    Aphids are a major insect pest, damaging crops worldwide. One sustainable and safe method of pest suppression is through biological control, the use of a natural predator to minimize the pest population. This project explores the effects of prey refuge and increased parasitoid longevity on the parasitoid-host interactions of the parasitoid wasp, Aphidius ervi, and the pea aphid host, Acyrthosiphon pisum. We collect data through laboratory experimentation with different levels of prey refuge and parasitoid longevity. We use a stage-structured system of ordinary differential equations to mathematically model this relationship and explore simulated long-term population dynamics. Generalized linear models will be utilized to statistically evaluate the model fit. We conclude by exploring the consequences and applications of our preliminary results

Factors such as inflation, unemployment, market volatility, FED policy, and market growth are scrutinized for their impact on altering the correlation pattern. Additionally, the research explores the implications of the stock-bond correlation on portfolio diversification. By explaining the multifaceted nature of the correlation, this study provides valuable insights for investors, policymakers, and financial analysts, aiding them in navigating the complexities of financial markets and shedding light on what causes movements in the correlation of stock and bond returns. Through empirical analysis, it was discovered that inflation, unemployment, and changes in the effective federal funds rate were the most significant driving factors of changes in the stock-bond correlation

    Isolation of Aged Mouse Primary Microglia as a Model System for Alzheimer’s Disease Research

    Microglia and their role as the immune cells of the central nervous system are an emerging area of interest within Alzheimer’s research, particularly as they have shown in a benevolent and malevolent cellular context. Models of Alzheimer’s disease are very light in studying microglia, so in this study a model of microglia isolated from aged mice is established in order to study the phagocytic activity and protein expression of microglia in response to Amyloid Beta. The cells were isolated from aged mice and cultured before being used to confirm cellular identity, as well as to measure phagocytic activity. This study has successfully established this model for further study into the role of microglia within AD as well as other diseases

    On August 23, 2024, first-year Ursinus College students participated in a common CIE event in Myrin Library. Teams of students, assigned to a particular section of Library stacks, searched for book titles that could be combined in meaningful ways. These combinations were then written and transferred to the end of each stack.
