Attribution tendency and its relationship with actual and perceived proficiency.

    No full text
Attribution theory suggests that people attribute different causes for those areas in their lives where they perceive themselves as having succeeded or failed. These perceived causes may be classified into three causal dimensions: locus of control, stability, and controllability. Using attribution theory, this study examines Malaysian university students’ attributions for success and failure in learning English as a second language. The study attempts to investigate their perceived reasons for successes and failures on actual language learning tasks, and explores whether their attribution tendencies vary depending on their actual and perceived proficiency. Based on attribution theory, two versions of a questionnaire (one for success and one for failure) were administered to 2152 students at six different universities in Malaysia. Students were required to pick an activity at which they had scored particularly poorly in the previous semester. In the second part of the questionnaire, the students were asked to rate the twelve causes for success or failure on a six point Likert scale. The findings showed that high proficiency learners and those who perceived themselves as high proficiency learners attributed success to their own effort and ability more than mid and low proficiency learners. On the other hand, when it comes to failure experiences, high proficiency learners and those who regarded themselves as having high proficiency showed a stronger tendency to ascribe their unsuccessfu

Assessment of surface water quality in the Malaysian Coastal Waters by using multivariate analyses

Coastal water samples were collected from 20 sampling sites in the southern part of Peninsular Malaysia. Seven physico-chemical parameters were measured directly in-situ while water samples were collected and analysed for 6 dissolved trace metal concentrations. The surface water (0-20 cm) physico-chemical parameters including temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen (DO), pH, total dissolved solids (TDS), specific conductance (SpC) and turbidity while the dissolved trace metals were Cd, Cu, Fe, Ni, Pb and Zn. The ranges for the physico-chemical parameters were 28.07-35.6ºC for temperature, 0.18-32.42 ppt for salinity, 2.20-12.03 mg/L for DO, 5.50-8.53 for pH, 0.24-31.65 mg/L for TDS, 368-49452 μS/cm for SpC and 0-262 NTU for turbidity while the dissolved metals (mg/L) were 0.013-0.147 for Cd, 0.024-0.143 for Cu, 0.266-2.873 for Fe, 0.027-0.651 for Ni, 0.018-0.377 for Pb and 0.032-0.099 for Zn. Based on multivariate analysis (including correlation, cluster and principal component analyses), the polluted sites were found at Kg. Pasir Puteh and Tg. Kupang while Ni and Pb were identified as two major dissolved metals of high variation in the coastal waters. Therefore, water quality monitoring and control of release of untreated anthropogenic wastes into rivers and coastal waters are strongly needed

Gill and digestive caecum of telescopium telescopium as biomonitors of Pb bioavailability and contamination by Pb in the tropical intertidal area

In this paper we investigated the concentrations of Pb in seven different soft tissues (foot, cephalic tentacles, mantle, muscle, gill, digestive caecum and remaining soft tissues) of 17 geographical populations of Telescopium telescopium collected from the intertidal area of Peninsular Malaysia. Two points can be presented based on the present study. First, as expected, different concentrations of Pb were found in the different soft tissues, indicating different mechanisms of bioaccumulation and regulations of Pb in these different tissues. By comparing the Pb concentrations in the similar tissues, spatial variation of Pb was found in the different sampling sites although there is no consistent pattern of Pb contamination in these sampling sites. Second, based on the correlation coefficients and multiple linear stepwise regression analysis between Pb concentrations in the different soft tissues and Pb concentrations in geochemical factions in the surface sediments, it is found that gill and digestive caecum can truly reflect Pb contamination and Pb bioavailabilities in the tropical intertidal mudflats. To our knowledge, this is the most comprehensive study on Pb in the different soft tissues of T. telescopium, in relation to the habitat sediments of the snails

Blastocystis hominis: its presence in the faecal samples of Orang Asli Children at Pos Lenjang, Pahang, Malaysia (Blastocystis hominis: kehadirannya di dalam sampel feses Kanak-Kanak Orang Asli di Pos Lenjang, Pahang, Malaysia)
