Differences between Filipino and Filipino-American’s written outputs: a contrastive rhetoric of professional discourse

    No full text
The study examined the emails of a Filipino and a Filipino-American personnel sent to the company’s email bank in order to see differences in hyper codification and contextual differences of the text structures. These sample emails were then presented to other Filipino personnel of the company in order to identify their subjective impressions, in terms of effectiveness, appropriateness, and clarity. The result indicated that the Filipino personnel’s emails, which contain the mission/vision of the company, contain more vivacity, dynamism, life, and contextual features. Yet, though these may be taken as wordy or circular by native speakers, other Filipino personnel find the emails and the mission/vision more distinct, more understandable and more direct to the point as compared to the emails and the mission/vision of the Filipino-American personnel

ESL learners’ reading approaches of an academic expository text

    No full text
The primary purpose of the present study is to explore the reading approaches of ESL learners reading an academic expository text. Through phenomenography, this study aims to identify the variations or different ways in which six ESL learners read an academic expository text. The ability to read effectively is a prominent skill required in any academic or higher learning contexts. However, many first year students, specifically second language learners, who enter institutions of higher learning, are found to be unprepared for the reading demands placed upon them. The sample of this study involved six second-year Bachelor of Arts students, majoring in English Language Studies (ELS) at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). Three instruments were used in the collection of data: reading text, in depth interviews and observations. Findings revealed variations that represented the deep and surface approaches of reading an academic expository text. Although changes were recorded with each reading, further research could enhance the representation of students‟ approaches to reading if analyzed at individual level

Discourse analysis of decision making episodes in meetings: politeness theory and critical discourse analysis

    No full text
Many management activities (e.g. negiotiation, meetings, decision making, presentation and so on) depend on the chair‟s use and control of language. Therefore, the asymmetric relation between interactants in meetings needs to be considered. Participants in meetings have different positions and interests to defend and they used different ways to express and negotiate their points. The chairperson, on the other hand, is entrusted with the responsibility of managing the discussion and most importantly in making decision. This provides the chairperson with control of topics and turns, expressed through the exercise of power in language use. The present study will examine this asymmetric relations using the politeness strategies (Brown and Levinson, 1987) employed by the chairperson and the chair‟s display of power (Fairclough, 1992, Van Djik, 2001, 2006). The unit of analysis in this study is decision making episodes, using the notion of frame (Goffman, 1974), which involves shared understandings of certain conventions and norms that operate and facilitate participants to make appropriate interpretation of each others. The findings revealed that the chair in meeting 1 preferred to use negative politeness strategies, while the chair in meeting 2 tended to use bald- on- record politeness strategies. With regards to display of power, the chair in meeting 1 displayed power subtly by acknowledging the significant contributions made by members of the meeting to the final decision. The chair in meeting 2, however, was more bold and direct

The islamic panacea to global financial predicament:a new financial architecture

The roots of the 2008 global financial crisis that originated in the United States subprime mortgage market are firstly traced to the demand side of financing. Borrower preferences are explained to be based on excessiveness of ownership and spending. Such excessive consumer preferences are matched up with the suppliers’ decision to allow easy lending and accumulation of multiple debt-ridden loans. The cost of such financial excessiveness is shown to be the rate of interest. The relevance of interest rate in efficient financing and economic resource mobilization is questioned here from the theoretical side. Its rejection and replacement by participatory financing instruments in the good things of life is formalized. A new financial architectural design is thus laid out in terms of the central issue of money, finance and real economy complementary relations. These relations can be simulated by circular causation equations. The foundational conceptual premise is governed by the episteme of unity of knowledge. Thus the Islamic worldview of unity of knowledge is invoked to address the theme of 100% Reserve Requirement Monetary System (100%RRMS). Its social and economic implications are formalize
