Critical junctures: anarchistic leanings of current urbanization in Malaysia
Development in Malaysia has reached a critical juncture
where the expectations of end results and processes have
drastically changed from the first time the New Economic
Policy (NEP) outlined the future for the country. The
focus on technocratic solutions to social problems, while
still dominant, is increasingly being contested and
supplemented by negotiated meanings of multiple symbols
and evolving objectives, proposed at various entry points.
Global market forces have changed the effectiveness of
earlier centralized planning efforts and have opened up
local development avenues that are not as dependent on the
State as they were before. This has led to an increasingly
anarchistic approach of direct development, a pattern that
has caught many development planners by surprise. The
urbanization phenomenon today is increasingly driven by
individuals that take up risks and responding faster to the
uncertain conditions of the market than the established
bureacracy of development planning. These new agents of
development are aware but no longer simply following the
path set by the State, negotiating to capitalise on State-led
programmes but with independent agendas. The current
result is the creation of a syncretic rural-urban society
with blurred physical and social boundaries. Using the
everyday content of urbanization, the paper attempts to
provide some insights into this dynamics of development
that has permeated the rural-urban landscape of Malaysia.
The Bernam-Linggi region which has experienced the
changing whims of development and development planning
is used as an example to illustrate the emergence of the
urban through a coalescing of local drivers responding
to the State and Market. The argument of the paper is
articulated within a rhizomatic approach to the current
urbanization phenomenon, emphasizing the bottom-up,
lateral proliferation of individually determined views of
development which resulted in the current urban-rural
landscape of the the Bernam Linggi region in particular,
and Malaysia in general. The paper also posits several
implications for planning analysis and development

The potentials, threats and challenges in sustainable development of Penang National Park
The Penang National Park (PNP) is recognized as an initiative of sustainable development of the Penang
State Government. Since the gazettement of the young Penang National Park about 8 years ago, much
have yet to be done to fully realize its potentials. These include growing into a world class ecotourism
site in tandem with the UNESCO heritage status of Georgetown, to develop into a world class research
center, to create sustainable income as a socio-economic contributor to local communities, and to
showcase the success of a national park within a highly urbanized island. However, there are threats to
PNP such as development pressures due to land scarcity, encroachment of urban and agricultural land
use into the park, illegal developments, and apathetic attitude amongst local visitors which have created
many environmental issues, problematic solid waste pollution, and infrastructure construction in the
park. All these threats need to be addressed in order to ensure sustainable development of the PNP. The
challenges include having political will, creating an effective awareness and environmental education
system for all stakeholders, develop a sustainable management plan, environmentally-friendly
infrastructure, and focusing on ecotourism rather than mass tourism in the PN
Konsepsualisasi ruang dan habitat tradisional Melayu
The conceptualization of space and habitat in any culture is based on beliefs that are articulated through various mediums. Modern cultures present theirs in the form of plans and maps that often emphasize the efficiency of land tenure subdivisions, private and public space as well as socio-economic investment potentials. Traditional cultures on the other hand present their ideas on space and habitat through oral traditions as well as the written. Some present their concepts through songs, stories and picturesque motifs along with the other common mediums. This article presents the cultural basis of traditional Malay space and habitat presented originally through oral traditions, via myths and cosmologies. Ideas of place making and habitat building are more than just physical, they are very much social in natur
Labour composition for maintenance works in Public Hospital built environment in South-West, Nigeria
The study examined the labour composition for maintenance works in the public hospital buildings in South-West, Nigeria, and in the process identified if there are any significant differences in the execution of maintenance works using outsourcing and in-house labour. In achieving the objective, the study adopted research survey technique with a total of 552 questionnaires comprising 206 for maintenance staff and 346 for users of public hospital collected and used for the study. The survey covered 46 public hospitals representing 40% of the total number of public hospitals existing in South-West, Nigeria. It comprises all the 11 federal owned hospitals and 35 selected states owned based on stratified random sampling technique. Data collected were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics.
The findings of the study revealed that there is no variation in the work performed by the use of in-source and outsourced labour. However, maintenance staff rated the use of in-source better than outsource in that it is found to produce higher quality and better quality control of services, reduction in cost while outsourced gives an understanding of latest technologies with better access to special skills.
Based on the above findings, the study recommends that maintenance staff should be well motivated. For optimum results, maintenance departments need to adopt sound policies, as this will provide appropriate basis for preparing budgets that will meet the actual maintenance needs of the hospital buildings and services. Maintenance managers are to do their best to prepare realistic need-based budgets while the government should make efforts to improve funding for hospital maintenance. Inefficiencies and inflexibility through the imposition of bureaucratic impediments to operational effectiveness should be avoided in hospital environment due to the sensitivity of the services being rendered. Maintenance staff and users of hospital buildings should be given opportunities for further training on their jobs also on effective use of hospital facilities
Kaedah peperiksaan bagi murid-murid berkeperluan khas masalah pembelajaran (BKBP)
This research introduces an alternative method of assessing candidates with learning disabilities without modifying or
impacting the quality of the questions. This alternative assessment involves changing the question presentation from a written form to a voice form using computer technology. The sample consists of 163 students from all over Malaysia who have just sat for their Peperiksaan Menengah Rendah (PMR). In this research, three methods of assessment were
studied: 1. Regular Method This is the traditional method as being used now. 2. E-Suara I (EsI) is a model where sample read and listen to the questions on the computer and answer by writing in the OMR paper. E-Suara II (EsII) requires sample to read and listen to the questions on the computer and answer questions on the computer. Findings showed that the level of students’achievement as such: Regular Method mean 5.83, EsI mean 8.13 and EsII min 8.35. The findings show that the EsII method enables students with learning disabilities to answer exam questions better than the Regular Method. Through the EsII Method, the ability of students with learning disabilities can be assessed correctly
The uprising of the fedayeen against the government of Jordan, 1970-1971: declassified documents from The British Archive
The defeated of the Arabs in the 1967’s war to the Israeli had created instability and political discord in the Palestinian neighbour countries, particularly the Kingdom of Jordan in 1970s. During the war, a huge number of the new Palestinian refugees or displaced people (DPs) were
influxes into the country. The Palestinian refugees who scattered in the refugee camps around Jordan soil than formed a radical militia movement of the fedayeen to fight against the Israeli occupation. As a consequence, Israel retaliation placed Amman in continuous instability and
danger. After the war, King Hussein was also lost his popularity among Palestinians, Jordan citizens and the Jordanian army. With a support from the Palestinian refugees, who formed the majority population in many Jordan towns, as well as the Jordanian sympathizers, the fedayeen
movement gains their popularity and eventually emerged as a serious political threat to the King rulership. This paper will analyse the conflict from a historical perspective and methodology, based on archival documents sources found at the National Archive of England in London
Kemandirian industri eko-pelancongan: Kes tarikan pelancong kelip-kelip Kg. Kuantan
Kuantan
Pathways to reflective learning and teacher development: insights from teacher trainees’ diaries
Teacher trainees going out to schools for their teaching practicum are often required to keep reflective diaries to
help provide them with valuable insights into their own thoughts, beliefs and practices. Reflective writing is a
form of authentic communication, more superior to talk as it helps shape our thinking. This process of shaping
experiences are more explicit because writing requires great deliberation and word choice leading to more
explicitness in expression. Call it ‘a humbling process’ or a ‘mirror of the mind’; learning diaries enable learners
to take the private and individual learning journey towards self-development and self-realization. This study
investigated the professional development of two teacher trainees who underwent a three-month long teaching
practicum in Malaysian public schools. Data collected from the diaries were triangulated with open-ended interviews. The findings revealed that both students felt that their teaching practicum was a meaningful learning experience. Further probing indicated that through over critical reflection, one progressed from awareness of theoretical concepts to involvement and implementation, while the other was able to move onto higher levels of creation and transcendence where she could one day become a teacher to others. More importantly this reflective journey helped teacher trainees chart their beliefs and perceptions on the teaching and learning process and what future pathways they wanted to take
Stopping doctor-patient communication gap: The ten essential methods
Background : An effective doctor-patient communication has increasingly being recognized as an important factor in patient care. All means should be oriented towards
narrowing communication gap. The essential methods must be searched and doctor must be able to conduct communication session in more pleasing manner.
Methodology: This is a systematic review on observations made on doctor-patient relationship on various setting and supported by feedbacks from many scholars who are involved
in research, teaching and also papers and studies on the said subject.
Results: It is been realized that effective communication is not easily done if its process not well complemented and the gap is left widening. From all possible communication
gaps recognized and listed, at least ten have identified to be the most essential methods to be prioritized while counselling or consulting a patient.
Conclusion: Effective communication between patient and doctor is the essential prerequisite of
good medical practice and especially important for accurate diagnosis and effective treatment. Its mutual benefit can only be observed if all efforts are centered towards managing the communication gap
Ambiguity in human communication: causes, consequences and resolution
Effective communication is not just about the transmission of ideas/messages from the sender to the receiver. Rather, it is about the dissemination of properly worded meaningful ideas/messages that are comprehensible to both parties and which ultimately can attract the desired response or feedback. Semantic clarity therefore, is very essential to the effectiveness of communication which facilitates the attainment of target goals. Ambiguity however, has a way of intruding into communication and subjecting ideas/messages to double or multiple semantic interpretations thereby resulting in semantic complexity and sometimes leading to semantic confusion. Proper disambiguation however, remains the only antidote to the semantic problem of ambiguous communication. This paper therefore, highlights causes of ambiguity in human communication. It analyses its possible consequences. Finally, it explicates appropriate ambiguity resolution techniques as linguistic panacea
