Quality of life amongst post coronary artery bypass patients at the National Heart Institute, Malaysia
No full textCoronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) surgery has increased the survival rate for
individuals suffering from myocardial infarction or coronary ischemia. The present
study aimed to examine the perception of quality of life amongst post CABG patients at
the National Heart Institute Malaysia. A total of 69 post CABG patients, were studied
using the Medical Outcomes Short Form 36 (SF-36). The findings showed that post
CABG respondents possessed good level of quality of life (SF-36) physically and
mentally. There were significant differences between the role physical in the physical
functioning domains of quality of life with gender (t=0.286, p<0.05). Duration of physi-cal exercises of more than 20 minutes have positive effects on both physical (t=2.738,
p<0.05) and mental components (t=7.326, p<0.05). The level of income influenced
both the physical component (F=3.100, p<0.05), and mental component (F=4.272,
p<0.05). Post CABG patients were found to have high quality of life post operatively.
They were able to make comprehensive lifestyle changes through frequent physical
exercises to accommodate their need
Concomitant t(8;21) and trisomy 4 in a patient with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML)
No full textThe t(8;21)(q22;q22) is a frequently occurring aberration in acute myeloid leukemia
(AML) (18-20%) and usually correlate with French-America-British (FAB) M2 subtype.
Several studies showed that patients carrying this abnormality demonstrated good
response to standard chemotherapy but also have a high incidence of disease relapse.
Trisomy 4 is a rare and specific chromosomal abnormality occurring in AML M2 or M4
of the FAB subtypes. We report a case of a 33-year-old female with an apparently
clinical and hematologic diagnosis of acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) in whom
cytogenetic analysis revealed an abnormal karyotype with trisomy 4, in addition to
t(8;21). Trisomy 4 and t(8;21) in a patient with AML is rare. The significance of t(8;21)
with trisomy 4 in AML are unclear but patients bearing this abnormality are associated
with a poor prognosis
Thymoma: a case report and review of the literature
No full textThymomas comprise about 1% of all mediastinal tumours and are rare in children.
Typically, these tumours are aggressive, with a poor outcome. The current treatment of
invasive thymoma is often multidisciplinary. We report a 16-year-old boy with invasive
thymoma who was successfully treated with systemic chemotherapy, surgical
resection and irradiation. The patient has been in continuous remission for 6 years
without radiographic evidence of tumour recurrence
The utilisation of test-taking strategies among female students in a tertiary institution
No full textThis article reports a study on test-taking strategies utilized by low and high proficiency
female participants in an open-ended reading comprehension test. Based on purposive
sampling, 10 students were selected from one tertiary institution. The study seeks to
explore the test-taking strategies employed by female students of two levels of
proficiency. Verbal reports from these participants were obtained via the retrospective
protocol and playback sessions. The data provided information on participants’ thinking
process and revealed how they arrived at their answers and the reasons for their choice of
answers. The data were transcribed verbatim and analyzed qualitatively whereby patterns
of strategies were identified and categorized. On the whole the results showed both levels
employed almost the same total number of strategies, 24 and 22 for the high and low
proficiency participants respectively. The conclusions were drawn upon the results of the
data provided by limited number of participants and thus thrust aside the claim of
representativeness in terms of test-taking strategy studies. However, the study allows a
peek on the types of test-taking strategies utilized by students in the study which may
also be employed by students in general
