Examining the relationship between stakeholders focus and company performances: some empirical evidences from Malaysian business firms
This paper investigates the relationship between stakeholder focus capability; an important
internal organisational capability with company performances. Stakeholder theory reflects that
the firms’ performance will depend on how organisations balance the needs of their
stakeholders. Meanwhile, TQM model, while recognising the stakeholders needs, limits the
scope to only few vital groups. Furthermore, TQM model specifies the internal capability to
focus on important stakeholders and therefore we shall use TQM as our research framework.
This study focuses on three important stakeholders; customer, employee, and community
because of their direct relationship with business outcomes. An instrument is developed to
measure the related constructs and is found to be reliable. Using exploratory factor analysis,
we found that the items clearly group into the three factors; customer focus, employee focus,
and community focus. Another factor analysis on the company performance measure results in
a single factor. We proceed with the multiple regression analysis to test the relationship
between the dependent, company performances and the independent factors, the three
dimensions of stakeholder focus capability. The percentage variance explained by the three
factors is 68 percent. Customer, community and employee focus significantly influence the
company performances with beta coefficient of 0.563, 0.465, and 0.424 respectively. The
relationship is moderated by the company size with large companies is observed to have a
higher ability to focus. We conclude that emphasis on these three groups are important thus
developing the capability to focus on them must be given due consideration. Theoretical and
practical implications are discusse
Oncocytic schneiderian papilloma: a rare sinonasal papilloma removed via endoscopic medial maxillectomy
There are three types of papilloma which arises from the Schneiderian membrane
namely inverted, fungiform and oncocytic. Oncocytic papilloma is the rarest type and
occurs predominantly in the older age group. Clinically, its behaviour is similar to
inverted papilloma in having both local recurrence and associated malignancy. We
report a rare case of oncocytic papilloma arising from the maxillary sinus, extending
into the nasal cavity and nasopharynx, in a 78-year-old lady. Despite the longstanding
history there was no evidence of associated malignancy in this lesion. An endoscopic
medial maxillectomy was successfully utilized for approach and complete tumour
excision. In conclusion, oncocytic papilloma should be considered as a differential
diagnosis in patients presenting with unilateral polypoid nasal lesions especially in the
elderly. In addition, endoscopic medial maxillectomy can provide an adequate
approach for complete tumour removal
ESP students’ views of ESL grammar learning
Grammar has always been viewed as playing an essential role in the success or failure of
formal communication. This research will show that grammar education should be
‘descriptive’ rather than ‘prescriptive’ in order to offer students a set of choices to make
them effective speakers and writers. The main objective of this study was twofold. First,
it focused on students’ views about a new grammar model that includes four stages:
confrontation, clarification, confirmation and consolidation (CCCC) and students’
perceptions regarding grammar learning in general. Second, it investigated the recurrent
patterns of interaction during the process of learning grammar within the framework of
the model. The subjects of this study were forty female students from three ESP for
education classes in the UAE University. Three research instruments (a questionnaire,
classroom observation notes and semi-structured interviews) were employed to establish
data triangulation and to attain validity. The results from the collective data demonstrated
that students had positive views about the use of the CCCC grammar model. Another
crucial result highlighted the students’ beliefs about the positive influence of explicit
grammar teaching on learning the conventions of sentences and utterances. Finally, the
study concluded with recommendations to direct future research
Assessing land use land cover changes in Langkawi island: towards sustainable urban living
Simulating future urban growth might be useful in
predicting the future urban fabric and its impact on
the society, space and environment. This approach,
however, needs to be undertaken with care such that it
requires fundamental understanding of past and present
situation. At present, urban area in developing nation is
experiencing rapid urbanization and undergoing physical
transformation, since majority of its population lives in
urban area. It is therefore, essential that urban planners
and managers understand the past and present land use
land cover changes in order to predict its impacts on the
society, economy and environment of the cities. This study
aims to explore and assess land use land cover changes
in Langkawi Island, Malaysia which has experienced
significant increase of population during the last decade
mainly due to the growth in tourism sector. The study
monitored land use land cover changes since 1974 in
order to assess the development of tourism activities and
its impact on physical transformation of the island. Urban
built-up area was controlled and directed towards existing
built-up zone. However, annual urban expansion intensity
index revealed that high speed of land use land cover
transformation also occurred sporadically throughout the
island especially after 1992 which might cause negative
impact to the communit

The collection of 19th century printed Malay books of Emil Lüring
Emil Lüring was a missionary of the Methodist Episcopal Church based in Singapore, Ipoh and Penang, from 1889 to 1909. After his return to Germany he became a lecturer at the Methodist Training Seminary in Frankfurt. During his stay in Malaya, he kept close connections on leading European experts on Malay languages and literature, such as Wilkinson, Shellabear, Blagden and Skeat. He was able to obtaine an impressive collection of early printed Malay books which he either received from the American Mission Press or bought himself from local publishing houses or booksellers in Singapore and Riau. Many of these titles are today extremely rare and are listed her
The notion of Habermas’ ‘public sphere’ and its relevance to interrogations of women’s empowerment and leadership in Muslim contexts
In the light of J. Habermas’ notion of the ‘public sphere’, this paper explores how a western concept of the
‘public sphere’ can be applied to the women empowerment notion of a ‘Muslim context’ (WEMC). The following questions are asked and discussed in this paper: Can Habermas’ concept be confined only to a secular way of life? How is a public space to be transformed into a ‘safe space’ given the WEMC approaches to communication, resource and alliance building? If public space is the outcome of
WEMC/Alliance work with religious/government officials and community leaders, does this create a ‘safe space’ for women? How does communication take place in a controlled ’political space’ and who is in control? The concept of a ‘public sphere’ acquired philosophical and sociological meanings as a notion of the social order in which there is room for societal debate, and accessible to citizens. Does the nature of authority and leadership in China translate meaningfully into the ‘public sphere’? Conclusion: it is still not easy to define a public sphere within a WEMC context since only with the government sanction does the
public space become a safe space. Given the nature of authority and leadership in China, it is difficult to see
whether a ‘public sphere’ can be seen as a space in which we negotiate our differences with one another and mobilize around a common purpose; the issue becomes very complex
Perlaksanaan sistem pengurusan keselamatan dan kesihatan pekerjaan di makmal perubatan : faktor dorongan dan halangan utama
Background : The implementation of Occupational Safety and Health Management System(OSHMS) requires a level of measurement. The effectiveness of OSHMS implementation was influenced by inhibiting and supporting factors. The objective of this study was to determine the inhibiting and supporting factors towards the implementation of OSHMS in medical laboratories.
Methodology : The implementation of Occupational Safety and Health Management System(OSHMS) requires a level of measurement. The effectiveness of OSHMS implementation was influenced by inhibiting and supporting factors. The objective of this study was to determine the inhibiting and supporting factors towards the implementation of OSHMS in medical laboratories.
Result : This study showed the level of compliance to the OSHMS MS1722 guideline among medical laboratories who are MS ISO 15189 accredited & have a higher scores in overall measurement indicators OSHMS compared to those do not have SAMM accreditation. Private medical laboratories services have higher scores in overall measurement indicators OSHMS, compared to government medical laboratories.
However, there was no significant difference (p>0.05) between medical laboratories which have ISO 9000 quality management system certification, compared to level of
compliance to the OSHMS MS 1722 guideline among medical laboratories. Therewas also no significant difference (p>0.05) between the laboratories who had been operating for more than 10 years compared to those with less than 10 years, towards implementing the OSHMS. Results showed that majority of medical laboratories management perceived that difficulty and complexities of OSH legislation are the
most important factor that prevent them from implementing OSHMS in their organization. The most important supporting factor, that medical laboratories management perceived as the most important to comply to the OSHMS were their moral responsibilities towards the community.
Conclusion : In conclusion, the study shows there were many inhibiting and supporting factors that contribute towards effective implementation of OSHMS elements in workplace
Jawahir Al-Bukhari of Tuan Haji Husayn : a significance hadith text in social teaching
This article presents an investigation into the part played by Tuan Husayn in disseminating Hadith teaching in Malay world. It is concerned primarily with the use of specific Hadith text (Jawahir al-Bukhari) as a tool for social
teaching in Malaysia. It is an attempt to provide a briefly work on the subject, particularly the role of this text in terms of his transmission of fundamental Islamic principles to Malay Muslims. In the interests of validity and reliability, the study provides multiple sources of evidence. These include tape-recorded indepth interviews1 with researchers (in particular with an expert educationalist in twentieth century social, political and religious affairs in Malaysia) and academicians who are biographers of Husayn identified. My approach to the
text builds also on the employments of the interpretation approach used in the understanding of text. Thus, research methods used to examine the original writings of Husayn are largely ‘qualitative2, and consist of approaches such as
‘hermeneutics’ and the ‘inferential’ technique of content analysis. This article identifies that in social and religious discourse in Malaysia the use of Hadith
texts serves social and political as well as religious practical teaching. It also identifies that the development of the Hadith in Malaysia and its significance for Malay Muslims was signified by several issues raised by Malay religious scholars. This includes the consciousness and critique of Malay Muslims on the misconduct in their lives. Among the purposes of the translation and commentary
of Arabic texts are the definitions of an ideal Islamic society and to preserve the Hadith of the Prophet s.a.w to the Malay community. Such discourse is an example of an increasingly common genre of Malay Islamic literature that
emphasizes the ‘unity’ and ‘brotherhood’ of the Muslim community
A Malaysian National Prerogative: engaging West Asia for long-term energy dealsand co-operation
An enhanced Malaysia-West Asia (Middle-east) relationship is vital especially in ensuring steady import stream of energy resources in coming decades to Malaysia in light of Malaysia becoming a net oil importer after 2015. Malaysia has been identifying options to diversify its energy resources so that it would not be too dependent on the depleting gas resources and imports of coal in its energy mix. As Middle-east has strong influence in determining future development in world petroleum industry, Malaysia should position itself to leverage on traditional relationship to benefit from long-term energy deals (eg. liquefied natural gas (LNG) for post-2020 scenario). To reciprocate, Malaysia could participate in more energy
infrastructure projects to leverage on the success of RM9bn Shuaybah power and water desalination privatization project in Saudi Arabia. Malaysia could also offer technical services training and industrial attachment opportunities in electricity (Institut Latihan Sultan Ahmad Shah (ILSAS), TNB) and petroleum (Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP)) to West Asian energy industry
