that impact mothers’ and their infants’ health. Current research demonstrates how various social determinants of health, including race, socioeconomic status, and other demographic characteristics, along with health system factors affect maternal health outcomes. Yet relationships linking xenophobia, racism to unequal health outcomes are not well understood. This scoping study seeks to engage researchers, policy analysts, and care providers on the linkages between discrimination and health through 5 in-depth interviews. The combination of secondary document review and interviews seeks to close these research gaps and establish the foundations for a larger honors project. Key findings from the study thus far include rising racial health disparities, substance overdose, and inaccessibility of maternal care in Philadelphia are key drivers of rising maternal mortality rates. Understanding how and why these unacceptably high rates of mortality persist offers answers not only for Pennsylvania, but also for the United States, as to why this country fails to protect marginalized patients from poor birth outcomes
